  • Saying CRT Tube is redundant as CRT already means Cathode Ray Tube... :P
In today's video, we take apart an old VHS camera to get the view finder's CRT display, and we use that to make a very small pocket oscilloscope. Thanks for watching! :)

I really like your channel. I think you are doing a really nice job of creating these demos. It's not overly simplistic and not overly detailed. You also point out good resources to use and safety guidelines (for the most part). You might want to have the text captions you sometimes add show up for longer in a gentler manner, but that's my opinion, you might be doing it on purpose. I think an oscilloscope like you reviewed would be a perfect way to test the pocket one you built. I'd love to get one of those and see how it holds up.

Tip: The smoothing capacitor mostly tells you the maximum input voltage range. Is it for example rated 6.3V, you can be sure it must be below that.

  • @hermestrismegistus4784

In the early 90`s I used an earlier model camcorder CRT (2.5 cm diagonal) in a similar setup, on the front side of an audio amplifier (built by myself) to give an interesting video display of the music. Those CRT`s were so good, that Panasonic used them to build miniature portable TVs... I wanted to build an oscilloscope using that CRT, but electromagnetic deflection limited the band drastically. Nice to see people still interested in old school electronics - a lot to learn from there. Nice video!

I'd call it a nibble instead of a bite to be honest. I'm slowly making my way around the each basic electronic component to make sure I don't skip over anything. And programming (c++) is a whole new world. Saying I've taken a fraction of a chunk out of either one would be foolish of me XD And I've already been subscribed to eev as well. There is really nothing special to it... Just two coils, capacitors and the transformers of a old microwave.

    • @eulemitbeule5426
      @eulemitbeule5426 Před 7 lety +1

You can eliminate a lot of these factors rather easily... You can tune the coils by measuring the individual capacitance of the second coil with a multimeter, then adjust the number of windings to get a good resonant frequency (or just create some Leydener flasks, you can control the capacitance rather easily). And just replace the spark gap with an IGBT/thyristor etc. Expensive, but can perfectly be regulated with some sort of microcontroller (via a Darlington-circuit).
But yeah, a video about this coil would be nice, i am interested how good this makeshift toroid is... (I want to make a bigger one myself, but i do not want to get shocked by a f*cked up toroid).

I have bought one of the LCD digital scopes from amazon. Very surprising how well they work.

This is such a neat idea! I had no idea those little CRTs could be powered with just 5 volts. Also that pocket oscilloscope is really neat, seems to have a bunch of functions for its size and price, I would love to have one lol. I do have a much older, bigger oscilloscope - an eico 435 from 1965 that I bought from an antique store. It works pretty well considering its age, but there's a little interference at lower settings, I'm thinking an electrolytic capacitor, possibly the filter, went bad, as they do on older electronics.

That small oscilloscope is really neat. It would be handy for testing devices when the measurements don't have to be as good as with a $5000 oscilloscope. If it breaks it isn't a big deal since it isn't that expensive.
Cool idea using the viewfinder from a camcorder for something! One could even calibrate it with the commercial oscilloscope to be able to make some sort of measurements, but having a frequency option would be really useful.

Ive been playing with several CRT's, from cameras, and I notice same as you see in 6:50 - that the line is pin sharp - until you remove the vertical coil - then it goes fuzzy.
Its like it uses the Vertical coil somehow do the Focus as well as deflect. This is different to larger CRTs in an old TV - focus pot does nothing on these tiny crts when coils disconnected .
Does anyone know what this signal should be? How we can replicate this?
I would like it much sharper that what is shown here and on my tiny crts. ta.

Cool build, is there a way to ad trim pots to the device to help show cycles that are blurry? Also is there a way to show voltage peak to peak?

As an electrical engineering student one of those pocket oscilloscopes would be rather useful. Love the videos!

This is a neat project. I will say though, if you can't get a salvaged camcorder there are kits you can buy that let you build a pocket oscilloscope. They are fun little soldering projects from what I've seen.

I think its amazing how small they could get these CRT tubes. When I first heared that they used CRT tubes in these camcorders I was pretty amazed.

Amazing video, where on earth do you even get these cool ideas? I could really use a scope like this for my senior design and other projects!

Could you do a video on how to salvage and identify parts from circuit boards like that monster one from that camcorder?

I couldn't help but think of the 60's TV show "The Outer Limits". Their intro was the screen of an Oscilloscope with the narrator saying "There is nothing wrong with your television...".

Is that little scope the kit version, or is it pre-built? I think it comes in both styles from Banggood.

Awsome project. I was amazed it ran on 5 volts!
I would love to have one of those pocket Oscilloscopes. It would come in handy building a theramin. (Another project my son wants to do.)
