THIS is how you tune an IEM! Hisenior Mega5-EST REVIEW

  • When an IEM builds up hype over the course of half a year, you know there's something something. And the Hisenior Mega5-EST -- let's call it the MegaFEST -- has done that on the strength of tuning I can only describe as top-tier. After weeks of listening to the MegaFEST and comparing it with IEMs like the new Crinacle Dusk, do I think it's worth the hype? Let's talk about it.

    Glad to hear the M5est comparison since after the Dusk was such a massive jump from the B2 Dusk I was interested, but the bass is so phenomenal that I'm not interested in compromising on that. It's like 4dB or even more below my preference, but so deep, dynamic and textured that it's a real wow factor for me.

    I have these and I would sum up the tuning like this:
    Mids are laid back as there’s a constant bass emphasis that provides presence at basically all times, but it interferes with the midrange. You need to crank the sound a bit relative to some other IEMs to bring the vocals to a proper level and make the music come alive. The highs are smooth and inoffensive.
    These IEMs have a pretty wide nozzle, so be aware of that. For me, it’s not painful, but I can feel it and it doesn’t disappear like on some others. The shape of the IEM shell is very comfortable for me.
    The stock cable is very easy to live with. It doesn’t pull too hard on your ears, it isn’t stiff, and okay looking. It’s not a tight twist so there are some inconsistencies to its construction which draw attention to it (for me), but otherwise it’s a very nice cable. Wish it were modular.
    This set takes to EQ really, really well. In fact, there’s a setting on Qudelix in the Auto EQ that fixed everything I didn’t like.

      This IEM is Tip and source sensitive and must be used with wide bore tips. It doesn't like too much power. I use low gain, balanced DX240 AMP8 MKII. Bass doesn't go into the mids with the right tips.

    Great review, as always Mark. really happy you got your hands on the set and did this review. The timing couldn't be better. On my set I had to do a lot of tip rolling to get them just right. I ended up using the Divinus Velvet tips in ML.
    A few things. Hisenior does have a very nice interchangeable cable (comes standard on the Okavango), that I'm certain they would swap out at no cost. They also do custom 3.5mm on the white whale. Not sure if they charge for that? They also have a bunch of custom shells you can order for the Mega5EST and you can get them in Custom fit as well by supplying a 3D scan of your ears or your ear molds. They do a lot of musician customs.
    As for the Dusk, I'm hoping to make it your way next month and perhaps over that coffee I can have a listen and A/B it to see what you're talking about with regards to the tuning.

    • @SuperReview
      @SuperReview  Před 2 měsíci +2

      I prefer non swappable as well. Some are done really well though. The GM upgrade cable is excellent. They screw in and you can’t tell. The SA6 MK2 cable locks as well. But I get what you mean.

    I have the mega5est, for me (with the right tips) it's perfect. The impact is on point and and the treble is not too sharp yet still resolving. I've demoed the dusk, I find it too harsh, I'm a tad treble sensitive, so take that as you will. As a side note, the mega5est is oddly tip sensitivity unsure on what is causing that, but it's the best IEM I've heard to date. Not to mention that it EQ's very well, for those looking for that extra little spice, EQ can get that.

    how do custom molded monitors compare to the universal counterparts?
    if these monitors are very tip sensitive, would a custom option eliminate that problem, or is it better to have the option to tip roll the sound to taste?

    • @SuperReview
      @SuperReview  Před 2 měsíci +1

      I personally don't bother with custom earphones, it's too difficult to predict how they will sound after being built, too much going back and forth on adjusting the mold, etc. Unless you're performing on stage and you need the stability, IMO not worth it.

    I think people have to note that the Mega5-EST actually graphs quite similar to the Mest Mk2 until the upper mids and treble although they both are on the more recessed side. The Mest Mk2 are my endgame IEM along with many others and I think that those who are looking for something similarly tonally to the Mest Mk2 with a tad more vocal clarity, the Mega5-EST.

    Yeah, I run my Dunu sa6 mk2 balanced on spring tips, and I haven't run into a single iEM that can justify its price to performance over it. $1000-$2000 iem all have been sold and my Sa6 Mk2 is my choice every time. So rich, sparkly, impacful, and very easy to drive at low volumes while still sounding clear and dynamic. I was able to even pick my faceplate I wanted for the Dunu, something that they don't normally do and got it tax-free with 2-day delivery for under $500 brand new direcrly from Dunu. If there is new competition in this price range now, im still not hearing anything from this review to prove it's worth it. Sounds like they exchange impact and dynamics for mid range focus, and that's not enough to make me run out and spend $500. But great review nonetheless.

    Canon 2 grows on you, right? The vocals are so textured, so pure, that I prefer the switches in down/down to that I can focus on those mids. i'm using Penon Liqueur Orange tips. Oh, I also eq the mids down 2db at 2k... I think I'm growing to appreciate a relaxed pinna gain.

    • @SuperReview
      @SuperReview  Před 2 měsíci

      Maybe surprisingly, the N3's bass is not great -- the treble is the best part of the N3 IMO. I haven't heard them back to back so not sure how they'd compare directly in treble, but definitely Canon bass is better.

    • @haomingli6175
      @haomingli6175 Před 2 měsíci

      @@SuperReview not surprising, because bass performance is not just dependent on the bass amount or the shape of the curve in the bass region. if the upper frequencies are kept the same, the higher the bass level, the slower the bass transients and the more blurry the bass texture.
      and relatedly i feel some eartips seem to not seal as well as others and they make N3's bass better, simply by making the bass level lower.

    I can't see spending that amount of money considering the performance of the Hidizs MP-145 (US$120), ARTTI T-10 ($50), or even the CCA Rhapsody ($35); at their resp. AliEx sale price points. Maybe if the IEM was built with precious metals or genuine jewels would I accept such pricing.
    I have a colleague who dumped $4000 on custom IEM's about 5 years ago...makes me laugh. That investment didn't age well.

This cable is balanced, OK then use a nice DAC/AMP or a DAP or, a desktop amp which accepts this termination and enjoy the IEM for goodness’s sake! Or replace this perfectly fine cable with a single-ended one and do not make that much fuss about the damn termination! Move on already: do not mention this in every video of yours! Great review, as usual. Thumbs up.
