brbapappa did u not Liston it? He talked about how “why is Dave Chappelle not speaking on this” and went in on it.
Yea exactly everyone tries to say its a comedy special but its jus chapelle with something to say and getting some things off his chest...
If you can't tell the difference between comedy and what Chappelle intended here - I cannot help you. Schulz is a brilliant comedian but he is obsessed with being the 'best', he is way behind Louis, Rock, Gervais, Burr and Chappelle as modern day titans but he will get there, I have no doubt. I think dwelling on how others received the piece is beyond the point, this is Chappelle as an artist using his power as an elite orator of his time to simply and honestly convey his thoughts on the issue, nothing much beyond that. They should just accept it as it is, and kinda keep it moving. I am not ranking this with his other specials - it's like an EP, a mixtape, a side project that exists separately. Schulz's obsession for greatness, being strategic and masterful may be his shortcoming. Some of the best art is delivered as a stream of consciousness, as raw, unfiltered and unplanned emotion... not everything has to be perfect - this was about truth, sincerity, passion, mourning and healing... Chappelle turned the outdoor stage into a theatre - just the performance this time was not of comedy, but one of 'tragedy'... doesn't get anymore Shakespearean than that.
Couldn’t agree more. Schulz missed the point
Don’t think I was meant to be special... just a public lecture or ted talk!
Why don't you think you were meant to be special?
It wasn't a special... Lol it was posted as a youtube clip for free! He just wanted to get some stuff off his chest and that's the direction it went.
A part that really stood out to me in Chappelle’s speech was the part where he said that he got pulled over by the cop that shot the guy immediately after asking him to drop the weapon. The cop let him off with a warning. To me, this was an incredibly profound statement that was undeveloped, but when you think about it captures what Andrew was talking about - where both the left and the right can agree. Chappelle, a black man, had a friendly interaction with a cop and was left off with a warning. He was likely recognized, pleasant, funny, and had a positive interaction with the officer. This represents the police’s relationship with the privileged, which can be both from power/wealth & from white privilege. One week later, this same cop shot someone while in a dangerous & stressful situation trying to apprehend a black suspect. This highlights that even black people can have the “white” experience with a cop. So it’s not targeting all black people, but it is affecting black people the most. This would bridge the mental gap of white people just seeing this issue as a separate issue to black people and happening to your fellow Americans. By sharing the same experience to Dave Chappelle’s police experience, they too should view the murder of these black men as if they, just like Chappelle, are black. It’s not a black issue, it’s an American issue. These are our people too. It’s just affecting OUR black people significantly more. And so we should be angry just like Chappelle.
Very good point I’m surprised you have no responses.
The primary problem is shitty police officers that shouldn’t be police officers. To be sure there is an issue of systemic racism but that’s not the primary issue when it comes to black folks dying. One awesome point that Andrew has made before is that the Marines in Afghanistan have stricter ROE than police officers in the USA. As a veteran and the son and brother of police officers I can 100% confirm this.
White privilege is like time... it's a fuckn illusion. So is racism. Not many can see thru that unless your are awake
ok boomer
@@trevorujjmodom535 there is a systemic issue of shitty police officers ie a force that doesn't serve the public. Why would that be?

The problem with criticizing this special for not being funny is I don't think it was meant to be funny. There were only like two or three punchlines on that half hour and it didn't get a real laugh from me but I think the jokes that were there were more for relief than to get a big laugh. You have to judge things for what they are and as a social commentary for this specific moment in time this a very good special.
Natty Duck Facts it was clearly not meant to be funny. Just look at the fucking title lol
I agree. to me it wasnt a comedy special it was more of whats going on in this nation

Dave Chappelle's special wasn't about the comedian, It was about the man. He took off his comedian hat and he just talked. I know yall idolize him, but he is human and he is allowed to show emotion on something that impacts not only him, but his children and his community. Travyon Martin does look like Obama, slavery wasn't too long ago, and Men who fought for this country tried to fight the police system and failed. It was all too powerful.

I honestly just love Chappelle speaking I'm more with Alexx on this
Chapelle's special wasn't meant to be "comedy" like they said, but it's hypocrisy to then criticize him for basically delivering the message in candy format. It was just more of a PSA, and the message is more important than the jokes.
Alexx hit the nail on the head, Drew and Akaash judging it on a comedy level, but I doubt Chapelle was even tryna deliver it on a comedy level, it was just legit a PSA put into medicine in candy format...
It literally says in the description of the dave chappelle video that it isn't full written jokes just a message he wanted to get out asap. Andrew Schultz acting like he didn't do a stand up full of talking to the audience (which wasn't funny)
I would like them to review Brendan Schaub and chris delias special
but they won't because they're pussy.
Chappelle's talk wasn't about comedy. He was delivering a serious message in serious times, not trying to make people laugh.
They expected Dave to be their Token for this. It's the same as the Joe / Burr interaction on jre, Joe was put in his place.
@Chefy Dizzy whose opinion matters?
Andrew needs to understand that Chappelle was not trying to appease to his white gaze. It was a Black man venting about generations of systemic racial injustice. End of discussion.
Saying something so stupid like "white gaze" is a part of the problem, King.
yeah but was it that special? Lenny Bruce did the same before David Chappelle

This is exactly what i was thinking. it wasnt meant to be funny, it wasnt meant to be entertainment it was his special, thats it.
Akash, as a mixed black minority, please take a look at Indian slavery in africa and Saudi. It is an eye opener.
The fact you guys are still critical about the comedy aspect of his "special" is weird cause at this point of his career he's a philosopher.
is he really? A lot of the stuff he says, a great deal of poeple already know or have been saying. hes a great comedian. One of my favorites, but he isnt saying anything that enlightening. He just puts some of the stuff he says in clever ways.
LEGION OF KNICKS PODCAST - Guillermo Kyosuke not at all. Dave explained why he stayed silent and explained that these riots are the streets speaking for themselves, nobody else has said that
NONONO... HES A COMEDIAN.. and a human being... but that was NOT comedy. Definitely wasnt special.. It was just the opinion of an old black dude, that has been made rich by american capitalism, and is just reporting what he sees on tv. Dave chappelle is rich because he is loved by whites and blacks alike. I am a Black Conservative... I bow(kneel) to no master. At the end of the day.. chappelle is a comedian. Alex is totally right, like why y’all going so hard on this. This wasn’t a comedy special, it was basically him expressing his frustration, this all conversation was annoying
They themselves acknowledged it’s not a comedy speedily
Jayceon Taylor yeah, after, and they still dissected it, how can you do that when it was basically a man explaining his videos about what’s going on
Facts
I think this is just a by-product of you guys having seen Dave perform in person and having been around him in ways the rest of us have not. I think for the rest of us, 8:46 was yet another example of his brilliance. I don’t disagree with the boys very often, but given the commercial visibility and near universal praise of 8:46 by one of the greatest comedians of all time around one of the most tense moments in recent history is perhaps more important. After all, isn’t art’s value based primarily on others interpretation? The fact that it’s being discussed this much is indicative of how great it is. Just my $.02, keep up the great work, thanks for all the awesome content guys.
