- In this video, I am checking out Age of Excuse II by Mgła to see if I think it sucks, or if it will make it to my playlist! (Recorded August 2019)

for me mgła is the gratest black metal band imo album Exercises in futility is top 1

Futility is definitely their magnus opus album if not modern black metal in general. A very pivotal album from 2nd wave to today. Nothing gets more new people into blackmetal than Burzum and MGLA - exercises in futility

I always find it almost funny how nihilistic their lyrics are, and at the same time, their music is so beautiful, especially the drums, which have a melodic aspect. I feel it creates a contrast between what is said and what is being played by the instruments, kinda like the music prevails over the nihilism, because of how it makes me feel alive

Yes, it's like the music evokes feelings of hope and beauty, whereas the lyrics are completely nihilistic. I love this band and I'm deeply conflicted because nihilism is a trap and a dangerous philosophy to live by, imo. Some people find it romantic and cool, but it's just utter depression in disguise. Life is such a gift and there's beauty in pain.

For me, the appeal of the style has to do with the emotion it evokes. People overuse the “acquired taste” cliche, but it really is something you either connect with, or don’t. I love it, but I understand why it doesn’t translate.
Yeah, there is always some kind of mood in music. Often we find ourselves seeking out certain emotions. Maybe it is easier to have it in the music.
@@everysongsucks I think for some folks there’s a sense of catharsis is playing dark or violent in the music and that can be healthy in a weird way. I’ve always felt a strange empowerment in it. Not necessarily in the lyrical message, though there is value in that for all its nihilism. But in the emotion the music conjures, there’s a magic in that, for me. And it isn’t a negative feeling it gives me. I imagine it’s similar to what a devoutly Christian person feels when they hear gospel. I think it’s worth it to still try black metal on occasion, just to see if you end up catching any of that magic, but never feel obligated to feel it, or that it’s a ‘you’ problem if you don’t.

I'm not sure when they'll release a new album, but I would hope for something a bit different :) To me, Age of Excuse was trying too hard to be Exercises in Futility 2. Pretty good songs, but the experience (sound, feeling, approach/attitude) was almost similar.
That is fair to hope for some variance in the future from them.

If you want something a bit different, check out Kriegsmaschine (KSM), which is Mgla's alter-ego (both bands consist of M. on guitars/vocal and Darkside on drums; KSM predates Mgla and in the past had more band members). KSM has more progressive sound, drums are almost jazzy and lyrics are more personal, although still dark and nihilistic. Tempo is slower (last album does not contain even one blastbeat part). IMHO, Mgla's sound is more approachable to an outsider than Kriegsmaschine's, though.
Also, check out Hauntologist, which is a project consisting of The Fall (bassist of Mgla's live line-up) on guitars/vocal and Darkside on drums. Hauntologist continues where Mgla ends, in a sense - it's more post-black metal than pure BM. As an example, check out "Hollow", "Gardermoen" and "Car Krukow", these are very different from standard BM.
BTW, Mgla is expecting to release two albums this year - one should be a sort of retrospective or live and the other will be a new stuff. As Kriegsmaschine albums are usually released ahead of Mgla's, one could expect new KSM album this year as well.

is the feeling of the album really indiciative of the album itself being a rehash of the same ideas, or is it that the world itself is just continually projecting these same ideas into the musicians? i've been listening to them since groza and to me their sound has always been a black metal reflection of the world they see, and in my own perception their ideas on this album do reflect the times they were written in, rather than just being a regurgitation of the previous album but different
