    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    Greta (Catherine McCormack) needs to be calmed down because Schreck (Willem Dafoe) casts no shadow.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    The torturous production of the classic 1922 vampire film Nosferatu is recreated in this stylized account of director F.W. Murnau and his obsession with creating realistic horror by any means necessary -- even if those means include actual bloodletting. The film begins as Murnau (John Malkovich) is ready to take his unauthorized interpretation of the Bram Stoker tale on location in Czechoslovakia. There, the director has arranged for his cast and crew to live in the same castle in which they will shoot their parts, as they all wait for their co-star, Max Schreck (Willem Dafoe) -- Murnau's choice to play Count Orlok -- to arrive. Their leader has warned them that Schreck is a student of the Stanislovsky method of performance and will not respond to them out-of-character. Nothing, however, can prepare them for the real thing: when the actor arrives, he's already in full Gothic regalia, asserting that he is indeed a vampire. Schreck makes good on his claims by terrorizing the cast and crew, attacking Murnau's original cinematographer (Wolfgang Muller) and plucking bats out of the air for midnight snacks. Director E. Elias Merhige previously made his name with his experimental theater productions and with his horrific film school thesis, Begotten.

    This is why Count Orlok tells Murnau that he and Orlok are not so different. Orlok feasts on living blood to maintain eternal life, to achieve immortality. Murnau is also willing to sacrifice anyone, even his entire film crew and staff, in order to achieve immortality. They both have this insatiable hunger that saps away their humanity.

    I have a theory that Schreck desired Greta (not only because she's beautiful) but she resembled the mystery woman vampire who turned him, (he mentions ealier in the film) and that abandoned him. He tried to remember what she looked like; he painted a picture of her, then carved a bust of her out of wood, then he made a marble statue, but they all desecrated with age, as he did. She broke his heart and cursed him forever. So his attraction to Greta made him remember that woman vampire, he was both lustful for her, but more than happy to kill her too, (sort of having revenge, in a sense). Just a theory. (Like how Dracula goes after Mina, because Mina resembled or was a reincarnation of his love)

      In the script, there's a deleted subplot where it's revealed the vampire who created Schreck is, ironically, the cabaret dancer currently involved with Murnau who inspired him to make "Dracula" (and does she have some opinions when she finds out Schreck is the one playing Dracula). I don't remember if it's explicitly stated or not, but the dancer and Greta do share some descriptive similarities.

    How incredibly insulting is this movie to the audience? They expect you to believe no one read the script the director holds in his hands prior? That he has to spell out everything, in the most obvious manner, every step of the way? That until this very moment they don't know why they are there, what they are doing, what they are saying? Secondly, anyone with even a passing knowledge of film history knows ALL scenes in that era were shot outdoors -- including interiors -- because the film stock was poor and they hadn't invested film lights yet. Had they really filmed this scene like this, the result would be an all-black image. The director is saying, "Ready?" while shoes are being put on the actress. And then...we're to believe the director would administer drugs while crew members hold the actress down? Come on. What's the motivation? DeFoe's acting is absurdly bad, given nothing to do but breathe heavily and spasm with the fake nails. It's all too cartoonish, to contrived, too divorced from reality to be taken seriously for true horror/suspense. It's actually funny and not in a good way. Everyone involved should be embarrassed. F -

      Eh I mean the admistration of drugs to actors actually wouldn't be all too far fetched for the era

    • @andmillions
      @andmillions Před měsícem

      That was the point, tho. They were trying to sacrifice her to him and then kill him. If you watch the film, he's a vampire that desires Greta's blood. (The actress on the bed). So they drug her to calm her down so the scene can be filmed. And yes it's a movie at the end of the day, not everything is gonna be 100% historically accurate.
