Marisha on a prior Talks Machina episode: "I'm the only one who hasn't died yet. But I'd be okay with breaking that streak as long as my death wasn't stupid."
Pike
died fighting with her friends inspiring her to take a Time on her own
Vex
died because of her greed and causing her brother to serve the raven queen
Grog
died because he was blind and thought his strength was more important then basic needs
Percy
died Trying to get Revenge having his friends do it for him
Vax
died Trying to help the love of his life in her last trail
Tary
died in his first proper adventure learning how dangerous it can be and staying the path anyway
Dotty
died trying to protect his master his creator his friend
Keylth
Killed her self Jumping off a cliff
Scanlan - died fighting the conclave to save all of humanity
And then she was too stupid to understand how stupid her death was.
Marisha on a prior Talks Machina episode: "Matt told me that 9th level spells are basically only used by gods. That's an amazing amount of power to have."
@@SPACEHARICE tary never died, but he almost did
I think Marisha failed to grasp the gravity of the situation.

Yeah, she certainly fell for it.

"Goldfish are not magnetically attracted to water. They just fall." THANK YOU SAM
Underrated comment on Tal's part: "Those are ironfish."
And then she vetoes the flying fish suggestion with a smug "I don't think flying fish *actually* fly...", as if she had thought about it and settled on goldfish as the best option 🤣🤣🤣
@@SmirkyWaters I mean, she’s right, they don’t. At that height it wouldn’t have made a difference. They’re only equipped to glide short distances close to the surface of the water. And y’all, can we stop calling Marisha a moron? Jesus Christ. She’s far from it.
@@annafantasia Per Matt's description, after using her Gust of Wind cantrip (which Matt has numerous times described to her as a "gentle fart", yet she insists on using it to move stuff), she had a 50/50 chance to hit rock or water (he rolled percentage dice to determine which), so another small push---or glide, in the case of the flying fish, would have been enough. Not saying it was a great option, but it would have been better than goldfish. I would have opted for a cormorant personally, for both the flying and diving capabilities, but if you listen to Matt through the crosstalk, looks like he was going to let her get away without damage if she hit the water in fish form. Many DM's wouldn't be that generous since hitting the surface of the water near terminal velocity after a 1000+ ft fall is like hitting a wall at 100+ mph. My point is not that Marisha is a moron, it's that after a 4-year campaign and as a 17th level druid, she still doesn't properly read her spell descriptions or even think in terms of basic D&D rules (it's not the first time they've suffered damage from falls). She behaves like this is an improv' session instead of a game with a detailed set of rules, and then she gets mad at Matt or takes it personally when he simply applies them (often generously in her case).
@@SmirkyWaters yes
Keyleth's a moron
Plus, technically speaking it caps out at 20d6, because terminal velocity, physics vs. D&d debate again, which would have been only enough to knock her to 6 hp

I really can't believe that I only just now realized that Taryon and his parents Maryia and Howaardt are inspired by Tony Stark and his parents Maria and Howard. Taryon is a rich, spoiled, self absorbed inventor who literally built himself a metal man and he has tenuous relationship with his father. Gotta love Sam Riegel.

Years old, but Liam's comment is so underrated. "It's like a magic trick. A fish turned into a corpse."

I LITERALLY READ THIS COMMENT RIGHT AS I HEARD IT ON THE EPISODE.
@Zombiewithabowtie ahhhhh the dbza reference
For the last several years, my girlfriend (a big Critter) has owned and worn a sleeveless green t-shirt. On this shirt, is a goldfish with antlers, in mid-flight. Small text on the bottom reads, "It's fine. We're gods."
She always used to tell me, "try to forget about it for now." Last night, as I was watching this, and almost did a spit take, she just casually laid the shirt out for me to look at. Brilliant.
You know... if Grog made the cliff jump while raging, not only would he survive, he wouldn’t even lose consciousness

Pretty sure they were just friends back then. I remember some Talks Machina discussion where Matt mentioned that they started out as friends, and their relationship grew to become a romance in the background after they started spending more time together after the Chroma Conclave attacked Emon.
@@SynchronizorVideoscynically speaking: as the show's popularity grew, the DM/ CR team made a decision to diversify the story and character pool in order to appeal to more people as well as shelter themselves from accusations of telling stories about straight people, told by actors of the same ethnic background etc.

@@u.s.s.chucklefucker1657 Technically, fall damage caps at 20d6 so she wouldn't have died anyway.
@@stevenclark5173
Technically, this rule is not on par with mechanics of the 5e and she would have died anyway, probably too damaged. And Vex would never remember of the coin by herself, and so on...
"The 20d6 maximum damage from falling has been around since at least 2nd edition D&D, and is repeated in 5th edition D&D. This is an average of 70 points of damage. It has a realistic range of about 55 to 85 (you can verify this on anydice.com).
The problem is that the damage from falling does not scale between the editions, as 5th edition characters have much more hit points and can survive to much lower negative hit point amounts.
The 200 foot fall that would normally outright kill a 2nd edition PC with 60 hit points, as they could only survive to -9 hit point, will only knock out a 5th edition character with the same amount of hit points. It would require 120 points of damage to be rolled to kill the 5th edition character, a 6 on each die, which is virtually impossible.
Besides the issue with negative hit points, 2nd edition PCs generally have less hit points than their 5th edition counterparts at the same level. They receive less hit point bonuses from the same Constitution score; rogues, clerics, and wizards use smaller ranger for hit dice; and hit points increase only a small token amount after level 9.
Your average level 10 wizard in 2nd edition would have 25 to 30 hit points. A 70 foot fall would kill them outright. A level 10 wizard in 5th edition however will probably have a little more than 50 hit points. They would be able to stand up, brush the dust off their clothes, and walk away from that same fall.
A 5th edition character only needs about 45 hit points to reliably survive maximum fall damage (less than 1% chance the DM will roll above 90). That is achievable to most warriors by around level 5 if they have 14 Constitution or more (which is about normal). A 2nd edition character would need 100 hit points to boast the same, which your average warrior - if they had a nice Constitution - could do around level 18. Clerics, rogues, and wizard would never get near this.
The relative threat of falling is just so much less now.
[To fix this] I have two suggestions.
Increase damage dice from falling to a d8 per 10' fallen.
No damage cap for falling damage. Each 10' fallen is d8 blunt damage.
These rules don't completely negate how easily character survive high falls, a character with 100 hit points would have a 50% chance of surviving a 450' drop (...)

Talesins delivery of “Oh Sweet Pelor” was amazing
I really liked that moment, especially considering Percy doesn't even worship any gods, let alone Pelor. I feel like it's a lot like atheists saying "oh my God" or "sweet baby Jesus" or sth like that. Not because they believe in God _or_ Jesus but just because so many people say it that you just learn it as a phrase of exclamation. And considering Pelor is pretty much the patron God of Whitestone there were probably plenty of people around Percy growing up, who said "Oh sweet Pelor" or sth similar.

For a human, yes, you're dead either way probably. For a spider, yes, you're fine either way definitely (ignoring drowning). For a goldfish I'm not really sure if its terminal velocity is high enough that falling in water hurts.
@@jordivermeulen2519 You made me google “what is the terminal velocity of a goldfish”, so thats now in my browser history. Well done!
It lead me to a tweet actually discussing Keyleths goldfish moment and while it wouldn’t fall super fast, it would still probably “splatt”. Question is, should the dice to calculate fall damage be reduced? The amount of force you hit the ground with is considerably less as a goldfish than as a human (or half-elf), regardless of hitting rocks or water.

I don’t know about anyone else, but Matt suddenly saying “Actually, that’s not true.” when Sam jokingly described Doty brushing Taryon’s teeth was the scariest thing ever. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him veto something that directly.
I mean, pretty sure sam and matt already talked about this moment. XD
@@zackrose6261 I expect Matt didn't tell Sam exactly what was going to happen, but probably just gave him a note to not get too involved in the morning conversation and just go with it. I know the show isn't scripted, but occasionally the only thing that makes sense would be for Matt to give very brief direction, for example when they have a guest coming to be open to odd NPC interactions they may otherwise pass on.
It's guided by out of game conversations, not scripted. He tweeted me saying many in game moments are influenced by out of game mini conversations.
And that's really the important difference. Though I do believe they didn't do that with Tova and look how that turned out. D&D is often as random as that Keyleth goof, cut to Matt referring to it as one of the purest D&D moments, but a little forward thinking is sometimes required.
Nah, there was that time he just straight up said "no, you're wrong" to Orion when he was trying to put some leather armor on Tiberius. Matt pulled out a book, looked for the page, clapped it shut and just said "Sorcerer's can wear NO armor. You are wrong." and it was the bluntest thing I think I've ever seen him say lol
Man that beginning was the funniest thing for me this episode. Don't get me wrong it was really dumb, but I wasn't the slightest angry or irritated, it was just really hilarious.
I feel the same way. But... don't expect everyone here to share that sentiment. You know how most people will act.
I think, we've been in a couple chats togwther now and we agree for the most part.
Pretty much. I was actually in shock for a while, but then I got over that shock and truly appreciated the moment for how hilarious it was.
Also, SPOILERS!
Before anyone asks if Kiki is "mentally damaged" or whatnot after the fact, she's fine. She's just rattled and trying to cope.
I just face palmed so hard...
Yep, same as well
The disparity in Liam's reaction of crazy-anxiety over wtf he is going to do when his character finds out his lover is dead due to essentially suicide, and Travis's reaction of laughing his ass off more than I have ever seen: pure gold! I had to pause the episode when Matt said she took over 300 damage, it took me a bit to take it all in. What an adrenaline-fill opening, my god.
I love how Taryons dad is subtly shown to be supreeeemly bad with money... he spent 5000 gold to get his son before even just asking him to come home?
Lol
I know it's overshadowed by the hilarity at the beginning of this episode, but can we talk about how that drow must have felt? One second you're riding along on horseback on a road through a beautiful field, the next the horse is somersaulting forward, dead, two black blurs are streaking towards you, one fires an arrow that _encases you in vines_ and the other - who has _wings_ - throws a dagger and teleports _through the dagger_ to stab you. Like...what a fuckin' day.
Well she was already moving to evade so she wasn't completely unaware however that reversal of fortune was definitely cause for some emotional whiplash.
Also, given how Drow society is usually described, I suspect she has at the very least seen worse shit happen to others.
I have to wonder how much she actually knew about VM before taking the job. That first round really demonstrated she was way out of her depth on this one.
@@hahmann geeze, that’s true. Using all her (no doubt many) skills and having pulled off a clean break, or so you thought, and then hundreds of miles away these scary motherfuckers are just hanging out in the middle of the road waiting for you

putting the circumstances of the fall aside, let's take a moment to realize the likelihood of Terry randomly deciding to produce a revivify and Vex just happening to be the person who had it. hahaha now that's good luck!
And even more then that, the chat creating a BAKER character, before we knew they had opened a bakery, who just happens to show up at the exact time that the cast was looking for an employee to run their bakery.
This entire episode is just insanely specific timing.
It's these against all odds moments that I love about D&D.
but we missed the wonderfully awkward scene of them resurrecting a pile of Keyleth at one of the temples, with Vax trying to figure a way to cradle her
what would have been truly ridiculous is if they didn't have that and she died permanently because she was dashed across the rock before they could get to her. The first permanent Death because Keyleth did the most Keyleth thing ever and jumped 1000 feet to her death in the middle of no danger.
Ethan Hyatt technically the first permadeath was Tiberius.
I imagine this is a detailed example of what the hiring process is for Critical Role. You’re treated well, asked a hundred disjointed questions, someone runs a background check on you, and, at some point, Liam Obrian sneaks into your house to make sure you’re not an assassin. Classic job search stuff.
Goldfish incident:
was it stupid? Yes.

was it hilarious to the point of legendary status? Yes.
is it an excuse to hate on Marisha or Matt? No. (there is no excuse for that)
did the party suffer any lasting damage or let it slow them down in any way? No.
But it was dumb beyond belief.
I couldnt wait to see her first death cause she was the only one who hasnt died yet and was interested in how this will play into the story and then she just splashes herself against rocks . . .
I am not angry just . . . Disappointed.
Gods help the Air Ashari cause they will fucking need it.
@@mordredvonumbra154 Man way to be a fucking downer
I think a lot of people misses the part where she was really having just fun, there were no high stakes in play, so, she assumed there was no risk, she was just trying to make it fun for everyone and misread the situation, and even then, she was surprised with what happened, but she was not sore against Matt or anything, just trying to understand what had happened.
I honestly don't get the hate, it is something that I would hold over my friend for a very long time, of course, but in a jokingly manner.
Ever heard of the so-called "suspension of disbelief", mate?
Marisha as a player declaring they are practically gods (hence she can do it, no matter how idiotic) break the suspension of disbelief.
It thins out the weight and meaning of each PC "death" when she acts in a way that clearly suggests that no meaningful consequences will come from it. It feels like there are no stakes in the game, like playing blackjack with casino's money.
That in my opinion was far more metagaming than anything Orion ever did and it was so because it was using the external knowledge (catalysed by her arrogance and ignorance and lack of paying attention) that there will be no consequences to her acrions no matter what they are.
What made it worse was her reaction to the situation and consequences.
They should really implement some penalties for dying, not temporary ones like feeling ill and having ability checks with a negative modificator or disadvantage but something like "losing top 2 tiers of spells for 3 sessions or abilities etc"
@@oleyullah that's not what suspension of disbelief means lmao

@@kingcurry5139 for example look at Grog he has something like 16 wisdom. That should say a lot.
Her intelligence and wisdom should be switched
@@kingcurry5139 her intelligence is also 15 which is above average

"It's a scatter of red mess." - DM husband describing whatever remains of his wife's character's decimated corpse due to instant death.
I love this whole scene.
Peace.
P.S.
Travis' laugh is highly enjoyable.
Love how Hilda goes:
"My husband is a sailor. I'm a houswife for my children when he's away."
They check out her house.
①It's literally just a stool in the room
②She's alone
③Whitestone is landlocked, her husband being a sailor makes no sense
VM''s conclusion: "Everything seems to be in order"💯
Yup, and I remember that Uncle Ogden's curse story changed slightly every time he told it. I figure they would've learned to keep an eye on the details after Raishan bamboozled them.
Emily Axford will appear in every DM's setting
Whitestone isn’t strictly landlocked, but yes. Doesn’t it have choppy waterways that lead to the cliff that keylith jumped off of at the start of the episode?
@@JemstoneGames Yes but there's no nearby port. That's why all trade is done overland to a distant seaside town and why earlier in the campaign the Briarwoods were planning on building a better bridge.
Look, I love all these guys dearly, but it's clear that Matt is the smart friend lol.

Kudos to Keyleth for surviving 2 years pre-stream and 96 streamed episodes as the only player to not die only to perish in the most ridiculously stupid way possible. I don’t dislike Keyleth as a character- she’s had some pretty funny and cool moments lately, but how could I not laugh at that?! Amazing!
B/c she puts all of her teammates in danger w/her magic and poor decisions while she hangs out in some corner somewhere, that's how she survived.
Ahhh build a bridge and get over it........
Negative criticism isnt valid, I understand. It's better to be morally right than factually wrong.
Some of these comments make me sad... insulting a person for how they play the character that they made.... That's not what this community is about and the people making those comments dont deserve to watch if they are gonna be like that...
What would Mercer say :(
@@christianjacobs8989 You are legit just a prick for saying that. Last I checked no one needed a degree to play DnD. DnD is meant to be a fun time with friends, yet here you are insulting Marisha despite knowing little to nothing about her on a personal level all because you disagree with how she plays.
She is forgetful and she has her quirks, but that's no reason to insult her over a _game._ The lack in intelligence falls to you if you're willing to go as far as to insult someone over DnD. You don't have to have brains to play DnD, you just need imagination and friends.
K’ryyn the Kryn. Solid Boblin the Goblin energy and I’m here for it
I watched the stream the chat made them and that was my first though when they chose the name. They had no idea
19:43 Laura and Liam having a meltdown will be one of my favorite highlights of this episode.
23:52 "Oh sweet Pelor!!" Poetry, master Jaffe. Poetry.
Keyleth's base jump gets even funnier when you realize she has the highest Wisdom score of any player character this far.
I have so many mixed feelings about Keyleth. She has a lot of funny moments, but she also gets a bit infuriating at times. I like the character, but if I met her I’m really life, I would probably have to seriously resist the urge to tear my hair out in frustration.
@@TotallyNotLoki I think the problem is she doesn't play high wisdom or intelligence well. So it creates a disconnect between what her character should be capable of vs how she plays her. If she was a Barbarian with average to low Int/Wis, like Grog/Scanlan, this disconnect wouldn't exist for many people.
@@piranhaplantX she played high intelligence pretty well with Beau imo although Beau was also meant to be high wisdom
Kyleth does. Marisha doesnt
@@TotallyNotLoki This is basically every DND character ever, aside from maybe Vaxildan
