      Exactly. As a teen I did not even like their “new stuff” at the time and I was the demographic. I must admit I did enjoy some of the stuff from like Woodstock 94, but they never progressed. They started wearing makeup and went along with the emo trends of My Chemical Romance and all of that. I mean when an established band needs to copy the common trends it’s pretty pathetic. I get that into one’s late 30s it would be a bit silly to continue to have songs about alcohol and masterbating, but if all you can do is copy what’s trendy maybe it’s time to stop. Whenever Green Day comes up I think “What if they just stopped in about 1996”. They would be this fun throw back band. Reminding people of Zema and ice beer, but they obviously made millions going completely mainstream and selling out stadiums for people that were not even born when they produced listenable music.

I am saying that if your whole mission statement as a band is to simply be a gimmick, void of any discernible identity of itself, you're not gonna last as a group. You're just not. Being a touring band, no matter how big the label you're signed to is, is fucking tough. You've got to really have the passion for your craft in order to survive it without burning out, and these people have been doing it since the early 90's, all 3 of them, without a single one of them backing out.
      You can say whatever may about the quality of their music, but to suggest a band like that is merely "riding the coattails" is to be a profound idiot.

Any style progresses, changes, without variability any style and in General anything will die out. Underground and avant-garde are available in any style. Thus, it is impossible to be limited and unambiguous, these properties allow you to degrade. Degradation is the absence of development, progress, and change. Don't want to listen to pop punk, listen to hardcore punk, don't want hardcore, listen to pop punk.

Try looking up the Gillian street collective. They played with Operation Ivy. The offspring had been touring in a van since 1987 and have almost been around as long as Nofx. Seen them twice, in 93,and 94 just after smashed launched at Roman’s Ron d vu, in rapid city sd. They opened for the bouncing souls. I helped load their equipment into the venue from their van because I didn’t have the $5 to get in. And for the record punk was over in 78.

    2) i think johnny is a try hard and a hypocrite. dude literally said that trump is the only hope when he should be going against people like that. doesn’t punk mean against big oppressive government, rather than style? besides the sex pistols are literally industry plants themselves. without vivienne westwood’s designs they wouldn’t have popularized the punk look. i think he should be focusing on his current bands and treating his sick wife instead of going around, projecting negativity on everyone, and being a grump. sex pistols still slaps hard tho ngl

      Honestly Johnny is just mad about green day because his band never won anything and he only thinks he's above them because the sex pistols were around before green day was even a thought. It's not about the skill, it's about the passion. Everyone has their own expressions and the way I see it, you don't have to hate on a band or artist just because you don't like their sound. Just because a certain sound is there that you don't like doesn't mean it's bad, clearly if green day and the sex pistols are both in Fame and the music industry then there is nothing that Johnny bad about green day. He should be happy that the band loves his music because sadly not a lot of people wanted the sex pistols to perform because of how vulgar people saw them as. No hate towards green day or sex pistols but they both have made music history and they are both great.

      @RawPower867 Před 6 lety +11

      The whole "they're just jealous" argument is really tired, and fails to address the substance of what he's actually saying.
      For one thing, John Lydon is a multi-millionaire celebrity whose band got in the RnR Hall of Fame at least 10-15 years before Green Day did. Moreover, his band is recognized as one of the most important and influential of all time, despite only putting out one album. There isn't a whole lot he has to be jealous of here.
      Second, he doesn't hate Green Day because they're successful. He hates them because they call themselves punk rockers when they've done nothing to earn that tag. At no point in their career did they ever pose a serious threat (or *any* threat at all) to the established order, nor have they done anything original or groundbreaking with their music. They're really just suburban kids who got rich and famous copying the 70s punk sound and writing catchy songs without any of the danger or attitude that characterizes punk. Those are perfectly valid complaints, I'd say.

Steve Jones and Paul Cook were great rock and roll musicians and John wrote interesting lyrics about interesting topics. But personal taste is personal. John doesn't claim he and e.g. Glen Matlock were "loyal" to each other or "united," and that's irrelevant to how good music is. Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker hated each other personally and knew they sounded great together.

    Compare that to Green Day on the other hand who, while they have had their spells of quite non-punk music (21st century break down, Uno! Dos! Tre!, and even American Idiot) they have come back with Revolution Radio, and even though they are considered "sell outs" they never became the stuck up shit that Johnny Rotten did. They still play small gigs, usually under different names (Pinhead Gunpowder, Foxboro Hottubs) they still hold up the punk, or pop punk, spirit in a way that Johnny Rotten sure as hell doesnt do anymore.

    Billie Joe has said before that he writes whatever feels at the moment and that he could've written basket case over and over the last 30 years, but he wanted to write what he feels and if someone doesn't like it they don't have to listen to it. Many don't realize that some of the songs in the last 20 years were written when he was a teenager. He releases songs that fit the album they are working on. Like Haushinka from Nimrod. He wrote that like 7 years before Nimrod. I agree with Johnny, though, that they are so far gone that they've lost their sound. Personally my favorite work of theirs was the Lookout! Records releases. And I still say Paper Lanterns is the best song they've ever done. Especially the like 10 minute live version they used to do and need to bring back.

Maybe he sees Green Day as "mall punk," and it isn't bred from "true" anger. Thus, everything they do is an imitation of the "truly angry" punk bands. Just a guess.

      Hey man, this is absolutely not the case for green day. I think they get a bad wrap because many of their fans are middle class but the band members were not at all. Billie Joe grew up in a working class part of SF. His mum was a waitress, his dad was a truck driver. His dad died when he was ten. His mum had to provide for his whole family with a waitresses salary. Mike Dirnt was from a broken home, his mum had a drug problem and struggled with money so he worked his own job as a teenager to provide for himself and help his family out. Tre Cool didn't have such a rough upbringing but was lower middle class at best by the sound of things. Were you making this point about like Blink 182 I would understand but not true of Green Day at all.

    I literally see Sex Pistols shoes on display at multiple brands lol they even have a converse line. Like I understand that the original purpose of the Sex Pistols was not to get to that point, but neither was Green Day. It’s true later in their career they had more power pop/pop rock style of music, especially now. But when Green Day was focused on pure early punk sounding stuff (so basically everything before warning, though even all on of those albums it was obvious they liked to explore other sounds other then just punk rock) they were not craving main stream appeal. Of course when they got a major record deal offer they took it, and knew they’d be labeled as sell outs, which funnily enough the Sex Pistols did something similar. Though I think John Lyndon is no longer the punk star he wants to make himself out to be, he went from a person who rejected all forms of government and all its leaders, to literally saying Donald Trump is “the only hope” and appearing on countless reality TV shows. John Lyndon in his prime used to be a symbol of punk, but now is just a grumpy fool.

      @@justinlarsen2281Exactly though, the Sex Pistols are still banned some places years later, but they haven’t made music in about the same amount time. I can’t even count the amount of reality tv shows that John has been on. Along with the fact that there are also very popular car commercials using Sex Pistols music. Plus the sec pistols shoes. Green Day has fought for many social issues over the years as well, most notably the LGBTQ community. Green Day is far from Disney channel, with songs about the use of crystal meth, masturbation, and social issues/politics. People only say that because how popular they got. John Lyndon is only good at being an asshole anymore, and other punk legends and classic punk bands have recognized how he pretends to be the only one not to sold out, when he has made millions and millions of dollars on selling his image to every tv show know to man. He was literally on judge Judy.

The Sex Pistols brand and logos don't belong to Lydon and if you watch early interviews he doesn't even want to mention them because they were swindled out of their money and royalties pretty bad. Green Day are a fine group but there's nothing risky ,controversial or unacceptable about supporting any of their views. They're all public views. Lydon however was blacklisted for outing Jimmy Seville as a child predator, and criticized heavily government bureaucracy which cost him his career and was even brought up as a traitor in parliament for his lyrics, which at the time was a hangable offense. His songs with time have only become more controversial and are still banned do to lyrics. Brendan Kelly alone has been doing his own thing, producing a mass library of his own for around 25 years, and he's still making different records through his various bands and solo work. Even if you don't like anything he's done the last 20 years, that is a fact. Using him as an example, fuck, Jello Biafra is still going strong, agree it disagree with him, he's still cranking shit out the way he wants to, and making money off it and his label. I fucking hate Rancid, mainly Lars, but they've been churning shit out for almost 30 years still to this day, Tim Armstrong did before with Operation Ivy. Jeff Ott started Crimpshrine in 1984 at age 14 after kicking Jesse Michaels out, changed the name from S.A.G., but was 12 years old when he first joined, that's a long-standing career. There's many bands like Green Day, the Offspring being the first band on an independent label have an album reach number one. Blink 182 has been around for many years, Dave Grohl continues to make records that appeal to the masses and has been in bands from the mid-eighties. This is pointless to argue.
