Bill Russell had a good point. Paxton wouldn’t have been there. So the league was less watered down because there were significantly less teams to spread talent across the league. His spot would not be there and he would be reduced to a spectator. However, at the same time Bill your team of Hall of Famers would not be on your same team in a modern league with Free Agency. You benefited in an era where you could keep your championship team together with no competitive salaries to lure players away. Most of those 11 Championships would not be in your trophy as well. Maybe a few. Keep it all the way real not just half way. Now if someone one all those championships on the same team in the modern era they would definitely be the goat, but that would be damn near impossible in modern times. Context is key ppl.
BILL RUSSEL MADE THEM HALL OF FAMERS. CELTICS ONLY WON 34 GAMES WHEN HE RETIRED. BILL RUSSEL WAS THAT GOOD THEY WASN'T THE MOST DOMINATE OFFENSE EITHER.
@@coreythomas3633 Probably true for perhaps HALF of the HOF players of the Celtics of his era - but keep in mind that most of those had RETIRED by the time Bill did. It IS amazing how low ranked their offense was during most of his era - sometimes LAST in the NBA, while their defense was usually #1.
After all you can't compare different eras. Bill did win in a time where he had to stand in the back of the bus as a black man. People nowadays don't get what this giant of a man had to endure. For me top 5 all time. And for sure there are better players nowadays skillwise.. they better be with all the millions and nutrition etc.
Both guys were pathalogically competitive, and were the best in their era at the defensive end. If they were on the same team both in their prime, that team would prob never lose a game.
During his prime years MJ was better than Pippen and Rodman. Pippen became a great defender with his main attribute being his length, but he never had MJ's tenacity, foot speed or cat like quickness. Rodman was a great on ball defender and was physically very strong and athletic, but so was MJ. MJ could D up the other teams PG, and would routinely block the center's shot. Rodman only had to worry about defense and rebounding, MJ did it while being the best offensive player at the same time, he almost wasn't human. @@finerbiner
@@user2176 Jordan was the gambler and he was very good at it. The only reason he was free to do that was because Rodman and Pippen could cover him being out of position. Also, look at the first championship. They lose the first game and are having trouble in the second. They put Pippen in Jordans place guarding Magic and the Bull smoke the Lakers from there on. Pippens full court pressure disrupted their entire flow on offense. Pippens 7'+ wingspan allowed him to guard bigger people than Jordan could. Rodman could guard all 5 positions and did. Shaq himself says Rodman guarded him better than anyone. Jordan could have never guarded Shaq Of course opinions and a$$... But, I was live at a lot of games in those first two championship years so that is my reference.
Pippen did a great job on an old beat up end of his career Magic, They put Pippen on Magic to free MJ up so he could roam free on defence and save energy for the offensive end. Old slow Magic was the perfect guy for Pippen to guard, cause he always struggled against quick explosive players, Dominique used to own Pippen until he got old and lost a step after his achilies injury. MJ would play better D on Wilkins, and that's a SF who Pippen should be able to guard. As for Rodman, ya he could guard bigger guys cause he had uncanny strength for his size, But MJ could guard ultra quick point guards who should have been quicker than him, but they weren't, and he had the length and strength advantage over them and most other 2 guards. Rodman also used a lot of dirty tactics, he broke the rules and took many liberties outside of just playing straight up D. Jordan would have spent alot of time in a body cast if he played in Bill’s and Wilt’s era. No Jordan rules back then. Traveling, palming, walking, and legitimate foul calls. You know, real basketball.
Something that a lot of people don't know is that the NBA playoff format back in Bill's day was shorter -- in most of their playoff runs, Boston only had to win 8 playoff games to become champions. That's part of why it's difficult to compare across eras. While it had to be that way because there were only 9 teams, we recognize a playoff tournament in Jordan's day where you had to win 15 playoffs games to be champion is relatively more grueling.
No, it was more grueling in Bill Russell's era. He had to navigate his way through angry hate mobs. He couldn't travel with the team, shower in the same facilities, eat at the same restaurants. Sometimes he couldn't even get a hotel room. He was called hateful names, treated like a dog and still won. MJ would have folded under those conditions.
@@mikekillagreen9432 The Chicago Bulls still had a heck of a road just to get out of the East -- just check out their 1997 postseason opponents as that's probably their most difficult run. Facts though just saying outright Wilt is the GOAT of basketball is not absolute but he is definitely in that conversation with Kareem and Bill Russell whereas Jordan more so an all time starting 5 in the sg position rather than the GOAT conversation. Aleksander Karelin probably is the most dominant sports figure as he only lost like twice at the tail end of his career and wasn't in a decisive fashion either I don't think while having a career that spanned over decades. When people bring up 'killer instinct' or 'will to win' for guys like Michael Jordan or Tom Brady in sports it should really be attributed more to Aleksander Karelin considering it's a 1v1 and a grueling sport on top of that.@@BillouNicky

Mr. Russell will be remembered as the greatest champion in team sports. However, Michael can make the argument that, when a championship was on the line, his team was truly invictus.

Faulty logic that makes no sense. If the 90s were compacted, and there were only the top players were remaining in the league. That would mean several of the Bulls players would be cut, and there would be a lot of redistribution in the league. That would also mean a roster change and Jordan would have even BETTER players on his team, therefore he would have even more options.
This makes no sense ... If Jordan played in the 60's when there were 12 teams, he would have had even better teammates on his team than John Paxson. The talent would have to be higher becuase of the higher competition for one spot on the team.
Following Bill's logic about Paxson being in the stands means that their would have been a better player than Paxson on the team that MJ could have passed the ball to and if someone who was better than Paxson could make the shot then it makes sense that MJ still could have won those championships. Which is a weird statement coming from a defensive player who needed to pass and for others to make shots. IMO this doesnt disprove that MJ was wrong about it being easier to win championships in Bill's era.

If I were starting a team Bill Russell would be the person to build around. If not Bill then Magic Johnson.
Right On Bill, you are still the greatest…hands down..
Both guys were pathalogically competitive, and were the best in their era at the defensive end. If they were on the same team both in their prime, that team would prob never lose a game.
Michael was a top 5 in the league defender but only the third best on his own team.
Rodman was the #1, Pippen was #2
During his prime years MJ was better than Pippen and Rodman.
Jordan could have never guarded Shaq
Of course opinions and a$$...
MJ could just straight up D you up, without being dirty, or looking for a strategic matchup were he had advantages, he wanted everyone to know he was better than them, at all times, he never let up, he was border line insane. @@finerbiner

Yeah but expansion watered down the league. Way harder to win in Kobe and Lebron's era. The skill, shooting and super teams.
@@mikekillagreen9432 The Chicago Bulls still had a heck of a road just to get out of the East -- just check out their 1997 postseason opponents as that's probably their most difficult run. That happened after 3 NBA expansions, and some of those 60+ win opponents were expansion teams like Miami and Orlando.
League looked much more watered down in the 2000s in the Eastern conference where you had very few teams with 50+ wins and multiple teams under .500 getting playoff seeds.
How many rounds were there then?
@@standardofexcellence Before it changed in the late 60s, there were the division semifinals, division finals, and NBA finals. Division semis were treated like a play-in tournament, so because of their regular season record the Boston Celtics only had to play the division finals and NBA finals.
Division semis early on were a best 2-of-3 series then became a best 3-of-5. Division finals and NBA finals were 7-game series just like we know today.

@@FoobasSports Game 7's, yes. He did lose a finals vs. Wilt's "Lakers", though. Meanwhile, "His Airness" walked out invictus when the championship was on the line, every time. 90's "Bulls" never even allowed a game 7 to take place in a finals series.
No salary cap for Bill Russel’s team…
There is a reason we have team achievements and we have individual achievements. Anytime u mention championships that is a team effort.
the question is, do you want to play like how bill russell play? if Im given a chance, if what my talent would be, I'd take MJ overall.
Jordan gat his ass wiped by Russel and Chamberlain
Dumb title - it’s the best players and fans of today that are humbled by Russell he addressed the arogence and ignorance displayed by those that have so much to say but have so little knowledge.
Dude played on a stacked ass team 😂 and averaged 15 ppg
I loved Bill Russell, but I don't follow his logic. If there were only twelve teams, Jordan still could've driven into the lane, attracted a crowd, then kicked it out to *some* open shooter. It didn't have to be Paxton.
Damn. People must be confusing the goat.
I had surgery. Can do and say as I please.
Jordan would have won 9 in a row if it wasn't for baseball an if they would of keep the team together
