- Mark Pope and Kentucky basketball could run the platoon this season... but should they?
On today's episode of Locked On Kentucky, Lance Dawe discusses the Kentucky Wildcats' depth, the 2014-15 team's platoon system, and how Coach Pope and the Cats could replicate some things that team did with their rotations.
Kentucky basketball is extremely deep this season - Lamont Butler, Kerr Kriisa, Jaxson Robinson, Andrew Carr, Otega Oweh, Amari Williams, Brandon Garrison, and more - and could have one of the deepest, most-balanced teams in college basketball. But what makes them different from that John Calipari-led team that featured Devin Booker, the Harrison twins, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Willie Cauley-Stein?

Love to see them implement a full court press similar to Pitino early days
There are enough guys to do it, enough guys to break down other teams
That type of defense doesn't work these days
@@GrantTodd-eh7ub It worked for Pope last year at BYU.
Hey all…BTW….Pitino did “platooning “ way before Cal did it…it was not uncommon for him to become frustrated with the starting squad, them just pull them all and put in the bench…maybe a little different than Cal’s version, but he usually made it very effective by lighting a fire on those starters while wearing down the opponent’s.
Pope's BYU team last year had a dizzying amount of subbing. It sometimes was hard to keep track of who was in. Blink and you'd miss a substitution.
The 96 team had a 10 man rotation not a platoon and that worked out pretty well
Your right, Cal just wasn't an Xs and Os guy, he had a guy for that.
@@indigomarine91untill he didn’t
I don’t think we need to platoon necessarily. I hope to see a lot of players rotating in and out during the early season though. We need to test SEVERAL lineups and see how different groups perform. We’ve got enough depth to ride the hot hand most nights. Definitely easier to go 100% all night when you have 10-12 guys in the rotation.
Agree with Daniel the key will be who can close out games and play solid defense. It will be a very difficult season because the SEC is loaded. I believe we will win about 19 games and it is going to be hard to make the NCAA tournament.
A good game coach that knows how to substitute doesn't need to platoon.
Hey Lance, new to the program- loving it! Question for you: Looks like social media team and staff are really pushing Kerr Kriisa to the fan base. But, nobody seems to think he will be a starter, or major contributor (behind other solid guards). Is there a chance he is a higher level player for the Cats this year and nobody is expecting it but Pope?
he had an off year at WVA last season. Before last year, he was the #4 rated portal player when he left AZ. I am hopeful he bounces back in a better environment this season. WVA was an absolute train wreck
Kentucky basketball next year is a giant question mark. Everything im seeing by looking at these kids previous stats is one giant unknown and what "could be".
Think of it this way. Coach popes team last year beat some good teens in Kansas and Baylor. They were a slouch of a team. And this year's team is a lot better roster than he had last year. Now think of kentucky's defense that they had last year compared to what their defense can be next year, with some of these players. It's not often a team.Has this many fifth year seniors with that experience I think we'll be alright
I'm a 50 year old lifetime fan and resident of Kentucky. The whole weird reaction to platoon is all Calipari propaganda. The one season UK used platoon, they lost only one game. The one game they lost was because Cal didn't platoon. Cal made platoon a negative word purposely. He didn't want to concentrate on that many players during the season. Cal likes having 3 or 4 high profile guys and keeps giving them opportunities all year, despite how good other players on the team are. This happened this season with DJ and Edwards. It was clear by December that two guys on the bench were way better, but Cal would rather improve a players draft status over winning.
Pitino could play every player on the team and it was because, they were all able to play defense and offense.
He’s the Coach
I think there will be alot at film going into each game
No reason to. I’m not sure we’re gonna care who starts by the end of the year. It’s going to be who closes games. Defensive and Offensive lineup.
96 team would blow you out early and would keep pounding on the other teams.
I don't like Platoon, If someone gets hurt or sick it throws everyone off. Sure fresh legs is amazing but I like the Idea of sub outs being player based not rotation based. This Keeps Hot hands in the game until that player needs a break.
they won't platoon. But there will be a lot of subbing.
Poor ky just can't shake cal!😂 platoon? 😂
UK head 🗣️ coach Mark Pope is not doing a platoon system.
So many Kentucky fans in here with the dumbest anti platoon comments. Saying it only because they heard others say it. Others who said it strictly because they didn't want to upset Cal. Platoon works! It's been proven morons! 38-1 with platoon! 1 loss because UK didn't platoon! Stop thinking like Cal!
I think they need try it they got alot good players why set them and not have alot mins ? Dont be like cal lol. Lets go big blue xoxox BBN 💪😺💙🤍🔥🔥🏀💯UK
