My first two attempts at Keto failed as I felt so washed out. My third attempt I felt better and I have stayed with it. You will come out the other side if you stick with it. I am never going back for any scaremongering this is it for me.

About 15 years/30 pounds ago, I had an epiphany on the long commute home from my stressful job. I realized that while there were so many things in my life I could not control, I did have control over what I chose to put in my mouth. I knew low carb was the way to go, but I didn’t know to increase fat or to do intermittent fasting. I lost 20 pounds, but gained half back. Now with Keto and normally a 6 hr eating window, it’s so easy and I can cheat on occasion with no ill effects.

Great discussion! I DO think MORE discussion needs to be had on aging protein needs (I'm 68) and how to manage this, given our lower absorption and efficiency in muscle retention... sick of all the young bodybuilder vids... I'm older, workout and try to eat 20g of protein several times a day but NO ONE is really discussing THIS and it's impact on ketosis and how us oldies should be handling protein best. Fortunately I'm at a stage in my life where Keto IS easy... I have the time to track with carb manager and enough $ to afford healthy foods. I sometimes walk down ALL the grocery aisles and just laugh/cry these days to see how much of our system is based around unhealthy food units...it's EVERYWHERE! Still enticing at times but I feel sooo much better, I just go get some more Ora Salmon and farm eggs and smile at all the stuff in everyone's baskets. Concocting meals is fun, but I LOVE to cook. And fortunately there is a growing number of snack foods, like cheese whips, that are quite tasty... still learning to not get swayed by quick fixes like mct oils. BUT...PLEASE! More attention to the elderly & protein management... there is NOTHING on this out there...

I have seen videos on your topic, they indicate a bolus of protein of approx 40g to initiate muscle synthesis. The addition of leucine (3g or more) can reduce the requirement for such a large intake [example, 25g of protein + an additional 3g of leucine]. Also look into catechin (myostatin inhibitor). If you haven't had occasion to see any videos presented by Bart Kay, take the opportunity to do so, you will find him quite enlightening.

New research coming out soon on Carnivore that is privately funded. Moderate exercise 150min/wk, meat protein is better digested due to our long small intestine and heck, tell them to eat meat till full. I’m nutritional ketogenic but lean more protein very very low carb. Almost 60 & feel 30.

    • @thomasgronek6469

A bolus of protein larger than 35g/feeding,, or the addition of 3g of leucine when eating less than that helps prevent sarcopenia.

I was really delighted to hear Dr. Weiss talk about the behavioral piece of the puzzle. Information is of no use if we aren't in a headspace where we can put it to work. The transtheoretical model of change really takes that into account.

There are groups who do the keto diet who do use all the good oils not only saturated. You do have to be careful they don’t fall back onto the bad oils which has cause the issues though. As far as the kids and schools it isn’t the vending machine or the people who stock them it’s the government who has forced and told us what we can stock in them. The school nutrition systems need to change.

unfortunately many nutritionists are not really qualified to give dietary advice too. They will give as patients to eat less fat and exercise more.

We are hunter gatherers, we are meant to run after animals on an empty stomach during the day, (sympathetic nervous system) then catch the animal and cook and eat it around a fire at night. The fire provided warmth, safety and a social gathering point to share experiences and build social bonds.
We are meant to eat our main meal at night, when we have all night to digest it. (Parasympathetic nervous system). We are meant to put on extra fat at night, so we have an extra fuel reserve the following day.

I appreciate her attitude about how to approach weight loss and health. It frustrating with the current dogma of just do it or your lazy. I agree with her 100% on education. This time around I said this is the last time, so I just took the fire house approach to learning as much as I could about nutrition and biochemistry. I can say with almost certainty that my relationship with food has changed and I don't want to eat the pizza or ice cream because I understand how my body will react at a cellular level. Thank you for another great podcast and spreading the word.

I agree, She starts with the premise of the importance of maintaining an optimal Ω6 : Ω3 ratio, then advocates the increased intake of avocados and nuts (aren't they high in Ω6)

The Keto diet is restricted. When your planning a meal for a family of four people cost and convenience come into play. That’s why whatever diet you prefer, the one that restricts the simple carbohydrates will work . It will keep you away from type II diabetes. I think that’s the goal.

    • @junkgirltoo5005

Peter Mota I just make a protein, veg and salad and if hubby or others want some carb or potatoes bake a potato or rice. Then I add butter or salad dressings for me. Spending less on food and couldn’t be easier. Just real easily available whole food. Some I buy like eggs best local quality and grass fed ground beef then other cuts of meat in grocery store. I don’t even add MCT or fancy other keto stuff anymore. Maybe your family is pickier than others. KISS principal applies here too. 😀😀

We have a family of five, soon to be six (although it’ll be at least a year before the new addition eats real food)... and our whole family is now on Keto. My 7 and 5 years old boys’ behavior and mood has stabilized. I think we just avoided an ADHD diagnosis. They know why we are doing this: both for health reasons long term and behavioral issues now. It’s amazing the change in them. My boys are HIGHLY intelligent and this is going to fuel them far beyond what their peers are getting.

  • @thomasgronek6469
    @thomasgronek6469 Před 4 lety

I don't understand the addition of 'healthy' fats (avocado oil and nuts). Won't that throw off the Ω6 : Ω3 ratio.

Still amazed that Low Fat is so prevalent. When I was taught in High School Biology that we are a Lipid Based System. Photosynthesis was for Plants. Oh this was the 60’s before me me me me became the name of the game.
Get rid of Cows yet turn Homo Saipan into Cows.
People have been such a disappointment to each other. Why all the attachment to Animals is so emotional.
What does she mean KETO long term bad or not sustainable. It’s just whole food. God forbid we deny ourselves what we preceive as beneficial/right as healthy.
What is all this; placating fence walking going on in the Low Carb KETO world. You know the definition of a Moderate: One who cannot decide. Wish-washy. No commitment - to anything: anything to get along.
Thank God Man has a life span. Man has become His own Worst Enemy. Do not like this guest - she has No Passion for her knowledge.

What? Doesn't sound radically different from other mainstream diet advice. "Healthy whole grains"? Carb loading and carbohydrate needs? Lots of people need to be discouraged from doing keto? And did she say CUPCAKES??? No, thanks.

I agree, 'healthy' whole grains threw me for a loop. Maybe she's trying to coddle, appease, or appeal to those with little or no exposure to the facts about the deleterious quality of that stuff. I hope she doesn't believe what she said (I'm trying to be polite).
