    Good morning. I felt a kindred spirit in Barbara as too love putting everything in order. I'm looking forward into diving some of her books. Nothing better than combining my love of quilting and history. Enjoy.

    This was a fantastic interview. I have the "Civil War Preproduction Quilts" plus purchased many of her fabrics for making a Soldiers Cot Quilt. It's the only quilt top I've ever completed. Super easy cutting, fitting and stitching. A great beginners quilt. Thank you for bringing Ms. Brachman on your show.

    I have a copy of Barbara Brackman's Civil War Quilts and was lucky enough to take a class from Terry Clothier Thompson who produced some of the contemporary versions of the quilts that Barbara included in the book. What a fabulous experience that was. Terry was a speaker for our quilt guild here in northern California. She then put on a civil war quilt class for us and only eight people signed up. So, the eight of us got the most wonderful amount of attention and information from her. I'll never forget it.

    I loved this interview, especially since I live close to the town we're Barbara Brackman lives and the owner of my local quilt store told me she had dementia and was in a "home". Can you believe it? She said people on her team still make her fabric. Nice to see her alive!!

    I love this interview! I have a quilt that my Grandmother started around the 70's that is what you just described as a feedsack! Its been handed down unfinished to daughters and now a granddaughter (me), and I finished it in 2020. Its amazing and everytime a relative comes over, they have to sleep under it to add to the memory of my grandmother. Thank you for your wonderful work! I can't wait to buy the book!

    Oh My How fun was this. Found it a few weeks ago, but just had the proper time to listen and see a great humorous lady of the times. I was not a fan of "civil war" style fabrics until recently, I've also, just reverted to finding more 1930 s prints. I will say I have been piecing quilt tops for 29 years and @72, my fabrics are changing in value as well as style. LOVE this interview. Thanks Karen.

  • @maureenhughes-phillips3432

    Thanks for the interview. Barbara is wonderful and I read both her blogs which are full of history and information. I love her fabrics and before her Civil War Sampler block book I had never heard of reproduction fabrics but I know now! That is mostly what I have and call the rest of my fabrics "ordinary". I've made her Civil War Sampler quilt and her Union Blues, both of which were challenges as I was a newish quilter when I made the sampler one and the Union Blues was definitely and exercise in patience. I have all the fabrics ready and waiting to make her Richmond Reds when I get inspired. Since I'm not in Facebook or Instagram, where people can send photos of quilts of hers she's made, I emailed her photos of my Civil War Sampler and Union Blues and much to my surprise I got a response almost immediately. She was so gracious. I hope she goes on making fabric designs for years to come.

      Love this Gal. I somehow have a brain very similar to her's. I have at least 20 books, (some tomes), on quilt pqtterns. 1 i have used to almost tatters is 1001 quilt patterns. Since house fire things are boxed, in totes, etc., so i don't know where abouts of alot, so can't even tell who wrote it or ??? I will attempt to find her latest. Not computer literate, so i will persevere. Thank you again for putting forth interviews with the population of the quilt world. Humor, insightful opinions, ideas that generate new ( or old), insightful conversation. Keep on, Karen.

  • @michellecornum5856
    @michellecornum5856 Před 3 lety +3

    Hahahahaha! More cowbell! I remember when her Encyclopedia of Quilting first came out. It was a very hot commodity around here. Back then, there was a lot of gatekeeping about what a quilt was -- if it wasn't made from a nameable pattern in an acceptable way, it wasn't a quilt, it was just you making a messy blanket. This was a really good interview!

    Mrs. Besty Rogers showed me her Mother's Indian Wedding Ring Quilt (now called the Pickel Dish) when I was a child. It was beautiful (in purples, yellows, golds and off white). The place Mrs. Rogers show me that quilt was at the old Roger's cabin, on Mills Branch Road, in Clearfield, Kentucky.
    I have never seen the Indian Wedding Ring (Pickle Dish) pattern used in other areas of the U.S. (now that you both brought that up). Not all the Pickle Dish patterns, offered today, are the same. The one Mrs. Rogers showed me looked a little more like a fish shape (almost like the one you showed on the screen).
    I have wondered what became of that Indian Wedding Ring quilt (I don't want it - I just want to view it again). It was old when Mrs. Rogers showed it to me. I will be 73 years old soon. If that quilt still exists, it would be well over 100 years old. That wasn't the only hand made quilt in Mrs. Rogers' home. For me, it was the most beautiful of all her quilts. All my Mother's and Mrs. Rogers' quilts were small. There were no Queen or King sized beds back then. Also, People were much smaller back then.

    A very interesting interview, however I want to add there is a very long and rich History of quilting going back almost to the beginning of our recorded history , the first recorded quilt may date back to as early as 3400BC in Egypt, then the 12th century in Europe there was quilted undergarments for under armour and the first actual recorded quilts works in Europe is around 1360AD in sicily, there is a Russian quilted carpet made from linen pieces. The history of quilts is something that fascinates me and there are some stunning examples of 17th century Welsh quilts in the Welsh quilt Centre. UK.

    Barbara made it to Japan for quilting. Does she know Kitty Pippen? Kitty was in the same quilt guild with me in Chico, CA when I lived there and she is amazing, as well.

    I loved the interview! Thank you for asking such great questions. I've heard Barbara many times and I still learned some new things. I preordered my book, too, and got the first edition! I still hold onto the old one.

    Great interview! I love reading all of Barbara's blogs and the quilt history perspectives she presents. Picked up the digital Encyclopedia this year as a companion to the EQ8 purchase I made last year!
