    I purchased several similar units and the Direct Drive is the best. It does not sound quite as good as a quality tube amp when cranked, but with a couple od and modulation pedals it's very nice at any volume. My board is simple: Tim, ts9 mini, OCD, trem, rev/delay, direct drive. At first I ran the direct drive xlr to the pa and the thur line to a small tube amp, but It sounds great on its own, especially with a good monitor. Love it.

    Hey Radial Engineering! Great little box you have there! Are there any plans to add a "AC Top Boost" emulation setting? If you make a "British Invasion" edition of it I will buy it as well. I am actually purchasing the JDX Direct Drive today to finalize my Boss MS-3 board, so I can show up with a guitar and a suitcase and play!

  • @JRP3music
    @JRP3music Před 5 lety +1

    A reverb is ideal to use with these speaker simulator to sound more like a real amp, add delay and other fx after your drive pedals and you will get a better amp like tone than just completely dry, unless the PA is adding some ambience.

    I've been using your Radial JDX DI box successfully, so I'm certain this probably sounds realistic. Question: As much this is a cool convenient approach, I like the sound of my head & how it reacts to pedals but want to stop using cab completely. Do u guys make something like a Mesa cab-clone? I prefer your products because of the realism I achieved with JDX. Hopefully something that doesn't cost more than my amp too LOL

    • @radialengineering
      @radialengineering  Před 6 lety

      Yes! Just be sure to use the "THRU" output for a non-effected DI signal.
      Any Reamper will do! Since you're new to recording maybe try the budget ProRMP first. It's passive but should work great with the hotter signal from the JDX Direct Drive. www.radialeng.com/product/prormp/

    • @radialengineering
      @radialengineering  Před 7 lety

      Yes, the JDX Direct-Drive is our best option for speaker and amp emulation and provides multiple outputs to send it wherever you would like, so you can definitely run it simultaneously with your Triaxis' output.

    • @radialengineering
      @radialengineering  Před 6 lety

      Hey Jay, no you do not need a preamp. You can use the 1/4" Output which runs at instrument level to your board. You can also use it like a standard Direct Box with the balanced XLR Output to run (up to 300') into your board's preamp (the same as if you were plugging in a microphone). Ok, could someone please explain the difference between:
    Amp sim
    Cab sim
    DI box

    • @bradbier
      @bradbier Před 6 lety +4

      DI box - lets you send instruments like guitar and bass directly to microphone inputs of mixers or sound boards. Converts unbalanced, high-impedance outputs to balanced, low-impedance signals. Can perform a lot of functions like impedance matching, buffering, ground lift.
      Cab sim - simulates the frequency response of a speaker/cabinet combination with analog (or digital) electronics, implementing a filter network. You can hear the difference in this video when he plays "direct in" (DI box only) and then brings in the "cab sim" - big difference in frequency response. Sounds fuller and more live than the thin direct in.
      Amp sim - simulates the dynamic performance of an amplifier, without actually having one. I guess you could consider "amp in a box" pedals as amp simulators in that they significantly amplify the signal and clip the sound into distortion, and have a lot of EQ options.

  • @originalsongsbyjonathanlew1512

    Hi radial. Do you need a preamp pedal before the radial direct drive?

    • @EternalRecursion
      @EternalRecursion Před 4 lety

      The JDX is an active direct box, therefore, it is a preamp. However, it is a unity gain preamp, which means it neither cuts nor boosts your signal. Its purpose is to provide a few amp/cabinet simulations within the direct box. You could put a preamp in front of it to do EQ or manipulate the gain structures within the preamp, and the JDX would act as either a cabinet simulation - the 4x12 setting - or one of the amp/cab simulations. I intend to get one just because it is, by far, the most affordable Fender Twin simulation in a direct box configuration, which is what I want for my pedal effects rig.

    4:10 Bit of an unfair comparisson since you're comparing a direct interface sound here whereas most DAW have AMP and CAB simulation (Ex Amp Designer in Logic).

  • @aikensource
    @aikensource Před 7 lety +8

    My problem: you said it's an amp simulator, not a cab simulator, and a DI box. But it has no preamp in it or an effects loop, so I would have to have a pedal to act as a preamp, and send the last pedal in my entire board into this pedal/cab simulator. Doesn't really do it for me, honestly. It's a tidly bit misleading

    • @radialengineering
      @radialengineering  Před 7 lety +5

      Hey @Sparkplug1034, thank you for the feedback! Having an effects loop is something that we will consider putting in future revisions of the JDX Direct-Drive.
      The Direct-Drive is intended primarily for it's amplifier voicing and is intentionally clean sounding to allow guitarists to use their favorite pedals in front of it. There is no preamp in the pedal as it's DI Output will eventually be sent to a mixing board's preamp.

    • @aikensource
      @aikensource Před 7 lety +6

      Radial Engineering
      I understand. I as a guitarist don't trust the sound system of places I play in. I want everything I need for my tone at my feet and I want to send a signal straight to the sound guy that is ready to be nearly unaltered and projected in full range speakers. I would purchase a product like this if it has at least a clean preamp with EQ controls and an effects loop. It seems little more to me than a nice di box with a cab sim (which is great, but necessitates more pedals to go with it)
      My point: I think those things are worth considering for a future version. I'd be willing to pay more

      Thanks. I have a Martin 000D28, with a Boggs pickup installed, that I send to a mixer via a DI box. I don't use an amp onstage. Will a Direct Drive help with acoustic voicing? If not, is there another box that would augment the acoustic sound? I don't want or need a pedal board. I like the sound differences that the video displays with the Direct-Drive. Thanks!

      @franfender Před 6 lety +6

      Loop effects in a Di box/amp simulator? Do you really know how work a signal chain? an effect loop is useful only if you are using the saturated channel of your amplifier and you need to use modulation, reverb or delay effects, otherwise you don't need an effect loop, especially if you are not using any kind of amplifier because you are connected directly to the console.
