I attempted to make this video a bit more concise than the Yukari one, but it still ended up being pretty long since I included a lot of scenes from Junpei himself to add context, and to let the characters speak for themselves to an extent. Junpei is such an amazing character and his development is why I consider him objectively the best bro character and seeing him mature is why he is the GOAT. Also being the most logical and rational person in the answer just shows of much my boy has grown.
My personal favorite bro character is Ryuji for sure, but I think Junpei was the most well written one out of all of them. His growth was super goated
I dont know how intentional this was but Junpei telling Chidori about the Hermit mission could also be seen as a parallel to Hermes, as he was a messenger for all of the gods and didn't pick alliances. Obviously Junpei wasn't trying to help Strega or go against SEES but still.

Yukari is not really Junpei's friend at the begining of the Journey, she has known him from a while, but she is mostly annoyed about Junpei antics. At the end of the Journey Jumpei himself ask Yukari (when they lost their memories) why are they friends. You skipped two important events, when they defeat lovers, everyone gets credit, except of him and show his jealousy and gets angry, the second aspect that you forgot is that after Yukari confronted Mitsuru he realised how empty he felt was his whole life and in the movies he was deeply angry about the dark hour ending as it was his whole reason of living.
Maybe acquaintances would’ve been a better term for the beginning, but idk they seemed close enough and familiar enough with each other in my eyes to be considered friends. It reminds me of a sibling dynamic where they kinda pick and tease at each other, but do care for each other even if they get on each others nerves. That’s just my view anyway

Yeah, it's kinda sad the first part was so rushed. Junpei's character was interesting even before Chidori came around.
I definitely prefer Junpei in some aspects to the later 'best friend' characters Atlus would give us due to the fact he isn't immediately your bestest buddy who follows behind everything you do throughout the entire game.
He acts friendly towards you initially because he sees you as another newbie in school, so he wants to show you the ropes.
That there is kind of a nod to his Persona Hermes who, like most know is a messenger.
Other ways we see Junpei expressing know-how is through ways he expands your options, giving you your online MMO which leads to a social link with the gamer
Him bringing up the school rumors, weaving a scary story based on the Fuuka Rumors, and being the one who suggests everyone has sushi later.
As the Magician, Junpei turns what would have been a bleak year with practically no good moments, to opportunities for a good-time that end up bringing people together one way or another.
And his friendship with Makoto is rocky, but evens out until they're proper best buds towards the end.
My personal favorite is Ryuji just cause I have a lot of fondness for him and his character, but I think "objectively" speaking Junpei is the best one with the best character arc. Like you said his relationship with Makoto was the most realistic one, and his growth in general with how he indirectly advances the story a lot of the time makes him more important than people realize
Junpei has the best character arc, but I think the connection Ryuji has to the thieves is understated to the point he never gets to his full potential.

Strong contender for best p3 character imo. While everyone else goes through their own arcs that deal with death in either a literal or metaphorical way, Junpei’s plays into it a lot more than the others. He’s just the GOAT, really not much to say that your analysis hasn’t already. Zeno Robinson absolutely KILLED IT in all the big scenes, probably one of my favorite performances in the game, a perfect cast right there.

Zeno Robinson might be my favorite VA in Persona now he actually did such an insane job as Junpei. Junpei’s confrontation with death in the last arc was probably the most human one. He was really considering just forgetting everything, but with the help of Makoto and Chidori he was able to snap out of it and get himself back in the groove. His reactions to everything were great where he’s got the utmost optimism to keep himself from going crazy at first to the opposite. I don’t mean to keep rambling though so I’ll keep it at that haha
Also… let’s just say that photo is my April fools joke haha
Honestly the only other strong contenders I can think of for best p3 party member other than makoto are Aigis and yukari (aki, shinji, and even mitsuru or ken come close as well but nobody is topping junpei, makoto, yukari and aigis)
Also small detail I love is Junpei‘s exam results, with his last exam score jumping from very low average which also shows his competence and his struggle with how to apply himself.

I always find it amazing that by the end of the game he's scoring above Aigis, which it makes sense but it's just really funny to me haha. Junpei is the MAN.

Junpei's Second awakening to me seems about equivalent to Ryuji's scene in the final palace.
I think that junpei may definitely be my favorite bro character is all of the persona series. I really felt with his struggles of self worth and seeing him find a reason to stay strong and push forward gave me hope for myself.
Junpei has one of the more relatable character arcs in the series for sure imo. It's great to hear you were able to relate to him and have it help you! It's always amazing when a piece of media is able to do that

Junpei (and also Yukari too), have always felt so real to me. As you said, he really is dissapointed in himself for how he was before the start of the story. That's something really relatable to me, as I myself have often also found myself dissapointed with how things were. Luckily i've had good parents, but that kind of self loathing is relatable, and even the part about him still being upbeat despite it

28:24 Now I’d like to shine a spotlight on Tresmu- I’ll just call him Tres. Anyway, in the manga adaptation Tres in the awakening was so powerful it not only blasted through Jin like in the game (who reflects fire) but also nearly burned Takaya to death and Tres had to be restrained by Thanatos the ultimate form of the Death Arcana.
I gotta read the manga adaptations for the Persona games. I got all of them on my shelf I just never got around to them.

I tend to be pretty cherry around several people but when it's time to get down to it, I can and will get real and serious, or so I am told by my friends... Still and the ending? Yeah I was thinking about going into phycology or something, maybe be a therapist? I'm still unsure but I'm working towards it now, I'm sure I'll figure it out
As long as you’re working towards figuring out what you wanna do for your future everything will work out well. I think Junpei is one of the more realistic characters in persona cause he’s literally just a bro with a good heart, and that’s something anybody can really get down with
His personality is also another reason why his friends outside of SEES and Kenji Tomichika and Ryoji (analysis please?🙏🏼)as they both have similar personality traits also I’m shocked you didn’t mention his friendship with Ryoji that much and especially the hot springs scene and sorry for all of the comments on the videos
I haven't played The Answer in FES yet (gotta finish The Journey first) and the snippets of the banter is so intriguing to me cuz I only let myself get exposed to the bosses and the OST. I'm actually itching to just skip to The Answer cuz I already played Portable as FEMC but for Makoto and the difficulty jump in The Answer I need to get through it ig
Overall, I think you did da man justice with this analysis. Out of all the Persona characters out there, I relate to him the most and this is something I realized recently. Lack of motivation to do anything, desperate to have a worth, jealousy, etc. There was a time where I made my jealousy, well... my entire online personality basically. It's not great, especially if that feeling is towards your friend that's super skilled of something. I see that with Junpei, ever so slightly his jealousy becomes hatred and I know too damn well how that feels like. Even if I don't do that anymore, the lack of motivation and just overall self hatred is still there.
I appreciate that about Junpei. This is getting personal real quick but I appreciate knowing that a fictional character can be a mirror of myself-- not only as a mirror of my struggles in daily life, but also a mirror of what I can do and who I can be. Right now I don't have a good reason to study, do my hobbies, etc but if Junpei can find Chidori as his driving force to improve himself as a person, then I can and should too. If Junpei can fulfill and be his long forgotten dream job, then I can too. It's refreshing in a way, letting myself slip into his shoes just a tiny bit.
ANYWAYS I'm getting personal. Overall great analysis, I'm a fan of Junpei, so I think this is awesome. Need some work on the editing side of things, I think there needs to be a tiny pause between all the talking after showing a scene, and the music didn't really match with the tone of your voice and what's happening on screen-- but it's fine. I suggest taking music from other franchises, cuz Persona music in a Persona related video can get old fast
Thanks for the pointers! I felt the same way about the music but I figured for this analysis I’ll just stick to using the persona ost and branch out in the ones going forward to keep things fresh. Also thank you for sharing your thoughts and connection to Junpei! It’s always one of my favorite aspects of making these videos because I know just how much these characters mean to people, so I do try my best to give them the Justice they deserve.
I think a lot of people could resonate with Junpei as a person and I know I definitely could in my teenage years, and that’s what makes him a really good character. His struggle is one of the most relatable cause it’s something most younger folk nowadays have to deal with at some point. I’m starting to ramble on myself so I’ll just leave it there haha. I feel like you focused a lot on the movies and Chidori, Junpei, even after the monorail incident, is still very jealous of Makoto, even more so when they defeat the arcane of their lovers (which you skipped) It is seen that he is still envious of him, showing him now by his attitude towards him, treating him rudely both at school and in the dormitories at the games, Junpei instantly gets along with him, as seen in the movie, there are a lot of Junpei's roses with Makoto, The manga places a lot of emphasis on this and this is important since later Junpei apologizes to Makoto, saying how stupid he was, showing that he matures, the movies just skip that, It takes Junpei a long time to get along with Makoto.
I didn't really focus on the movies too much, at least I didn't feel like I did, and I tried to focus on his relationship with Makoto with the jealousy and all that, although it could have went a little more under the radar considering a lot of the focus went toward the Chidori dynamic. Regarding the manga I haven't read that fully so I wouldn't know too much about that adaptation
6:38 Orpheus is also a fire using persona so it is kinda stealing his thunder. Most best friend characters in persona have an element different from the protag. Junpei is the exception.

While I think I like Ken just a little more, Junpei is absolutely fantastic. The fact the token 'comic relief pervy guy' actually gets serious about a girl (and almost completely stops being pervy when he does) is extremely refreshing after P4/5. His moments where he loses his cool feel completely believable and not cringy,and even though I dislike the anime trope of 'Character screams really loudly as a loved one dies', Zeno Robinson's little sob at the end of his scream really sold Chidori's death as a tragedy that hits Junpei incredibly hard.
Zeno Robinson did such an amazing job with his role and I'm glad he's been getting the recognition he deserves for it. I do gotta agree with the stuff you said about the "pervy guy" stuff because my god everytime I play Persona 4, as much as I love that game, sometimes I really just wanna box Teddie for how weird he is lmao. It's a breath of fresh air in the Persona series for sure to see someone like Junpei.
Well this video bring back the old memories i have when i play persona 3 fes like when he first introduced himself to Makoto my reaction was "ok great first day of school and i already Made friends yay" but his Jealousy at the beginning make me feel like "bro you need to chill out a little bit" and when fighting lover arcana boss was "okay seriously you need to stop cuase we just put our life on the line like five minute ago" and when he start blaming Makoto for everything "okay you need to stop there because i know you are in panic but playing the blame game won't solve anything"even though i know junpei just acting like normal people in all above situation and when we look at it from Makoto perspective it connect beautifuly because Makoto don't understand human emotion at the two situation above his reaction probably just "huh okay" and for getting blame his reaction would be "okay sorry for causing all of this i Will find a way to fix it" and when when Makoto was alone fighting nyx and after the explosion when he say why only him Makoto probably Will answer "cause i am special"

I probably should have covered how he acted after the lovers since it's a pretty important detail, but at the time I didn't think it was necessary to go more in depth on his jealousy and inferiority to Makoto since I had already covered it a lot.

I’m suprised you didn’t bring up Yakushimo because he gets a lot to flag for interrupting Yukari and Makoto but I felt it was right he was sent to do so it also most likely wouldn’t have been what happened after he met Chidori
Love this video because I saw a comment where it was like “Junpei is as deep as a kiddie pool” and it just Infuritated me
Persona characters aren’t usually the deepest, but even if that’s the case it doesn’t mean they can’t be well written. People don’t know how to differentiate the two
I always admire how they nailed the feeling of joining a club/workspace that already has been going on before you joined. SEES is already established about a year before you join. Heck, it's got the official/unofficial backing of the Kirijo group which runs the whole school (and island) and is actually listed as a school club. People already have their own friend groups/agenda. People don't immidiately jell with one another, heck they even go so far as to make it so that certain people have agendas against other people in the group with Yukari being suspicious of Mitsuru and Ken wanting to kill Shinjiro. It all felt very natural. Nothing against the tightknitt group of the Investigation Team and Phantom Thieves, just prefer what SEES had in terms of story telling. And people like Junpei and Fuuka are great help with connecting each disparate group to form one whole effective shadow extermination unit.
I feel pretty similarly. It’s why I can see where people come from with saying SEES are “co workers” even if that’s just totally wrong by the end. The way the group evolves from that feel of being forced to do it to becoming close and doing it for each other more or less is really cool and mostly realistic
Two things I sort of want to touch on. One thing that I remember hearing is that Hermes was originally supposed to be the Persona used by the protagonist. If that's true or not, I'm not sure, but it is interesting.
Second, I really enjoy the bond he has with the FeMC in Portable. Junpei almost kind of becomes like an older brother to her in how he looks out for and helps her. While he does start off still being jealous (and comes off a bit sexist, though Mitsuru is quick to put a stop to that), he ends up still being, arguably, her best male friend.
The first one, yes I can confirm it’s true. In the Persona 3: Official Design Works, Soejima mentioned Hermes was initially designed to be the protagonist’s Persona before switching to Orpheus. He even commented the current Hermes design looks too cool to be Junpei’s Persona
The second one, I agree LOL. I think I like Junpei’s bond with the female protagonist moreso than the male protagonist. Idk why but the two just kinda clicked into me

He doesn't have a dedicated social link, but the linked episodes are basically the substitute for them, and in a lot of ways I prefer them over normal social links tbh. I'm sure you'll enjoy it when you get to P3R!

I personally identify with Junpei to much it started hitting home hard....I was a class clown, and instead into basketball and was good at it when I was younger but it just kinda dropped off when I was bullied - luckily I've had a boringly normal and happy family life unlike him - I've struggled with these same problems, of having purpose and meaning and being validated - but his relationship with Chidori is something that just hit me personally the hardest; my first serious/long relationship was with a timid girl, who was depressed (MDD), struggling to find purpose and meaning in life, with red hair, whom opened up and was a very different person after we went our separate ways - I'm constantly rewatching the cutscenes with Junpei and Chidori from persona 3 reload, and it's heartwarming to see Junpei grow and mature - *_HE JUST LIKE ME FR FR 😭😭_*

I can definitely relate to some of Junpei's struggles as well, and I think a lot of people can since in the earlier years of your life it can be easy to find yourself in a situation like him. His backstory and growth are some of the most human ones in the series, and I appreciate him a lot as a character because of it

My favorite character in the entire series! :D it sucks that ever since reload came out ive been seeing him getting so much hate and insane takes about him i started wondering if i played the same game as these people
Some of the complaints are justified but I do find a lot of the hate, albeit not THAT common from what I've seen, to be really bizarre since if you finish the game you can't deny how much he changed

Honestly, I still think he's the worst bro character because he couldn't put his envious feelings aside for one night and nearly got everyone killed because of it
The fact that he only starts taking things seriously after Chidori died also rubbed me the wrong way as it shouldn't have taken her dying for him to finally get it together
Finally, Junpei snapping at Makoto was completely unjustified as they already knew the truth behind Tartarus, The Dark Hour, and The Fall as well as who caused it all
I'm not sure if anyone else noticed but the only time Junpei was relevant during the story was when Chidori was involved
Junpei is 1 of 2 characters in S.E.E.S whose existence doesn't affect the story at all (the other being Koromaru) as Chidori can talk to Makoto instead
(I also think Chidori would be a far better Hanged Man Social Link Rep on both the male and female routes given her's and her persona Medea's backstory and I feel Makoto can relate to her better given he was the same way as her at the start)

I have seen some people get on him for it, yeah, although the majority do not
Vic will always be Junpei to me, he just has this charm that Zeno just cannot replace. His lines to Chidori just always breaks my heart whenever I max out his social link. I can absolutely say for sure! His lines were perfect in each moment, and I won't get that feeling of Vic's rage during Chidori's death god, it HURTS.

Considering how obnoxious Junpei can be, i can't really blame people for not liking him at the start. First impressions are very important, after all
But i think Junpei is a good example where you'll get rewarded if you actually try to dig deeper
100%. He leaves a bad first impression since he acts like a douche, but just like all the other characters he’s much more than that if you look past the surface level

@@YandereGogeta the FES version they're twins , Makoto is still Death's host, my planned Reload one, Kotone is from a second universe where she's from the time of the Fall that she basically betrayed her friends and killed Ryoji, she's taken to Makoto's universe. As we have the talks of the Kirijo group's plan to using the Shadows to manipulate space and time, this isn't out of the realm of Persona
