So many comments have this song and its meaning wrong. Burns is referring to the 31 Members of the SCOTTISH Parliament who sold out to the English in 1707 with The Act Of Union. The " Rogues" received land, money, and other considerations" for their treachery. The Act Of Union ended Scotland's independence. Hence Burn's " a parcel of Rogues in the nation"
Never forget that Rabbie Burns was Anti-Union to the very bone... This rendition of Parcel O'Rogues is wonderfully moving. He was a bit more complex & at times hypocritical than you make out. That's what makes him widely appealing. He was no martyr for any cause, but espoused several.
Many ambitioys young Scotsmen from modest backgrounds joined the local masonic lodge on those days, to be fair. It was a way of networking. As a lowly tenant farmer, he maybe wouldn't have become a published writer without those connections.

I see no reason to disbelieve the endurance of this ability after independence,. Indeed the liberation and energy involved in liberty should guarantee prosperity. Perhaps not mansions for all, but neither should we fear slums. We can do better than that.

That's just ridiculous. I'm both patriotic, and nationalistic. My country has been denied "nationhood" for the past 300+ years, and it has been my goal to help regain our nation since as far back as I can remember. That doesn't make me racist. Kelly sings it like a young angry man would sing it and they are singing it like older wistful men. Brilliant, same words but approaching it from a different angle.
Judging by a lot of the comments here, people are misunderstanding this song: the nation in question is Scotland, not England, and the rogues are the Scottish establishment. Burns wasn't blaming the English in any way, but the Scots who sold out to them. Like so many of Burns' works this is more socialist than nationalist.
Alba and England had combined the crowns and had the same king in 1606 a but tensions arose when England wanted to appoint a Hanoverian Sophie to the throne while the Scots wanted a different king. England also relied heavily on Scottish soldiers to help her fight her wars, and was terrfied Scotland/Alba would align themselves with the French. Thusly Alba was tricked, bribed, bullied you name it into signing the Act Of The Union.
I certainly hope you are right. I'm an American, and we've deteriorated so far that many of our so-called free elections are won by the person who spends the most money. It is this way for Scotland: Who cares what might lie under the North Sea? It is not important. What is important is this. Scotland has about five and half percent of the UK population, pays about 8 percent of the taxes, and gets about 4 percent of the benefits. Westminster makes a huge profit having Scotland in the UK, so they are prepared to spend a huge amount of money to keep that asset. Some have said that an independent Scotland does not make sense because it is too small. Look at the world. The countries that cause the most suffering in the world are all large. Small countries are the only kind that make sense. I hope that if the vote is Yes that I will be able to afford to emigrate. And aye, Alba gu brath.

Independence yes. But not shackled to even bigger bunch of Bastards in Brussels. They will dictate to us all. Selling us to Brussels isn’t independence. Go and look at Scotland’s story. Picts, Scots, Ancient Britons, Norse, Danish, would any of those groups would sell us to Brussels?. Would Kenneth MacAlpine? Would the Kings of Dalraida before him? Would the Kings of Strathclyde? Would the Kings of Alba/ Pictland?. Would all those who fought The Norse?. Who fought the Angles?. Who fought the Norse? Who fought the Romans?. No I don’t think so?. Be independent. That doesn’t mean to hand my country over too Brussels and a European Empire formed by Surviving Nazis big names and Communists. It isn’t independence. It’s just your hatred of England. The new way forward...localisation in a globalised world will come and Scotland shall be independent again...not only that but more independence to communities within Scotland as Scotland is a varied country itself :D
As an American that has lived in Scotland for the last 3 months, doing research for a graduate paper on Scottish Nationalism, I would love to see Scotland become independent from the UK. However I just don't feel the will is there, most people I've talked to seem apathetic, and could give or take independence, and everyone else seems to think economically Scotland could not stand on its own, I disagree with the economic bullocks, business is open and I've been supporting it. Saor Alba!
Here in Canada we have a coterie of pro-American politicians and corporate heads who'd sell us out in a minute if given the chance to turn their coats. I love this song, but it was best sung by Joe MacFadden many years ago on Liam Clancy's TV show. He sang it with gusto and a bit of anger to the accompaniment of his Celts' whistles, pipes, concertinas and mandolins. You could picture a gathering of horseman converging for battle or a raid! Magic!
Well, I'm an American, but I do love and respect Canada - and wince - can't fault the Canadians that talk of the "vile Yankee Beasts to the South" - I do live among a Parcel O'Rogues, it sure seems that way lately.
I hope your compulsory history lessons in Scottish schools will include 'the massacre of Glencoe' also by the Corries, the massacre of Scotts by Scotts, and under the most shameful of circumstances. This is the legacy of folk songs, they cant be stopped, and they remember things, lots of things, so you will have to be very selective in which songs you use to educate your kids, so nothing will have changed.
@kendosendo English is the dominant language because it was forced on the population of Scotland, The English made a concerted effort to rid Scotland of Scots and Gaelic. I would hope an independent Scotland would foster the Gaelic and Scots languages. Alba gu bràth is Gaelic for Scotland forever.
No matter what happens after..I've yet to see a country escape English Colonization and regret their independence. Even India. Even the West Indies. Alba Gu Brath. What sword couldna conquer gold has taken.
@kos Also in the 1950's (in my lifetime although I was very very young) the Queen was coronated yet the Scottish coronation she needed to undertake in Alba at the time was performed behind closed doors because the government at the time stated that "We don't want to acknowledge the fact Alba is a separate kingdom with their own traditions".
evenly and thinly over the country then it isn't counted as far as seats go. That is why we had a referendum within the last year to see if people wanted to change it. The Lib Dems within the UK as a whole are handicapped with the current system. Labour within Scotland have normally benefited from it as their support tended to be concentrated in the industrial Lowlands giving them lots of seats - far more than their share of the vote.
It is worth remembering it works both ways. After the union of the crowns in 1703(not shure) a Scottish king sat on the throne. I grant you its quite an anglocentric syistem, but that reflects the demographic of England to Scotland 10:1. At the end of the day countrys need to come together to go forward, not separate.
Nah saxon more like .. The vikings were everywhere ireland Scotland England Wales to name but a few ... the English were actually germanic people.. The Scots be more Geals like the irish ..
The Corries used to be three and made at least one LP as the Corrie Folk Trio and another as The Corrie Folk Trio with Paddie Bell. Just for your information, mate. That would be in the 1960's. Have a look at the Corries website.
@Chomuno Before the act of the Union that submitted Alba to English dominion the "old" original Scottish Parliament had full control of all affairs across the country of Scotland then known as "The Kingdom Of Scotland" or in Gaelic "Rìoghachd na h-Alba".
@kos "Hostory" was a mistake that I failed to notice and should have read History. As for Gaelic being spoke in the lowlands I presume that you have heard of the now defunct Lowland Gaelic or Galwegian Gaelic which died out sometime between the 1700's and 1800's? The Gaelic spoken now should always be termed Highland Gaelic.
SAOR ALBA! I hope that Alba throws off the English oppressors soon and gains independence. This songs is about the Scottish traitors who were bribed by the English to dissolve the Parliament of the Kingdom Of Scotland and get Alba to pass the Act Of The Union and not to the English as many seem to think.
@kos You stated in a previous post that many SNP supporters are wrapped up in pointless centuries old feuds and challenged me to make a case for independence without resorting to English bigotry, my point is that most SNP supporters want Scotland to be an independent nation again not based on centuries old feuds like culloden etc but in order that Scotland finally gets a government she votes for and can finally control all her own resources like any other country.
@Janco6 It's not English gold anymore, it's Scottish oil. The gold is flowing south. Everyone seems to still think that Sotland is still a poor nation. "Keep your poverty!" Say Thatcher, Blair, Brown, Cameron and Clegg, "But share your wealth."

Burns Definitely knew how to get to the crux of a matter, without too many words! Says it all
Farewell to all our Scottish fame
Farewell our ancient glory
Farewell even to our Scottish name
Sae fam'd in martial story
Now Sark runs over the Solway sands
And Tweed runs to the ocean
To mark where England's province stands:
Such a parcel of rogues in a nation!
What force Argyle could not subdue
Through many warlike ages
Is wrought now by a coward few
For hireling traitor's wages
The English steel we could disdain
Secure in valour's station
But English gold has been our bane:
Such a parcel of rogues in a nation!
I would, or I had seen the day
That treason thus could sell us
My auld gray head had lain in clay
Wi' Bruce and loyal Wallace!
But pith and power, till my last hour
I'll make this declaration
We were bought and sold for English gold:
Such a parcel of rogues in a nation!
In the second stanza, the first line reads, "What force or guile could not subdue"

I grant you its quite an anglocentric syistem, but that reflects the demographic of England to Scotland 10:1. At the end of the day countrys need to come together to go forward, not separate.
still relevant today
@kendosendo the majority Scots are descended from the Celts and the English are descended from the Vikings.

Millions stand with you, Allen. It's coming yet... for a' that!
Alba Gu Brath!!
Helping bring Independence to Scotland?
Is that before or after you take the Ring to Mordor?
This lands sacred
Still as relevant today as it was 300 years ago.
alba gu brath, nae union. saor alba.
@keekabo southern scotland spoke strathclyde welsh as well lol....so yes look to future
SAOR ALBA! I hope that Alba throws off the English oppressors soon and gains independence. This songs is about the Scottish traitors who were bribed by the English to dissolve the Parliament of the Kingdom Of Scotland and get Alba to pass the Act Of The Union and not to the English as many seem to think.
Yes just yes come on let's do it
@kos You stated in a previous post that many SNP supporters are wrapped up in pointless centuries old feuds and challenged me to make a case for independence without resorting to English bigotry, my point is that most SNP supporters want Scotland to be an independent nation again not based on centuries old feuds like culloden etc but in order that Scotland finally gets a government she votes for and can finally control all her own resources like any other country.
I was going to write something about this song, but hafpipe's comment says it all.
Saor Alba!
the lament for the death of a nation
@Janco6 It's not English gold anymore, it's Scottish oil.
The gold is flowing south.
Everyone seems to still think that Sotland is still a poor nation.
"Keep your poverty!" Say Thatcher, Blair, Brown, Cameron and Clegg, "But share your wealth."
@DrunkOnScotsWhisky Or in Scots: "Kinrick o Scotland" ;). Thank you for your answer!
ps: If I live over here on "Indigenous" land's, I think it wise to know they're story in every detail! They fought here aside Highlander's to keep that Yankee creature away! Long Live The Brave Name of (Joseph Brandt)! Mohawk hero of the 1812-15 war!
