  • Fall in love with Julie Christie, like Alan Bates, Peter Finch and all her farm workers. This brings a tear to the eye in the same way that bagpipes send a tingle down the spine.

    I first saw Far From The Madding Crowd when I was 12 yrs old..& it had such a HUGE & LASTING impact on me! It was where I first discovered Julie Christie..Alan Bates.. Peter Finch..& Terrence Stamp ..with Julie Christie becoming one of my all-time favorite actresses. It also was where I first discovered Thomas Hardy..who has been my all-time favorite author. And it also was where I first discovered the BEAUTIFUL Old English countryside..Old English folk music..& the Old English way of life that was portrayed in the film..all of which I have dreamed about & loved throughout my entire life! It’s amazing that a film could leave such a CAPTIVATING & LASTING impression on someone at such a young age. But that film has left a life-long impression on me that has never faded away!!!

      There was a written account of it in London in 1689,but it was mostly collected from the South of England where the Nightingales were found,hence it’s called ‘the nightingale’(or sometimes ‘the bold grenadier’)!

    @SirBounder Thomas Hardy is a brilliant writer. He is lyrical,with a deep sympathy for the countryside and its characters, the time, and in creating atmosphere. It's a story about the complications of love and the decisions people make in their lives and the consequences but there's so much more to enjoy in every detail of it, the scenery, and all the characters. I suppose shallow sensibilites attuned to heavily plotted action thrillers wouldn't appreciate it, but there are stil plenty who do.

    The love angle is similar to Ryan's Daughter. In Madding Crowd Bathsheba Everdene consumes the adoration of three competing lovers and it can only end in tragedy. In Ryan's Daughter three men are besotted with Rosie (Sarah Miles) - the village school teacher (Robert Mitchum), the village priest (Trevor Howard) and the British soldier (Christopher Jones) and it can only end in tragedy also. BTW the link between Julie Christie and Sarah Miles is David Lean . . .

    • @heliotropezzz333
      @heliotropezzz333 Před 10 lety +5

    This is in reply to a comment you made two years ago, but I have to say I agree with you. I listened to Isla Cameron's version and it is quite different from this version. I also agree that this singing voice is such a close match to Julie Christie's speaking voice that it likely is Julie singing here. I'm going to see if I can find her singing anything else, just because I'm so impressed with the way she sings this. She almost has too much talent and beauty for one human being!

We can discover things by being exposed to them through education and it stretches people. We can learn to appreciate and like new things - though it does not work for everyone.
