Streak-Free Furniture Painting || Valspar Cabinet & Furniture Oil Enriched Enamel Paint

  • Black painted furniture is highly desired today. But it's nearly impossible to eliminate that annoying, streaky finish when applying the protective topcoat. Valspar Cabinet & Furniture Oil Enriched Enamel Paint is a water-based paint that claims to offer the protection of an oil-based paint without the need to topcoat. Is that true?
    I also put to test the "brush on, roll off" method touted by Shannon at Black Sheep House. Does her method work to create a smooth, brushstroke-free finish?

I did a scratch test weeks later and some of the paint did scratch off. Boo!!!!!! I sealed it with poly. I will definitely keep using this paint because I love the texture of it as I brush it on. But I will topcoat it. In my most recent tutorial Im about to post I sprayed it on and I didn’t get the same smooth finish when it dried as I did when I hand-painted it. Isn’t that interesting?

    I'm enjoying your channel and Shannon's as well. I will give this paint a try, I usually use Fusion and General Finishes but I think this is more economical with great results, plus they can mix whatever color desired. Dry time for recoat is a bit longer, but that might be okay.

    • @tableflippinghousewife
      @tableflippinghousewife  Před rokem +1

      Thank you! Yes, definitely give it a try. I did this piece a year ago. While I have continued to use it, I have found that it DOES, in fact, need a topcoat for darker colors. Otherwise, you leave dusty looking fingerprints on the painted surface every time you touch it.

    I like the fact that she more or less does this as a "one off", revealing the trial and error issues that we all run into. I noted that she repaired some of the drawer corners also (with the same putty?). I would have liked to know how she did this.

    • @tableflippinghousewife
      @tableflippinghousewife  Před rokem

      It’s been a while since I did that dresser. I know that I used wood glue to reattach that corner piece that was broken off. And then I think I filled the crevices, which were very small, with Durham Water putty.

    I’m going to try the your same paint as I have a piece similar to yours to paint. What finish did you use for the Valspar? I see it comes in flat, satin and semi-gloss?
    Thank you!!

    • @tableflippinghousewife
      @tableflippinghousewife  Před rokem +1

      Hi Karen, thank you! I use the satin finish. It actually has a bit more of a sheen than other paints. My personal experience is that when I paint a dark color like SW’s Caviar (black), I leave what looks like dusty fingerprints on the piece unless I use a topcoat. Other people who use it have not indicated that’s an issue for them. Let me know what you think of the paint. It’s such a nice paint to use with both a brush and a sprayer.

    Beautiful end result. So in your opinion, at the end of 3 weeks, do you feel the hyped durability is there? I know it is hard to say without doing a discreet scrape test somewhere lol, but did you feel comfortable selling it without a topcoat? New subbie. Oh and I noticed you had a few orbs floating around, at 9:36 one is on your shoulder. You have a friend keeping you company!

      Thank you for your kind feedback - and for asking about a scrape test. I just tested three areas with my fingernail as well as a screwdriver, and the paint did NOT hold. Eek! This is the one and only piece I haven't been able to sell, despite marking it down twice, which I thought was so peculiar. Now I realize that was by design because now I have the opportunity to properly seal it. And yes, I did notice what you're calling orbs. I wondered the same thing.

      @@cking2002 I’ve use this paint many times since that original project. I now add polyurethane to my last coat of paint just to give the piece some added protection while the paint cures. I also often prime depending on the finish I’m painting over. I’ve had no issues with it scratching since then.

    Would this be a good paint for a kitchen table or is there a better paint to use for a table that will get wiped down a lot?

    • @tableflippinghousewife
      @tableflippinghousewife  Před rokem +2

      Yes, this would be a great paint for your kitchen table top. However, even though it has a built-in topcoat, I would still recommend that you apply a good topcoat to at least the table top for durability. I’d suggest Dixie Belles Gator Hide or polyurethane. Several coats of the water based poly would work (the oil based would add even better) to protect the surface from water and food stains as well as wear and tear.

    Beautiful! What color black did you tint it?

    • @tableflippinghousewife
      @tableflippinghousewife  Před 2 lety +2

      Thank you Jordan! The color is Caviar. Apparently two different companies have a black called Caviar so look at the paint chips of both to see what you prefer. If I can remember correctly, they were very similar. I waited a month before posting it for sale to allow the paint to fully cure. However, when I did a scratch test in two different areas, the paint did scratch. Boo! So I gave the piece two coats of poly. I continue to use this paint, though, because it's so nice to brush on, but I mix poly into the paint for the last coat of color and I spray a coat poly on as well.

  • @RachelE15
    @RachelE15 Před 2 lety

    i know you also mentioned a top coat? i have this same exact brand and I'm painting my cabinets, off white with a semi-gloss finish. which topcoat should i use?

    • @tableflippinghousewife
      @tableflippinghousewife  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Rachel. This was the first time that I used this paint. I did a scratch test on one of the legs after four weeks and a little scratched off. Eek! So I brushed Varathane's Polyurethane in Clear Satin over the painted surfaces. (FYI - I have since switched to using the Matte Finish. It has less of a sheen which I prefer). I continue to use this paint at times but now I add the poly to the paint when I spray or brush my last coat of paint; roughly a 2 parts paint to one part poly. I feel it gives the piece the extra protection it needs. Technically you shouldn't have to topcoat. My first application may have been using error. But since I resell my pieces, I always topcoat everything to some degree. Let me know how your piece turns out.

    Can I ask a crazy question?? Do you know what base they mixed your Caviar into? My Caviar was mixed in a base 4 and it looks charcoal on my furniture- not rich black like yours.. and I used the Valspar Cabinet and Furniture paint

    • @tableflippinghousewife
      @tableflippinghousewife  Před 2 lety

      Mine is also mixed in a Base 4. How many coats do you have on it and has it fully dried? Because I remember thinking it looked like a dark charcoal as I was painting it but it dried black.

    • @tableflippinghousewife
      @tableflippinghousewife  Před 2 lety +1

      I owe you an apology! I went to get more of this paint from Lowe’s and they pointed out to me that both Valspar and Sherwin-Williams have Caviar and it was the Sherwyn Williams version of Caviar that they had mixed up for me. It’s SW6990. I am so sorry. I remember when I requested it the first time based on Shannon’s (Black Sheep House) video, I told him I wanted black. They must’ve figured out that what I needed was the Sherwin-Williams version. I apologize!

    • @sarahgendernalik885
      @sarahgendernalik885 Před 2 lety

      No need to apologize! I ended up finding another black in the Valspar furniture paint that looks great.
      However! I have painted three coats of Valspar black, plus 2 coats of 50/50 Varathane poly and Valspar mixed over the past 5 days- and when I gently put the drawers in this morning, it nicked the paint super easily! Much easier than latex or Annie Sloan chalk paint. Have you found this Valspar paint to be easily chipped?!? I’ve spent days and. Lots of money on painting and entire bedroom set- just to have it chip immediately?!? What am I doing wrong??

    • @tableflippinghousewife
      @tableflippinghousewife  Před 2 lety +1

      @@sarahgendernalik885 with Valspar Cabinet and Furniture paint? No I definitely haven’t but I did have that happen with another brand of latex paint (can’t remember which one). It’s VERY frustrating. My paint wasn’t chipping but it was peeling away where there was friction. I did a video about it. I discovered that the drawers were rubbing against the frame of the dresser as I was pulling them in and out. I had to sand the sides and in some cases the bottoms of some of the drawers to create a clearance. Also, check the back of the can of paint to see if you allowed the correct amount of dry time between coats of paint and top coat. I presume you prepped the pieces (cleaned, scuff sanded etc), yes?
