- For this edition of Tartan Talks, Rocky sits down with an old friend - Barb Tewksbury. Professor, geologist, bagpiper and (most exciting for us) author of the beloved manual 'The Art of Kilt Making', Barb has made the craft of the kilt accessible for thousands of enthusiasts around the world. Her impact on the Celtic community is hard to underestimate. Her work to preserve the techniques of her own teacher has become an essential document which (we hope) will help preserve this traditional craft for many years to come.

Started in 2003, USA Kilts is a team of kilt makers and artisans located in Spring City PA. In 2017, we made it our mission to build community and bring kilts and Celtic culture to the forefront with our YT show: Kilts & Culture.

It's heartening to see Barbara making the intricate art of kilt-making accessible to enthusiasts worldwide. We're particularly delighted to hear about her efforts to document and preserve the techniques her teacher passed down, as we can't let these traditions die out.
Wonderful interview. Thanks for doing this and sharing the words of wisdom from Barb. I am honored to have two of Barb's hand sewn kilts. True treasures.
I ordered the book about a month ago, after seeing several Rocky mentioning it in several videos. I haven’t gone through it in detail yet, but the coverage seems in depth. Another supplementary is a CZcamsr in Australia that makes kilts entirely with hand stitching - he has a series of step by step to make a traditional 5 yard kilt.
Thank you so much for this interview with Barbara- I really enjoyed it a lot.
I've attended many of Barbs Kilt Kamps and each year I'd learn something different. Barb is the consummate instructor, but there's so much more to her classes that it's hard to stay away. Covid shut things down for a few years and I don't know if she'll start them up again, but what an education!!! If you ever wanted to learn how to make a traditional kilt, Barb's book is the way to go! If you're a piper, drummer, or highland dancer, then you should seriously consider it. Oh yeah, and the friendships you make are bar none, some of the best in the world!!!
I’ve had her book since the very beginning when she first published, but never was able to make it to a kamp. I wish she’d do a few more so I could attend one.
I really enjoyed attending one of her Kilt Kamps. Wonderful teacher.
Listened to this while sewing my first kilt! It's a need work nightmare and probably wouldn’t gotten me whipped as an apprentice but it's mine and I'm never going to pick it apart!
This was the interview I have been waiting for. Great questions, Rocky, and kudos to your media team for putting this together so well.
I made my first kilt after reading The Art of Kilt Making. Now I have two bandmates that have asked me to make kilts for them. Barb is very detailed in her instructions which makes them very easy to follow. Great interview, and love the modified Lunar tartan.
A great interview with Barbara Tewksbury, I really enjoyed and found it quite insightful and enlightening.
I want that lunar tartan! 😊
I really enjoyed watching this video. What a great interview! I just ordered Ms. Tewksbury's book and plan to shop for tartan in NYC next week. Thank you for bringing Scottish heritage closer to home and helping to make the traditions of kilt-making and wearing more accessible!
I very much enjoyed seeing this segment and hearing all she had to say about not kilts but about being passionate about something. I have an appreciation for the work that goes into kilt making and I would want to read her book. Thank you for bringing her onto the channel. Slainte’
Thank you so much for this talk.
I've machine stitched my first kilt 8 years ago, it was... Interesting.
I hand stitched two this year and I enjoyed it so much, still have to refine my kraft though.
I bought this book to educate myself before I contacted you guys to make my kilt. I found her book so interesting and easy to read, and I learned so much about tartans and construction. It was very interesting to hear how she came to write this book and indeed how to make kilts. Thanks for this very good series of interviews with her.
Sold. Will be ordered shortly. Not only have I wanted to pick up sewing again, and to be motivated to do so I've really needed something I'm passionate about making, but I also now have a 9 month old daughter and would love to make her some kilts as she grows.
Been meaning to order that book for years. Just ordered! Can't wait for it to arrive.
Wonderful interview. An amazing woman. Don't think I'll ever hand sew a kilt, but may buy her book. I have watched several videos by a Bespoke kiltmaker, I do not have the patience to make one by hand. I really liked her version of the Lunar tartan - beautiful.
I did not know this book existed. Bought it on amazon less than three minutes into the video.
Fascinating!
Great for Ellie in space, pod cast!!! Kindness is always free, The Highlander!
Great interview and video.👍
Love the book
I'm making a kilt right now!
Great interview! Thanks for the effort, guys!
Just a little question... which were the books that Professor Tewksbury mentioned in the beginning of the video?
Does wear6your kilt on long trips, do you think that sitting on the kilt for 3 or 4 or more hours... does that have a bad effect on the pleats? Or should I try to not put it on until I arrive to the event that I plan on wearing my kilt?
+USAKiltsOfficial *Thanks for the summary of a biography.* Ms. Tewksbury got the Scots' _galór_ - earned _Philosophiae Doctrix_ in Geology from University of Colorado, Boulder, CO, USA.
I'd like to get a copy of Barbara J. Tewksbury Ph.D. and Elsie Stühmeyer, _The Art Of Kiltmaking: Step-By-Step Instructions for Making a Traditional Scottish Kilt: With Photograms by Dave Tewksbury_ (2001, 2nd edition; Rome, NY, USA: Celtic Dragon Press, 2008). I've a hunch that my eventual wife should be gifted a maxi-kilt consistent with the USA KiltsⓇ Celtic Cottagecore Collection, albeit in 11Z plain off-white worsted wool rather than a universal Tartan: A heavy-duty waist liner of nylon/cotton (in fact, consistent with an UNCLE MIKE'SⓇ Professionalᵀᴹ Inner Duty Belt), sail-rated thread, and leather straps with stainless-steel buckles are necessities.
Can anyone say the approximate cost for Barb to make a Kilt for someone?
Could you tell us about your co author Elsie Stuemeier
Good day
