honestly, i feel like if the spikes were retractable that could eliminate all the liability. being able to choose when the spikes point out could also eliminate having to remove and reset the trap!
Or like a rubber mat with inverted cones on the bottom to cover them
it seems like that doesn't really address the pet issue. also, i'd be afraid i'd forget to retract the spikes in the morning after the raccoons leave in the early morning.
that would cost too much
@Water Jogger I was referring to the manufacturing and developing. The margins would not be as great and it would cost too much compared to the original concept.
or just put a big sheet over the top step of your pool and lock your trashcans. i don't see the issue honestly
Kevin seems like the only shark that even though he doesn’t see the personal value in a product, he still recognizes there’s a market and money to be made
Hey man there's a guy on CZcams that feeds racoons hot dogs every night
Lol! Right?! I forgot about him.
Yes James
I don't know exactly who you're talking about too lol. This product is a terrible idea. And not just because of the man who feeds them the hot dogs. It's an evil product.
Put a fence around your pool. Problem solved.
This guy 🤣🤣🤣
That royalty felt like some room for negotiation was possible
Mannnn he couldve at least tried to shake him down to $2 flat XD
I was really surprised with that. very high for a perpetual.. it should have been till money back cause he still had 15% in the business!
I agree…he could’ve countered with it either going away after say $500K is recouped, or after Kevin gets his $115K back, in perpetuity it goes down to $.50 or $1 per
Yeah him not countering is just terrible business. So many ways to get around that. ugh.
@@Hotobu Nope, He was glad to have Kevin in his team...
One of the best entrepreneurs I've seen in regards to taking a deal. No hesitation. He knows the value of the shark and also that it's a one off type of business. It's not the next Amazon or anything
you really do think paying a $2.50 per unit perpetuity was a good idea?
A good entrepreneur would have put a cap on the perpetuity.
Yeah, he should have said that the royalty drops off once the money is repaid
I think he knows his product sucks and is just taking what he can get lol
2.50 lifetime is pretty horrible but eh who knows company can turn into something greater in the future
Kevin knows after shark tank airs, the 50,000 units will be sold, and he will make his money back. That's the true reason why he does royalty deals.
true. smart.
And it's honestly not a bad deal at all. He doesn't take more equity, doesn't take a huge percentage of the margin, and you only had $80k in revenue to start off with
Kevin saw a product people would buy for a problem which isn't going anywhere with huge margin & He knows company isn't going to skyrocket in valuation. This was a perfect case for a royalty deal no over the top marketing is needed just kevin makes some calls puts this in retail chains and here's a perfect passive business for him and the owner. Kevin is someone who will invest in a plain boring business other sharks won't
A plain boring business is underrated.
Mr wonderful
Yep making bank on all his royalties alone. Ugh. Wish i was rich.😒😂
Couldn't have said it any better
Aww you can see the entrepreneur is really all in and wants the best for his business. Good luck!
Don’t seem like it doing great not bad but not great. Still in business but bringing in less then a million.
If this were the case then mouse traps, bee spray, poison pellets etc would all be a liability. Cleary the rich, spoiled sharks have no clue except Kevin
I think they know they can win the case in court. It's about going through the tiresome litigation process that they want to avoid.
@@dizzyb111 you put a warning label on the packaging. The liability is now on the buyer. If you buy a car and crash into someone, you could be sued, not the auto company.

The solution to the liability problem is to make the spikes conceal when weight over 50lbs of weight is on them because the heaviest racoon weighs 50lbs.

Exactly. This isn't some billion dollar business. It's a cheap product with a high margin with a smaller niche market. By scaling the business with the investment he can reduce the margin even more so doesn't mind giving up a royalty.
He told you the margins
Costs about 8.50ish to make and sells for $29.99-$32

Cuban aint wrong, "they aren't sueing you, there going to sue me!"
we actually use these prickers to ward off pigeons from windows and they work 😄
pigeons are smart, there's no need for something like this. The "equivalent" product where I live are soft rubber "spikes" that the pigeons see & avoid, but that cause no harm to anyone or any animal that actually touches them
@@mehere8038 We literally have barbed wire here
@@bbking006 and does it work? I'm guessing probably no, cause there's plenty of spaces for small pigeon feet between the spikes. The soft spikes we use on the other hand are completely effective. The heavy duty ones for major problem areas are 10cms long & spikes every 3cms, so the birds just look at them & fly away, cause they see absolutely no option to land without being totally impaled - but if they actually tried flying straight into them, they'd find they'd bend out of their way, they don't try it though
@@mehere8038 I believe it does. I have never seen a bird on my window sill but I also would not want to touch it.

The spikes remind me of Super Mario Galaxy 2's Flip Out Galaxy. In that game, the spikes retract.
Think it’s a good product for those that would want to fortify their property of any and all potential trespassers. Not just the raccoons but those crafty squirrels 🐿 😂
Everyone: this could really hurt someone
Kevin: I think Ill make money with this
Hear me out. If the raccoons have hypersensitive hands, that means it doesn't need to be that sharp. And surely there's an equilibrium point where its still sharp enough to be effective against raccoons but dull enough so that if a person were to step on it, thr weight distribution would mean that their foot doesn't get injured.
You can literally walk on nails without being injured if they're arranged next to each other. I really don't think these are dangerous. Probably wouldn't feel good to step on, but it won't injure you. I think traditional mouse traps have a lot more probability of hurting someone and tons of people use those.
I could do a breakdown of why you're wrong if you'd like but I assume you don't care?

I mean I live out in the country where I let my dogs out several times a day, I got kids running around the yard and my fear would be the same, what if my dog or a child is walking, goes to get in the pool or throw the trash out, and they step on it. I’d rather just have a locked lid for my trashcans and a fence around my pool
The product should be retractable ... that way, during the nights, just flip it up
Seems like a good idea but also something your dad can duplicate with some pvc snd other makeshift objects laying around the garage or Home Depot
Hey @Lobster Butter - not everyone has a creative, or alive Dad willing to spend time on a project, that you are too lazy to buy !!
Joe is adorable. Of course, the raccoons will evolve to overcome this obstacle cuz that's what they do, but this will probably throw them for at least a few months. They are damn crafty.

Barbara: I like racoons... and for that reason I'm out
Sharp problem can easily be solved...just dull the tips down a bit. So the feeling would be stepping on a lego rather than a perfectly sharp spike.
yeh, that's what it should have been to begin with if he really wanted to go down this path of repelling animals with force, but those products already exist & at prices he can't compete with. Daisu near me sells sheets of spikes to keep cats & other animals out for $2.80 per large sheet. They basically have a lego like level of discomfort, but each spike is spaced around an inch apart & about an inch long, so animals like cats HATE them, but if you fall on them or something, it won't actually cause any harm cause they're soft enough they'll bend rather than break skin

Raccoons are smart and once they get deterred a couple times, they’ll stop going to that location. Once you see raccoons again, put it back out. Probably need to do that four or five times a year in the summer/spring for a week at a time for them to learn. Plus he’s right, you don’t need to surround the entire pool, or a whole lawn.
AND if neighbors are walking in your yard, that’s trespassing.

Man I'm just gonna be chillin with the racoons. They are best friends for life
I invented the bandit blaster. It’s basically a shot gun with a bit of string between the door handle and the trigger. Bandit walks in and BAM!! No more bandit!
If you have neighbors jumping over your fence, you have bigger problems than some little plastic spikes surrounding your pool or trash can.
Those neighbors jumping over fences, will likely be wearing shoes ... ehhh Barbara?
7:16 that awkward hand shake 💀
That’s like saying “oh i sell knives! Well better make sure it’s not sharp so my stupid customer don’t cut themselves” such a dumb reasoning! It’s not his fault if that happens and you simply have to put a disclaimer on packaging, done, deal.

Barbra has a luxury apartment in Manhattan, there is no fence for her neighbors to jump over
google what property Barbara owns , hint , hint . . . you'll find she owns in L.A.
There are plenty of people with pools that don't have pets or kids. Not to mention that the pool idea is just one aspect, I'd assume most people would place this atop their fences for multiple animals or intruders.
Hahaha trash panda! That's a nod to the Guardians of the Galaxy 2 that Quill says to Rocket!
Barbara: “My neighbor likes to skinny dip in my pool, and for that reason I’m out.”
Raccoons are extremely smart animals. If you get one cornered it’s vicious and will fight literally to the death. They will probably move something on top of that if there’s something they really want beyond it. You have to trap and relocate them. It’d be better to make trash cans covered in spikes
It is kinda funny but true tho
He should make them retractable during daylight with a switch, prob solved.

Because of course unwanted critters ALWAYS wait until sundown...
@@Hotobu or if you just want to plan when they retract for safety reasons for others. It doesn’t have to be just a nighttime thing. I agree with you that critters can come at all hours.
