    If you can't tell the difference between comedy and what Chappelle intended here - I cannot help you. Schulz is a brilliant comedian but he is obsessed with being the 'best', he is way behind Louis, Rock, Gervais, Burr and Chappelle as modern day titans but he will get there, I have no doubt. I think dwelling on how others received the piece is beyond the point, this is Chappelle as an artist using his power as an elite orator of his time to simply and honestly convey his thoughts on the issue, nothing much beyond that. They should just accept it as it is, and kinda keep it moving. I am not ranking this with his other specials - it's like an EP, a mixtape, a side project that exists separately. Schulz's obsession for greatness, being strategic and masterful may be his shortcoming. Some of the best art is delivered as a stream of consciousness, as raw, unfiltered and unplanned emotion... not everything has to be perfect - this was about truth, sincerity, passion, mourning and healing... Chappelle turned the outdoor stage into a theatre - just the performance this time was not of comedy, but one of 'tragedy'... doesn't get anymore Shakespearean than that.

    A part that really stood out to me in Chappelle’s speech was the part where he said that he got pulled over by the cop that shot the guy immediately after asking him to drop the weapon. The cop let him off with a warning. To me, this was an incredibly profound statement that was undeveloped, but when you think about it captures what Andrew was talking about - where both the left and the right can agree. Chappelle, a black man, had a friendly interaction with a cop and was left off with a warning. He was likely recognized, pleasant, funny, and had a positive interaction with the officer. This represents the police’s relationship with the privileged, which can be both from power/wealth & from white privilege. One week later, this same cop shot someone while in a dangerous & stressful situation trying to apprehend a black suspect. This highlights that even black people can have the “white” experience with a cop. So it’s not targeting all black people, but it is affecting black people the most. This would bridge the mental gap of white people just seeing this issue as a separate issue to black people and happening to your fellow Americans. By sharing the same experience to Dave Chappelle’s police experience, they too should view the murder of these black men as if they, just like Chappelle, are black. It’s not a black issue, it’s an American issue. These are our people too. It’s just affecting OUR black people significantly more. And so we should be angry just like Chappelle.

      @trevorujjmodom535 Před 3 lety +2

      Very good point I’m surprised you have no responses.
      The primary problem is shitty police officers that shouldn’t be police officers. To be sure there is an issue of systemic racism but that’s not the primary issue when it comes to black folks dying. One awesome point that Andrew has made before is that the Marines in Afghanistan have stricter ROE than police officers in the USA. As a veteran and the son and brother of police officers I can 100% confirm this.

There were only like two or three punchlines on that half hour and it didn't get a real laugh from me but I think the jokes that were there were more for relief than to get a big laugh. Dave Chappelle's special wasn't about the comedian, It was about the man. He took off his comedian hat and he just talked. I know yall idolize him, but he is human and he is allowed to show emotion on something that impacts not only him, but his children and his community. Travyon Martin does look like Obama, slavery wasn't too long ago, and Men who fought for this country tried to fight the police system and failed. It was all too powerful.

I think he had a different goal - to simply identify with the pain of the moment and share that pain with his community. This was a piece that spoke to people of color and it was meant to do just that. It wasn’t an analysis of race relations, it was him checking in and saying “I’m right here with you, at the same time, and I’m at a loss for answers, too.”

      @@williamschlass4598 i think dave did it because the only way for him to express himself would be doing stand up. He's not on social media either so im guessing that.

      @@emmanuelespiegle7085 But he said at the beginning that no one wants to hear from celebrities like him - they want to hear from "the streets". So why is he even opening his mouth in the first place? Hes contradicting himself... And don't call that stand up...

      @@williamschlass4598 The average person on the street does not. But the people in charge of the media do.
      So he did a special. Charged them for it. Then went and said what he wanted to say anyway. Why anyone is surprised I have no idea.
