  • I've finally figured it out. I've found peak Oasis.
April '95 - April '96 is without a doubt, the peak of Oasis. There will never be another year where you could confidently say that every cylinder was on 100% or more. This time period features the majority of everyone's favorite gigs. Cliffs Pavilion, Sheffield Arena, Glastonbury, Earls Court, Maine Road just to name a few are all here. Then you add in other phenomenal gigs... Slane Castle, Bayside Jenny, Bournemouth, Fairfax, Cardiff and The Point Theatre gigs... and then you have The Bataclan on April 20th, 1995.
I have rarely listened to a gig before proclaiming that this is the best gig of a specific period. I would give that award to another gig, which was the second night at the SECC in Glasgow in '97. I would give that award once again to this show. I think this rivals Southend and Sheffield to a point where this might be the best of the three.
The sound of this gig is otherworldly. The DAT has given this show such a life of its own it actually sounds like you're there in the back listening to this group, and Noels acoustic set is brilliant.
Liams voice has his that Mid-'95 sound that almost sounds like Glastonbury but slightly less rasp. Noel sounds great even, even though he wont reach his vocal peak himself until '96.
And Jesus Christ, this setlist is gold. If Fade Away, Bring It On Down or Listen Up was in the setlist, it might be the greatest setlist Oasis ever assembled. The ENTIRE single of Some Might Say was sprinkled within the setlist, and it hasn't even been released yet.
There's the rumor that the band came back on stage and did an encore of Supersonic according to various sources (Paolo Hewitt's Getting High and Tony's book both say this I believe) but it was never taped, and even the video source doesn't capture it. It's hard to believe considering there encores are usually Rock 'n' Roll Star at this point. Hopefully we'll get a confirmation in the future, but as of now, I'm not sure this happened.
I can gush about this gig forever, but I'll let the boys take it away. Top 5 Definitely Maybe gig, top 5 gig of 1995, and top 15 gig of Oasis' run.
Oh, and that transition to Slide Away makes that performance top 5 all time.

Regarding the encore. The story in Tony's book is that he went out first on Noel's direction to start Supersonic (his favourite to drum on). He drummed the intro for an entire minute before the rest of the band walked out. Noel flicked his cigarette in front of Tony's drum kit. Tony watched it burn out. It wouldn't be until later Tony realised that this symbolised his goodbye. Pretty chilling.

Brilliant write-up. I’ll add the reason these April ‘95 gigs are so special is Tony’s drumming. They are in fact his last gigs. The few renditions of Some Might Say we have with Tony (this, Sheffield, Live By The Sea) all stand out with more energy with his straight forward punk style

Agreed. Tony’s drumming just synergized with Liam’s voice and (ironically) Noel’s guitar. It had more gravity and presence. The drum patterns he used when transitioning between beats was also something fun the other Oasis drummers didn’t have.

It just goes to show most of what they said regarding his drumming was simply not true. Like everyone else in the band, Tony had improved and stepped up his game. It's undeniable, these gigs prove it.

My first Oasis gig, mesmerising. Next 3 were Irvine Beach, Blackpool Empress Ballroom and New York (Roseland Ballroom)... never seen them better than in 95

Liams voice on Some Might Say at this gig is outstanding. This version and Glastonbury 95 are the closest we ever got to him perfectly matching/out doing the actual single studio version. Total power mixed with control over the high note choruses. Even though we didn't get many of these versions, I'm so glad the few we did get were captured.

Perfectly matching the studio? It’s fine but I think that’s an exaggeration, he’s flat on almost all of the A4s here. I like Glastonbury but Sheffield Arena and Globe Annexet Sweden showcase him hitting the chorus much more effectively with good aggression. He was much more accurate in 1996 too (such as at Maine Road and Loch Lomond) though there wasn’t as much power.
The best of all is The White Room 1995. He nails pretty much all the high notes but with confidence and aggression - it could’ve been an alternative studio take.

@badgasaurus4211 I guess it's all a matter of taste and opinion. Those are some awesome picks you put there as well. I'm probably just loving this concert cause for years I could only find bad audio of this gig. I'm probably just chuffed to finally have proper sound.

The one time Liam actually sang Acquiesce full lyrics (out of order, but anyway). Really rare and gold material.

This is the era I really love about Oasis, Wonderwall and DLBIA are some legendary pop anthems but this the raw rock and roll Oasis sound.

  • @badgasaurus4211
    @badgasaurus4211 Před 7 měsíci +7

Agreed, this was their absolute peak, though I think the Sheffield Arena gig was the best of the three. Better high notes from Liam

Not one I'd listened to before but would agree it's right up there, what a setlist considering that is almost a year to the day that Supersonic hit the charts. I was just that little bit too young to experience their golden era in real-time (only got into them in 98) but can only imagine what it was like getting hit with those 9 classic singles and umpteen incredible b-sides one after the other in those first few years. Cheers for the write-ups, have you ever thought that between yourself and Shakermaker's channel you could collaborate on an Oasis tour book? I know The Beatles have one (The Beatles live! by Mark Lewisohn) and I'm sure there would be an audience for it, I'd buy it at least!
