I remember hearing this sung on Liam Clancy and Tommy Makem's TV show in Canada back in the 1970s by a Scottish folk group and it had a definite gallop to it as though a group of armed horsemen were riding off to raid the border.

23/11/22 - The day Scotland found out the union we entered in 1707 was not a voluntary one. The hawk has revealed the poor bird has been eaten.
I got to know (and love) this song through Steeleye Span's distinctive rendition on the eponymous album. This is the first time I have heard it in a more traditional, straightforward performance, and it is equally as powerful and beautiful here.

I assume the one you mean is the head portrait of Daniel Defoe who was a paid agent of the English government, sent to Edinburgh to send back intelligence on how Scottish nobles were likely to vote after debating the Act of Union. The image before is "Bonnie Dundee" falling to a musket ball at Killiecrankie; the one following Defoe is the chest that was used for storing the money that used to compensate (bribe) Scottish nobles who had lost their family fortunes by backing the Darien scheme.

r jones I appreciate the goodwill that lies behind your comment, but, with respect, I think modern-day Scottish nationalism is not really about nostalgia. It's more about how the Scottish people and their aspiratioms can be accorded adequate recognition and representation as part of the United Kingdom.
When I grew up, it was "Great Britain" and the vast majority of Scots had no big problems being part of it, largely, I suppose because they voluntarily accepted their role and status out of self-interest .(On the other hand, I believe that all Scots must have at some point questioned whether their forefathers had lumbered them with a raw idea from 1707, down to 1914 (my estimation). One concrete example, shared by the Northern English would be unemployment and poverty, military service, or emigration, lasting down to the 1960s-70s and to still to some extent ongoing. Care to state a preference for those options?
I would argue that it was Margaret Thatcher's industrial and social reforms that deliberately broke all the meaningful"British" inks and ultimately transformed the political landscape. She allocated North Sea Oil revenue to welfare, e.g. disability benefits, to enable the transition. As part of embracing post-Cold War global capitalism Blair's New Labour applied the same tactic to the expansion of higher education in order to disguise a level of youth employment that would blight a generation's life prospects. None of this was accompanied by any significant reviival of economic activity or physical renewal in economically depressed communities that should have been especially targeted as potential beneficiaries of the oil revenues. Scotland's relationship with the rest of Britain simply grew more and more meaningless to more and more Scots who saw their world collapsing about them (an experience shared by many of their English counterparts too, of course). English conservatism, via Thatcher-Major-Blair (sic), reaped what it sowed. How can its supporters be at all surprised or complain if Scotland is less psychologically integrated and more institutionally alienated within Britain than ever?
And where is this "Britain" except in the mind of Sikhs, Pakistanis, West Indians etc. of the old empire? And where are the "English" to whom I keep referring? Do they still exist?
