I used this knot at a more formal party a couple of years ago and it really makes you stand out and people are going to ask you how you did it. Personally I love this knot and wear at when I don't need to be serious or want to have some fun at a party.

Why is it "unless you're a rock star" to wear certain things (like stonewashed jeans for example)? Am I to understand it as rock stars are already well liked so they can dress poorly, or you need to have a certain charismatic personality to pull of exuberant styles?
I'd say it's very very subjective.. surely you can wear what you want, but you'll want it to be "in line" with your character somehow... otherwise it's come off as pretentious.. but go ahead and wear what you think is nice, that's what counts. That's what I do ..
