The worst part about this is you can’t experience the fear for the first time again
No, certainly not after you unlock AOE Air to Surface weapons. The thrill of having to race to bombard the scinfaxi with a diminutive quantity of missles and dinky little unguided bombs while dodging blasts from the submarine and associated drones is what made this mission scary.
@@traviskitteh I dunno, it was harder when I tried an A-10C with utterly useless (against fortified targets, like scin/hrim's AA weapons) XAGMs. Switched to a Fulcrum, poured UGBs onto it, the AA defenses died in a good two or three passes.
@@traviskitteh It's hilarious how in NG+, you can take it out with a F117A in a single pass. Just dropping all the bombs on it everywhere.

This was one of my favorite moments in this game
Hearing that flat out made me laugh in joy so I didn't have to dodge those stupid missiles anymore in the middle of an attack. If only I knew that they'd rapid-fire the missiles.
Literally just read that with the voice actor saying it. I miss playing this game for the first time.
Interestingly enough, that's exactly the reason for why the Soviets were scared about the 5 Shuttles of the American Space Transportation System built from 1981 to 1990. They were scared that Atlantis, Discovery, Endeavour, Challenger (RIP) and Columbia (RIP) would become Mini-Arkbirds. I imagine Project Aces was inspired by this fear.

this song.... hearing the sonar was bad enough, you knew something big was coming... and then to see that beast surface for the first time with the music to accompany it?! god that was the scariest and most adrenaline pumping moment of my childhood right there when it came to PS2. NO game could top the feelings this game pulled from you! When i first played this mission i KNEW it was far too easy. just knock out landing craft, stay low and strafe. Simple right? HAH, then you get the "climb to 5,000 feet" order as everyone freaks out! at the time i was using the start plane (was thinking it'd be a cake walk) and i *barely* made it over the threshold only to hear the nuggets screaming as they fell... I get immersed in my games.. and that feeling of hopelessness and loss... man it literally made my hands tight on the controller. BEST...MISSION.....EVER
I got immersed in this game many times in the missions. Job well done this game is.

RazgrizKnight when the Arkbird shoots the second missile down I remember thinking, Sub you are soooo dead ...but then it starts firing more missiles and its like can the arkbird hit them all....can I make another attack run before I need to climb again...very tense. This is definitely my favorite ace combat and the soundtrack is amazing
When I heard this theme start and the order to climb. I turned the afterburners on and went full vertical
man i still remember the night i got in this level took me about 12 tries to finish it and i have school the next morning XD

i actually think the graphical limitations made the effect better. because of the visual lag the burst of the missile looked like some kinda gamma ray-ish thing
Good point. I always loved the old graphics because they have an unique charming and feeling into the game! Let's hope that Ace Combat 7 doesn't take it all away! ;)
Reminds me of when I was playing a WWII Pacific game called Pacific Storm, and messing around with custom battles by having a bunch of low alt B-29s drop nukes. The game started to lag like mad, and I watched as my Bomber formation was wiped out by its own ordnance in slow motion. Somehow, that was far more sobering than any other demonstration of nuclear power in fiction I’d ever seen up to that point
Well heck, old games from sixth and 7th console eras does manages to cultivate some sort of charms don’t they? Well heck, even with the old PC exclusive games.

This theme is just incredible, the tension and the atmosphere expressed in this piece are just mindblowing. And while this theme is playing you hear members of allied squadrons struggling. This game is a masterpiece with one of the best soundtracks ever made. Really need an HD remake of AC5. It deserves one.
You know what would kick ass? A remake of this game from the Yuktobanian perspective.

Whydow It’s surprisingly reminiscent of Stonehenge. A whole bunch of planes, caught within a huge air burst weapon, crying as they plummet towards the earth.
As much of a jackass Orson was, I imagine him probably drinking himself to sleep that night realizing that he sacrificed most of their Air Force for nothing

I still remember facing this monster and her sister ship for the first time. The Scinfaxi earned the nickname "The Submarine from hell" out of me! Then when you saw she had a sister you knew round 2 was going to be something else!
The Hrimfaxi fight is even more tense because you have no support from the Arkbird, and the entire invasion force is counting on your success.

The track alone is anxiety-inducing, but when you were there, hearing it as people were screaming at you to climb for dear life as all of most of your fellow soldiers who were just brand new pilots getting slaughtered screaming that they didn't want to die? that still brings a helpless feeling of anxiety to me.

Switch it with Invincible Fleet from time to time.
This track just makes me go: "Finally! The boss reveals itself!' Burst missiles never bothered me. Climb. Dive. Shoot. Climb'.Stonehenge: Now that was a superweapon. You know death is coming when the incoming rounds shake your screen and make the bass rumble ten seconds to impact. Get low and hotdog through a canyon, because you'll be swatted out of the sky if you don't. Hypervelocity Concussion rounds will do that to you.
Honestly, I found Stonehenge scarier. Forced you to fly low in order to not die, meaning you were forced to choose between instant death or potentially hitting the ground. Flying low and not crashing tends to be harder than flying higher.
@@Gamer88334 funny for me was the oposite, scinfaxi gave me a harder time than stonehenge, since I like to get air to ground bombers, so I already fly pretty low to the ground anyways, meaning stonehenge kinda already didnt hit me anyways, or just barelly hit, now when its about climbing there was the fear of "enough time for the bomb run?"
(I used the F-4 for both games with good trusty napalm bombs)
@@brunoreis4455 Ah. Well, I pretty much never use bombers. Who needs bombers when you have a multi-role aircraft? I suck at bombing mobile targets at the moment, but I can basically snipe a target that isn’t moving. If I keep at it, I’ll be able to basically snipe mobile targets with bombs too.

I remember the adrenaline I felt when I first played this mission as a kid. This is easily my favorite one in the game.

The sonar pings are what sells it, the suspense of knowing you have a powerful enemy near yet can’t do a thing about it until help arrives plays on the desperation of the battle

If you remember how the events go in the scinfaxi battle (when the Arkbird actually does its job for once) you can ignore them telling you to go up and just fire away at it.
For the first boss in the game, Scinfaxi's theme might be one of my favourite boss themes of all time to me. Something about this is just colorful and hella unique. To me, it had some variety with it's cello sounds, the sonar pings, the drums and the electro part at the middle of the theme is just blended perfectly. Dare I must say that the only other theme I could think of that reminds me of this is Scaramouche's theme from Genshin Impact on how unique and well blended different genres and instruments both of them are.

Most people see that scene as "Oh, wow, the Scinfaxi is so powerful! Be scared!" which is part it is, but ALSO, the scene is supposed to show this: "The Osean high command just sent a bunch of kids with barely any combat experience to the front lines to be cannon fodder. They have zero regards to human life."

Ahh the beautiful glitch where you rise in altitude and then look down, so you can see the Scinfaxi, without all the water to block the giant silhouette.
I remember that thing moved pretty fast underwater.
I remember somehow flying through the middle of the missile explosion and surviving.
+Dovah Chief So long as you were above the specified altitude, it doesn't matter what explosion effect you went through.
William Rodriguez I also flew through the laser in zero then died from nothing about 3 seconds later after I was past the laser. also I know the missile hit me because I took damage.

When I first played the mission, that sonar got me climbing as high as I could, I was so bloody scared.
This mission was intense. My stomach went upside down each time they launched one of these missiles.
