We are Heather, Bradey, Alexa and Chloe. We purchased an abandoned stone barn in the foothills of the Italian Alps and we are working together as a family to renovate and restore this old stone barn into our dream home.

OMG! I thought after all the work you´ve made in the foundations etc, you were almost ready to start turning the "barn" into a house, but with this new project everything changes. I think , besides de water problem, it will help you have a better floor plan, and more light. I will sure follow this new adventure! 💪

Since you asked, I think it is totally exciting for your family! The plan seems necessary to make the place livable and probably a more healthful environment. From experience, I know it is “major” to have found a construction company to work with.
The island looks like a wonderful place to visit. The tourist best kept secret is out now!

The children have learning curves in every direction possible. It’s great that they can come and go so as not to “homestead like glue” and expand the children’s horizons.

We had to do this too behind our house, we had the mountain right behind. My husband had an engineer design it, so my husband had to build a very big footer and then a large wall. I suggest you do it right and not just put a wall behind but a proper retaining wall. My point is don’t just hired a contractor without plan! Lots of work but worth it!

I have a sump pump french drain system. It's great for my situation, where the region has flooded 3 times in the last 30 years. It turns on frequently in April when we get alot of rain and the water table rises, but we are only actually in danger of having water on our basement floor when the watertable is high enough that the news is reporting that towns around us are evacuating due to rising water. But yes with your situation of constant water concerns, it would be a bandaid, very helpful but not a cure. and the pumps are very loud, we have 3 of them and we can hear which one is going off no matter where we are in the house and the one in the basement below our bedroom shakes the bed when it's running. Your solution to this problem, sounds scary but so worth it! Best wishes.

That is indeed a massive addition to the stone house, and it's neat that it will be invisible from the outside. If I'm reading that plan right, you're adding several approximately 4 meter by 3 meter spaces out the back, which means your addition is probably about the same size as our whole apartment here in Seoul! It definitely expands the option to entertain.
I assume you'll be doing your water redirection around the addition at the back so you don't just swap the water infiltration problem to a new set of rooms, but if you're covering the roof of the new space with dirt and grass, doesn't that pose some leak risk as well? Is there a plan to manage that which just doesn't show up on the floorplan because it's overhead? Will the stone walls of the original house still be thick enough to maintain their structure once they're no longer being supported by the mountain?
Overall it's a very exciting development, and I look forward to seeing what you do with all that stone! You're basically building a mini quarry for this.

The extension makes sense. To bring light into that area you could install light wells or skylights. And definitely think about installing a heat pump. The extra stone could be used to make a garage to the side of the house as you say there will be many uses for the stone you dig out free building material.

Wow! I am very curious about your project. We have a similar situation, although much easier. We live in the Sabinian hills (not mountains) and the water flows in our kitchen from the hill. Everybody told us it would be very expensive to dig down if it was possible at all. I wish you all the best and a lot of patience because in Italy everything takes longer as planned. The norther you are, the faster it may be, but there are also the weather conditions. If the earth is wet, you can´t start digging. We have been here for 3 years now, and every year we have come a little step further. Regards from Lazio, Andrea

Lovely running into you and the family this evening. We went to the Ping River busy, busy. A suggestion for the most relaxing cafe ever and for the girls, there are a dozen Dachshunds, two Great Danes, two elephants (which you can feed are are very gentle) a few buffalo all living at the cafe by a River. A lovely place to relax. it's a 40-minute drive but well worth it. Elely Cafe’ แอลลี่ คาเฟ่.

Wow! I thought from day one that you were going to get water and mud sliding down the mountain onto your house. So, an essential and exciting extension that will make it a proper home and hopefully deal with the problems of building on a hillside. I look forward to lots more interesting videos. I hope the money does not run out. Clearly you will have costed all this.

By the way, this is their dream and project. We are lucky they share it with us arm chair observers. If you don’t like if anymore, go somewhere else. Better yet, you move to another country and make your own project and let us watch and criticize your dream. If they want our suggestions, or our votes, they will ask us. Right now they consult with experts, not us, the arm chair critics, 😆.

Are you American? Most Americans have no patience: they want to have everything right away, the bigger the better, no matter the quality, and they don't build anything durable. They have no love for the houses they live in (that are mostly glorified shacks made with flimsy materials and destined to be torn down in a matter of decades).

My aunt had to excavate her entire foundation and coat the walls with a tar solution for water proofing. It worked well. The foundation is dry.

Your ideas sound great. I just wonder why you wouldn’t expand to the second story. At least find away to leave the new area exposed. Think how beautiful it would be to put sun lights or windows and lighten all that dark space. It could be storage or your homeschooling room, an indoor atrium or even a dreamy main bedroom. It could also have a second staircase to upstairs rooms. Anyway, best of luck on your project. It’s a beautiful place!
