- Today, we're going to explore a Paper Mario themed internet browser created by MediaBrowser, Inc. in 2000. MediaBrowser was a company that partnered with Nintendo to create many Nintendo-themed internet browsers. During the Dot Com Bubble of the early 2000s, MediaBrowser had a big opportunity to capitalize on this internet craze, and created a unique way to surf the web with your favorite characters. Let's fire up the virtual machine and give it a look!

That is not a gloomba. That is the blue goomba brother along with the red one!
You know, that's a very astute observation, I actually went back and checked the promo art for those two and you're dead on! Thanks for the correction
Ah yes, my favorite characters. Goomba and Gloomba. They really chose the most important goombas for this theme.
Right? Like they still had partners left to work with lol
Imagine Watching CZcams On the Paper Mario Browser
Has that dated but charmingly simple quality that marked so much early-2000s media and Internet aesthetic, doesn’t it? (Ask Jeeves, anyone?) This is also unintentionally amusing in that a popular Google Translated mod of the game, Mario, “Bowser” gets garbled into “Browser” throughout.
I really enjoyed the creativity of this era. Around every corner you'll see something new, like voice controls on Hey You Pikachu, the mobile phone connectivity for pokemon crystal, e-reader cards, all that. Everything is very streamlined now and often lacks that same magic for me
Netscape Navigator is still the best browser of all time. Back on Windows 95. Man those were the days.
I like how the window is shaped like a worn sheet of paper instead of a standard square. I didn't even know that was possible.
Probably is technically a square but has transparency around the edge to give the illusion it’s not a square
Huh, never knew Paper Mario had a themed website for that.
I’m seeing this pfp so much
@@AverageSphereno, it's the same person around the Nintendo community mostly
BOTTT
@@DreaDreamzTV no, they just have really bland comments that don't add anything to the video.
@@DreaDreamzTV that’s the second time someone called me a bot, and it’s getting annoying.
I wish I could find even a screenshot of the flash game I remember playing on the promotional website before the game's release. It was Mario crossing a lava river on rocks and I think Kammy was on the other side
This sounds really interesting, I may have to look into this too!
Such a fun, short video. Would love to see more of this!
Thank you for your input 🩷 will be taking this into consideration for future vids. Might still make some memes since they're quick and easy to put out, but I want to make more long-form videos mixed in
At first, I thought this was about accessing the internet browser in the game.
Still surreal to see such an obscure piece of media from the 2000s that I didn't know it existed.
Now all your favorite paper Mario characters can silently judge you when you go on the hub
What if you wanted to go to Star Haven but the Star Spirits said "I saw your search history"
@@paperking64 They'll throw me in the crater where Peach's castle was lol
4:19 I agree, but MediaBrowser probably didn't know anything about Paper Mario and were just given artwork by Nintendo.
That's so freaking cool! It's a shame that these links don't work anymore. I'd gladly watch more longer Videos on this channel :D
That's great to hear! Thanks for the support :) I have one long video coming after I finish streaming the TTYD remake on my Twitch
I will definitely watch that when it comes out :). Take care
This was really interesting. Love hearing about old programs and experiments from the early 2000's. Stuff that I missed out on but probably would have loved
I know I would have gone nuts for this as a kid! I used to play paper mario 64 every morning before kindergarten
If Nintendo loved us, they would bring these browsers back
Awesome video. The buttons definitely could have been a lot better, but still a great concept nonetheless.
If only someone could remake the browser for modern operating systems I'd totally use it
Now we can just theme Chrome and Firefox with fan-made Nintendo themes.
I've never made modern browser themes so I don't know how creative you can get with them 😀 that's a good thought
This is so neat!! I agree with you, they had missed opportunities with the button options.
Edit: this is PokeNick/ Nicks Retro Gameplay…I changed my name to something more professional sounding
Always a bright shining day when PokeNick himself comments on your vid
Thanks man I'm glad you enjoyed it!
@@paperking64 lol thx man!
I really enjoyed the video, I’d like to see some more like it :)
great video! i somehow knew about this already due to a post on Supper Mario Broth’s twitter account, but you went a lot nore in depth which was pretty darn cool to learn about. Would love more informative vids like this one!
I'm SHOCKED the company went bankrupt after seeing those low effort choices with the button pictures lol Maybe I need to replay Paper Mario 64, but what is that Peach art from in the corner? I don't recognize it
The Peach art comes from original promo material :) you can find it on Princess Peach's page on the Paper Mario fandom wiki
I love this channel, and I'd love to see more longform stuff! Keep up the great work!
Thank you very much for your input :) I will happily take it into consideration. I've got one more long-form video coming after I finish streaming the TTYD remake!
This is sweet!
Hey! Glad you enjoyed the vid 😀
I wish someone backwards engineered the source code for this browser so I can use the Paper Mario browser with more robust tech to watch VTubers while the Star Spirits watch upon me for no reason lol
@@EleCyon The only way to browse the web on God

Longform for the daytime,
Shortform when getting ready for bed.
So whatever you release is probably okay.
Noted, thank you very much :)
@@paperking64
Very welcome.
IVE FOUND MY NEW FAVEROUTE CZcamsR!
the mario paper is web browser huh
Longer content is great!
Subbed. ❤
Thanks so much for subbing 🩷
Awesome overview, had no idea Paper Mario had a browser like this- I perhaps wonder if the busted links on the sidebar could be accessed using the Wayback Machine? :3
There might be a higher chance that the direct links would be accessible :) the links on the side use a mediabrowser "forwarder" link which is less likely it could have been snapshotted
@@paperking64 Right. That makes sense. Maybe if I ever get the time I'll test it out, thanks for the info!
This is a pretty nice piece of half lost media. Wish Nintendo did something like this on the Nintendo Switch.
If someone revived this concept for modern browsers I would totally use it!
Hrm... I wonder how hard it would be to rig the Microtron to pull video data from somewhere else, like a youtube channel or twitch stream
crazy fascinating
As soon as I saw this I knew I had to get it and take a look
@@paperking64 wish nintendo would realize that everything they do or have done is archived and we will find it eventually, so they should just make it more easily accessible 😅
What is this gameplay?!
The reason none of these work on recent versions of Windows is that they’re not really browsers in and of themselves; they’re basically just containers which embed Internet Explorer. Because recent versions of Windows no longer have IE, there is nothing for them to use and so they can’t run. Compatibility modes basically emulate old bugs or other behaviors for existing programs, but it all works on top of what is already there. Since IE is no longer present, there is nothing to fall back on, and it’s not feasible for Microsoft to adapt all its behaviors to Edge.
Hey I did a dub of luigi's diary if you want to watch it you don't have to if you do though it's on my channel I haven't heard anyone's opinion on my luigi impression cause nobody's watched it yet😅.
I'll have to give it a look! Thanks for letting me know
