BMW B58 Problems to Expect - Engine Reliability

- BMW B58 has been making BMW great for almost a decade now and no doubt, it has been a great engine. However, as any piece of high end automotive technology, there are problems and reliability concerns. In this video, I go over the problems you could expect when buying a BMW car with the BMW B58 engine as well as symptoms and possible fixes. I've also have personal experience with this engine in my BMW X7 which I talk about towards the end of the video. Some of the common issues on the B58 engine include issues with valve cover gasket, excessive coolant loss, oil pump, oil filter failure and VANOS solenoids. A lot of these issues have carried over from the N54 and N55 engines, but luckily not nearly as common.

I’m currently looking to buy BMW 840 4door but now I’m stuck I don’t know what to do. From everything I have been reading B58 is robust engine but I am concerned about oil pump.

I think a lot of these issues today are being engineered in by design cost, like plastic covers, water pumps etc, we know they have a much shorter shelf life and can’t hold up to a decade of extreme heat cycles and subsequent gasket leaks. The best engineered cars are behind us today, it’s a great shame.
I believe the X7 has the B58 gen3 and that one i heard has been having some issues
