Racist Things People from the Northeast are Tired of Hearing | The Quint

People from the #Northeast who live in cities in mainland India are at the receiving end of racism almost every single day. They are taunted, laughed at, called names for their looks, dressing sense and eating habit. They are perceived as outsiders, not Indians.
It is this ‘othering’ that the new Bollywood film ‘Axone’ tackles.

I'm so sorry for what you guys face on a regular basis..there are endless divisions within this country;caste, religion, colour, appearance etc it just never goes away. Most of the blame I think goes to our upbringing and education, we aren't taught enough about the diverse cultures and their history across our country, there's lack of representation and only one culture is forced upon the majority. I hope the new generation turns out saner and open minded

Racism of any kind should be stopped. If you discriminate remember it leaves a bitter taste in the mouth of the one being discriminated. Leading to more hatred Which will be evident when your children move out of your state to study outside. Tribals should not call non tribals “haring”,”aaying”, “nipak” etc and moreover stop being racist among one another’s tribe.

To face Racism is not easy, it can literally drain you and makes you question your own identity. When I was in Bangalore ( many years back) I too faced racism... imagine I was new to the city and people and they didn't believe that I'm an Indian just because I was born in Nepali family. Every time and and to everyone I had to explain that my forefathers were born and bought up in Darjeeling which is a very beautiful part of India. They used to say that we are refugees or few of them even said go back to your country Nepal. I've no one in Nepal so how can me and my family go there, leaving our home, land and property. Now I'm working in Qatar again few people from none other than my country ask me not to speak in my language (Nepali). They say if I speak in Nepali then I should go to Nepal. Now I realize how bumbass people can be and still so proud of their backgrounds and education. What's the use of such education when you cannot except your own county people? Those people in Gorkha regiment who fought and still are fight for the nation are considered as the pride of our nation and on the other hand same people and their family is not been completely excepted by the country people. Such a shame.

@Kabir Asthana so this is something i have discussed with my friends from the northeast. 2 of my closest friends are from Arunachal pradesh. And i have noticed that there are couple of factors that contribute to the alienation of the people from NE. One of the biggest reason is that the people of northeast hear about the terrible behaviour towards their people by the other "mainland Indians" hence they naturally assume that we are all like that especially if they have not got their education outside the northeastern states. I hear pretty horrible stories from my friends which they face almost everyday and personally it is very heartbreaking to see them going through all that. I see what they go through upclose and i must say that apart from the northeastern states they really do not feel safe in any other part of the country and thats just sad. 😐

Yeah i totally agree that we should try to learn the language and the culture of the place where we are residing in as we pursue our career . Learning a person's language or trying to understand their tradition is one of the first steps in breaking this barrier of racism and stereotypes.
Sadly, sometimes we tend to be very aloof, which also stands true for when we see another NE person staying with us in that very same place, heck even students from my own state . Irony at it's finest.
Some sort of , you know, egoistic tendency rises, or maybe it's just me.
But all in all, the state of west bengal has given me so much love and support and food, lemme just say, the food is fantastic!!
I have met amazing people who helped me through a lot of troubles and also guided me when i got lost in bazaars.
But i did face a fare share of racism with being called " chinese food " to " corona virus"😂
But the good people make up for all the bad i have faced till now and this was possible because i tried to make an effort because i felt that I as an entity somehow represented my beautiful state of sikkim . So...this rant has been going on tooo long, notsure if anyone read it but....just saying, a smile and a hello goes a long way.

Coz I know this land belongs to me and there are millions of good Indians who know who I am.. So don't worry sister.. We all are with you.... Come to Tamizh nadu, Bangalore or Kerala, you will be treated very well for what you are...
