  • In this video I fish a high desert mountain stream with the cheapest tenkara flies (kebari) I could find. They're from AliExpress and cost around $0.39 per fly. Are they any good? Do they catch fish??

    Tristan, thanks for testing the flies for us... Have a fun challenge for you: Next time you get the chance to fish a creek like that, try to fish a bare hook ( silver, gold or red) it would be an interesting experience!

    Beautiful location. Try this for a cheap fly, not Japanese but works. Cut a 2" piece of Ultra Chenille in fluorescent pink and tie it around a hook with a single over hand knot and fish away.

    Lovely stream and trout. Like most fly fishermen, I have more flies than I'll ever need but most of the time I tie on a Black Woolly Worm when I fish a small stream or creek. It's a fly that could be many edible food items to a trout and I have confidence in it. Sure, there's times when trout turn up their noses at it but I used to waste so much time changing flies with zero or poor result. Often it's not the fly but how it is presented that makes the difference.
    I always enjoy your videos.
    Cheers,
    Steve.

    From my experience almost any type of fly works in those small creeks. They do spook easily but there’s so many fish it’s easy too love on.

    AliExpress is a great source for many items if you have little money and lots of time. I bought a 3.6m Tenkara rod from them. Haven't had a chance to take it out fishing yet. Keep up the good work.

    How do you like the Nirvana 400? I've been.using it to catch bass, crappie and other panfish here in Missouri. I'll take it to Colorado this summer for some mountain stream fishing. What size level line do you use with it? Keep up the good work!
    P.S. - I subsequently went to your gear page and read your comments on the Nirvana 400. I've broken a couple tips - one was definitely my fault, the other not so sure. I agree that the Dragontail replacement parts are reasonably priced and shipped quickly.

      There are no Great Basin redbands in Idaho, so nope. And the redbands we do have (Columbia River redbands) aren't in this particular area. Thanks for watching 👍

    Great stuff. Really enjoying the content and pacing of your videos. Almost like being there. Questions: when fishing rivers, creeks and streams are you fishing with the fly ON the surface in a dead float or dead drifting just under the surface as the fly sinks?

    • @TenkaraAddict
      @TenkaraAddict  Před 4 lety

      I fish them under the surface. Thaks for watching.

    I would like to see what shape the fly was in after 20 plus fish. I've found that you can get more service out of these cheap flies if you use a bit of head cement before fishing to reinforce the wraps and materials.

    • @TenkaraAddict
      @TenkaraAddict  Před 4 lety

      It was in rough shape! Yep, head cement would be a good idea. Thanks Mark.

  • @ianjones6910
    @ianjones6910 Před 4 lety

    Pretty.....it seems like those Tenkara flies would be very easy to tie; I bought a fly-typing "starter kit" last year, but I've yet to break it out. I've used "standard" flies and nymphs with my Tenkara - in most of these small streams, it really doesn't matter much as far as patterns go.

    Great small creek! Is that area south of Pocatello on the way to Malad? I am also trying out new Kebaris that I bought on amazon. Alittle hard right now cuz of the heavy runoff

    • @TenkaraAddict
      @TenkaraAddict  Před 4 lety +1

      Nope, it's not. And yeah, it's a tough time of year to fish because of the runoff. Gotta find those spring creeks. Thanks Steve.

    Now I can’t use the crappy fly excuse. So basically I just suck. Is there a reason you wouldn’t want to just use a regular elk hair caddis or other traditional fly?

    • @TenkaraAddict
      @TenkaraAddict  Před 4 lety +1

      No idea. I've never fished that rod. But as far as length goes, it depends what kind of water you're fishing. If you're going to be fishing small-ish mountain streams, that length will be fine. If you're fishing rivers or lakes, there's no reason not to go for a longer rod.
