- How does Baldur's Gate 3 Multiplayer work? Today, we're going to dive into Baldur's Gate 3, the larger than life RPG that is bringing a table-top gaming experience to PCs and the PS5, and the ability to play with 3 friends in a 4 player multiplayer environment in this massive release is a huge draw for many to play Baldur's Gate 3. Let's talk about the options and how it is all going to work:
TYPES OF MULTIPLAYER:
JOINING RANDOM ADVENTURES
There are several types of multiplayer : The first one is where you join another person's campaign, this can be a friend or a random person with the option to allow others to join turned on. Some people may want to experience Baldur's Gate 3 completely in single player, and that is completely possible, but if you turn on the option to allow others to join in the settings, then others can pop in your game and take control of the companions in your party. You have full control over this companion and move them around the world as you please. The main host will still have control over dialogue options, however the guest or guests will see what is happening when initiated in Baldur's Gate 3 but will be able to see what others have joined are voting for in the dialogue options. This option is great for several types of players of Baldur's Gate 3 : People who just want to pick up and join another random person or when you have a friend playing Baldur's Gate 3 but your timeframes of playing don't quite line up so you hop in when you can.
MULTIPLAYER FROM SCRATCH : STATIC GROUP
What I think will be the most popular option in Baldur's Gate 3 and the one I'm most interested in is when you create a Multiplayer Game from the beginning and invite your 3 friends to join you. This is a situation where most typically you all agree to meet at a certain time on a certain day of the week to enjoy Baldur's Gate 3 like you would a D&D campaign together. In this case, everyone makes their own character however they choose, picking the race and class and all of the options. If someone is missing for a session, the party can choose to bring one of the companions in their place and continue playing. The age old issue of someone dropping out of the campaign will not sting as bad as in tabletop RPGs in this case. Now each player can run around and start dialogue options, and decisions will affect everyone, but everyone will see these dialogue options and can vote on what they want where the person that started the dialogue will see what they are voting for but does not HAVE to choose what the majority voted for, the person who activated it can instead make their choice regardless of what others say. This makes sense because if you think of Roleplay and situations like Oaths that Paladins have, you wouldn't want others to make you an oathbreaker or to ruin your roleplay of your character. Just like how everyone in your D&D campaign can thwart the adventure, so too in Baldur's Gate 3 can this happen and it makes it more rich and interesting. And no, you don't have to stick together for the entire thing, although with the difficulty of Baldur's Gate 3, staying generally together would probably be a great idea.
MULTIPLAYER COMBAT:
Since Baldur's Gate 3 is based on D&D 5th Edition, the combat works exactly as you would expect, at the beginning of a battle the players and the enemies roll for initiative, and the highest roll goes first and works it's way through in a turn based fashion. So you will see on your screen the others doing their action and can see at the top the turn order so you can plan what you want to do for your turn. Once it's your turn you decide where your player moves and what actions and bonus actions you take and then end your turn moving it on to the next person. The twist in Bladur's Gate 3's combat is that When characters are next to each other in turn order, players can simultaneously control characters and combine spells and abilities, while still reducing the waiting time between turns. Baldur's Gate 3 is the perfect emulation of D&D tabletop combat in this sense and allowing options to speed up combat with the shared-initiative but with beautiful visuals instead of having to only use your imagination.
A Co-op Multiplayer Experience:
Baldur's Gate 3 is a co-operative multiplayer game, although you certainly CAN shoot a fireball at your group members, the game is designed for you to work together and at the time of the recording of this video, there is no plans for Player vs Player type experiences beyond having the ability to do that in the campaign.

Planing to play with some high school friends, all married, one with children, BG3 simply made us come back together, hoping for some memorable moments.
You’ll be playing this for the next 5 years 😂 good luck.

Games taking away split screen was one of the more frustrating things ever, I am so proud of BG3 for bringing it back.
Agreed!
Only pc and ps5, it was removed on xbox x because series s can't handle it. So hopefully you are on either pc or ps5

Serious? Who plays split screen?

I literally have been searching for this exact information. Thank you so much for covering this!
Glad it helped, was my pleasure
You can tell how much the devs REALLY poured their heart and soul into this game. They literally gave split screen co-op to a game no one would have expected it from but it absolutely makes sense. I was a diablo defender, i still enjoy it. But i think i'll be finding a few friends and seeing if i can get a group together for a from scratch multiplayer experience on the weekends. I've never played D&D but i've always wanted to.
Such a good game. I will be playing this for many years.
Me too! So excited!
I've played the early release for many years already lol. 200hrs+ the full game is going to be insane.
Coop in DOS 2 is the best one I experienced to this day. Cant wait to play BG3 with friends
Yeah looking like BG3 is going to be even better imo
Wow they really seem to have invested in the co-op aspect. That's awesome!
I think so too!
Right? A lot of ideas that people have wanted since the inception of gaming, this feels like an evolution of Neverwinter Nights multiplayer experience, if they keep adding to it and make a DM mode for players to create campaigns this would easily take over DND gaming spheres.
Im really excited for couch co-op. My wife plays d&d but not many video games. This will be a cool way for us to enjoy each other's hobbies together. I can lean on her for her knowledge of how to play D&D and I can help her with interfacing with the actual game.
Have fun! Sounds like a nerdy good time
I can't find out how to couch op on pc...😢

4 player co-op with vocals on discord, fuck that's so GOOD
Not a DnD guy but a huge gamer. My friend is in to DnD so weve been thinking about giving this a go together. This answered all my questions about best options. Thanks brotha
The friction when your friend's do stuff you don't like just makes it feel even more like a table top =)
THANK! YOU! The absolute odyssey i went through to find information on that topic over the last few days.
Glad I could help!
Ok, first timer here at your channel. This was an excellent video, your narration skills and pleasant, easy-to-understand voice, the way you broke down this video into well put together chapters, and the detail and depth of the information has made me an instant subscriber. After actually watching: great video! Well thought out and you really took your time to adress potential questions in detail.

Happy to help!
A way around the set party from the beginning mechanic of your friends want to jump in, is you can hire basically mercenaries you create from the undead skeleton in your camp. So you can create a chac your buddy wants to use and then have him switch to it.
Brilliant
Great video Nathan. Now you've got me stoked, I hope my computer can run it.
Fingers crossed!
cant wait for this game, me and a friend are already thinking of what characters we are going to make and what kinda stuff we will do. I can imagine us doing a lot of playthroughs with just how much this game seems to have going on.

Super excited to play through this with my son! It will be his first experience with d&d and this type of game
Excellent video my father uncle and I just did some multiplayer testing last night and it was a blast! Gonna be continuing tonight. :D
Have fun!
Yo?? I didn't know the shared initiative is a thing! That's amazing.
Can't wait for when it comes out, have plans for MP from scratch and it's gonna be so much fun
Thanks for putting this video together. It was helpful in learning about the multiplayer option of BG3. However one of the most important things I didn't catch in this video was if 4 players start at the same time and play together consistently, do the creatures in the game become more powerful or not. I would think there would be some sort of balance in that regard by Larian but can't find anything definite about it. I'm looking at possibly multiboxing 4 accounts on 4 computers with 4 purchases of the game. I'm not looking for any advantage, this is only my way of playing RPGs and MMORPGs and it's fun to me to figure out how to do unique ways of playing online.
No I don’t think it adjusts or scales but since even in single player you have 4 total : you + 3 companions, the game is built for 4 people and has plenty of challenge
Finally clear and detailed explanation. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Can't wait to play this game for years to come! Now, I just need to lure my friends into the world of DnD.
This might be the game to do it!
Very informative, thank you!

No couch coop on PC...

Great video, great content. Subbed!
Much appreciated!
I've only played the game solo and normally this is what I prefer. However, I have a few irl friends who love the game and I think this is one of the rare times I would actually be willing to either join them or have them join me. I think that would also be a good way to show them cool stuff you did or found and have them show you too. I am currently on my 2nd playthrough and I am choosing different dialogue options to fit a chaotic neutral character and it's almost brand new for me already.
perfect video. I give you my like bro. thank you a lot.
No problem 👍
Thanks for this man
Thank you!
Im planning to run a solo campaign, a 2p campaign and a 4p campaign. Super excited!
Sounds great! So much content!
Game looks great and can't wait to play with a friend.
With computers being able to handle 2 monitors, can you do split screen and split it on each monitor?
This looks amazing. I can't find anybody locally to play D&D with. I'll be playing both single player and custom multiplayer with 2, possibly 3, others.
Oh yes, I am so excited for this
I am already thinking of multiple singleplayer campaigns I want to run, but I would love to play some multiplayer.
Yeah it really adds so much more thought and play throughs and with friends they will be doing things you wouldn’t normally do so you see even more possibilities!
Single player campaign (twice, at least) - Drow Warlock/Paladin hybrid and a Dark Urge Fighter playthrough plus 2 different coop games with different friends. Gonna be running into 2024.
We got some wild adventures ahead of us! Warlock/Pally Drow sounds awesome!
I love automated subtitles. also Butter Skate 3 is my favorite game 😂
lol
The hype is real. I am ready for this game :)
oh, and great video and good write-up!
Glad you enjoyed it! Hyyyype!
Great vid. Kinda wished you touched on how loot works in multiplayer. I played divinity 2 with some friends and having one guy take all the loot can really dampen the experience. Everyone you have been warned lol!
Yeah sounds like that’s how it works here too, tell your greedy friends to git gone!
DnD group sessions every week for this would be awesome 🔥
Yeah that's how a couple of my groups are planning it, going to be so much fun! I hope they use this engine and we see other campaigns brought into the engine, imagine playing DnD official campaigns like this
going to play with my hubby and some friends...and possibly my daughter depending on some settings :D
Playing DnD with friends where the Dungeon Master is God (RNG) sounds quite exhilarating! I look forward to the full release, plan on doing a blind playthrough without reloading saves with my best bud. We will deal with whatever the Universe throws our way, it is what it is and I wouldn't want it any other way.
does that mean if you get party wiped you'll start again? :P
Great video. Well explained. Helped my wife and I decide how we'll play together. (From scratch)
Glad it helped!
I already know what I am doing when I t release I am going solo for the first playthrough then with a friend this game going to be huge already pre-order on PS5 can't wait
I might get it again on PS5 lol
For multiplayer combat, don't know how important it is for immersion purposes or what have you, but you can also have someone initiate combat one at a time for ranged pre-emptive strikes, and then follow suit with the other party members out of combat, since their initiative hasn't been rolled yet. It can potentially shave down a few enemies before the fight is in full swing depending on turn order from the first initiative roll from party member one, and maybe make a fight easier to handle as you bring each member into initiative rolls one at a time, as opposed to all jumping in at once.
I noticed this while playing on the EA. I had disbanded the group, positioned all the characters in strategic positions, then when I initiated combat with my ranger I noticed the other characters that were sneaking and hidden were still able to move around and reposition.
Cheese at its stinkiest 🤣🤣
@@emerynoel567hardly even cheese. Just because that's not how it works in dnd doesn't mean it's cheesing.
@@jiaan100 It's all good, bud. It has nothing to do with dnd, it's about working around the rules to get free attacks and buffs. It's about how the mechanic doesn't represent real life (i.e. enemies aren't going to stare at each other in turn-based time while others are running around in real-time). So, yeah, it's cheese. I'm not saying it's BAD cheese, but it _is_ cheese.
Question: If my friend and I start a coop splitscreen in his playstation, will I still be able to continue playing with the character I created when I come home and play BG3 in my playstation in online coop? and the experience/things we can do will be the same?
Great video btw!
Also the host holds the saved data. It is not jum in jump out coop. You make a new character when joining your friends story. Or you both start from the beginning, but remember the host always has to start the game. Its like this because each character has there own story, you cant just leave your story and join a friends. Makes sense
Me and my friends will (hopefully) play this together at launch. None of us ever played these DnD games ever before so it should be interesting.
I am so excited to play a static with my friends!
An RPG ... with multi-player?! Did I wake up in 2003?
Plan on playing it day one with my wife. We only have one ps5, so I’m so glad they implemented split screen

For multiplayer Can you bring a leveled up character that you created into someone game? Do you have to start a brand new one from scratch?

Are you able to have a single player game alongside a multiplayer game??? I wanna play the game by myself whenever I want, but at the same time I wanna play with my friend when they are available
I'm playing single and multiplayer with my wife. My wife is doing the same. We created a character in each's party and occasionally hop into each other's games to play them. A way to try alts without having to replay the whole game.

is there any way to use my current character from my own playthrough in a multiplayer world with my friends? or do i have a make a new character from scratch? i cant just use my current character? the whole thing seems super confusing
if i want to make a copy of my current character (just race/ class/ looks wise) i have to literally just build the character again? spent an hour on this already just the other day when i got the game myself
is there a con to playing online co op, is the story butchered slightly without the npcs and their side quests/ lore?
It is nice to see that they don't destroy single player in sake of multiplayer. :) I respect it as an SP player. :)
Hi, if me and friend begin together and each has character created. On Day 2, friend play ahead alone and progress the story first without waiting me who doesn't log in. On Day 3, is it possible for me to log in to join friend on his progressed?
This game literally convinced my old man DM and several DND friends to finally get next gen consoles, anyone that enjoys DND should invest in this, Larian doesn’t disappoint and their innovation in RPGs is nigh constant, being able to get together as a DND group when some of the party is sick or only available from home will be massive in this day and age, it’s hard to get a group together but having something more accessible like this makes it far far easier to play.
Can’t wait to dive in.
Y'all don't have PCs? You get the game several weeks earlier if you do
@@rileymcphee9429 Pfft, I don’t have $5000 to drop on a whim, and neither do most people, PC gaming just isn’t as easy to get people to buy into, especially when you can get Gamepass on Xbox and have the majority of big releases free or cheap, maybe if the economy evens out but for now I’ll sit on the couch, PLUS IT HAS COUCH COOP 🥰

ever since the dark urg i have been super interested in seeing a good aligned main character encounter a dark urg co op player and seeing if their dialog conflicts ! im going to be honest i don't want PVP but the most interesting part of playing dnd with friends is the dialog and role playing and i feel pc games just have not nailed it !
Maybe they will do an arena or something in the future, if not, the modders will
from what i’ve experienced, i played dark urge warlock with a friend playing paladin (paladin ‘i can fix her’ mentality while trying to damage control constant murder rp) and we had to do most of the rp on mic, doesn’t seem like there’s too much character on character interaction with the multiplayer, which is a shame but still fun!
Will it be possible to play a full-coop playtrough with one friend and both can controll 2 characters? Or will the host have control over 3 chars and the "guest" only his character?
Certainly wish I had someone to do a "from scratch" coop campaign playthrough of this for my very small channel. Sounds like a blast!
Isn't everyone starting from scratch on release?
@@roxasreturns2183I believe they are referring to a group of customs that agree to play on stream at a set time.

I just have a question if for example a friend of mine hosts a game and i join with my own character so it would be 2 companions, do my companions also level up ?
For example if i play sometimes with my friend sometimes alone, would be good if the level ups for my companions and my main character are simultaneously
Or is there just a level for your own character and your companions are automatically the same level as your main character?
Does this even work ?
Or do you have to make a different campaign for solo and for online?
So companions level up with the host it looks like, but characters or real players level up from being there when the xp is earned
I want to play this game on Playstation 5 with two friends and my wife. Can me and my wife both play with our own characters on the same Playstation 5 and TV? So co-op + multiplayer? 5:46 would I want PVP arenas in the game? Well sure, why not? But the thing is, though I haven’t tried it yet, I’m sure you and a friend could just decide to engage in PVP anywhere if you wanted.
But perhaps an arena could be a fun place to recruit a future companion?
Hey. Thanks for the video. Sorry if I missed this but if I play with one friend do we each control one of the NPC characters? So basically each play 2 characters?

i wish there would be transmoging in it or just having the option of choosing your armors look like you can discribe it in a d&d session
Sorry just to confirm...if me and my mate buy this game start it together same day creating our custom characters we cannot finish the story together ? So if he always joins my game when we finish the game only i technically have finished it, meaning he gets no story trophies/achievements or story progression nothing ?
And if i can't play cause im busy he can't continue and do side quests or explore alone, then when I come back we just continue the main story?
For example is it like the borderlands games where you do main story together and I (the host) leave to go bed, other players can continue playing side quests leveling up and that not doing story missions, then when I come back we continue the story.
Or is it like we do 10 story missions together I go off-line, does he lose all those 10 missions we did together, so if he wants to go do side missions in his own game while im not there, all those missions we did are gone for him in his game if he decides to play alone...if so that's shit as and we won't be getting it...could anyone please confirm for us
Thanks

does it matter who hosts a co-op campaign? are there any benefits to being host? will npc's affinity only be focused on the host, or can a npc like one play and despise the other? I basically just want to know if control and interaction with the world/characters/story is equally shared amongst all players.
Yeah each player makes their own decisions and although some things could affect everyone in some way because it could change the course of the story for all, the affinity is just for the person who did the thing if that makes sense
