  • We can often tell when a doe is pregnant with three fawns. This was the case with Susie. She was huge, and in the last days before the fawns were born, she was mostly exhausted, and spent hours just laying around.
Marlis saw Susie in the side yard about an hour or so after two fawns were born. Susie was still eating the afterbirth, as is their custom, but at one point, she was also eating what looked like the insides of an animal. It is rare, but it has been recorded that a doe will eat a stillborn fawn. Does always eat the afterbirth. They desperately need the protein, but they also make sure there is nothing left on the ground that might attract a predator.
Here's a story we think is about that:

We still don't know what Susie was eating. If anyone has an idea, please share.
For cuteness overload... see this video we posted a couple days ago of the full encounter between Marlis and Susie's new fawns: • Brand New Fawns! Only ...

It's amazing how they trust you.
Usually nothing gets by the mother.
Glad the new ones already know you just after a few hours in this world.

That doe really trusts you, I don’t think this would be a very common site where the doe has her babies so close to you, and allows her babies to walk up to you at so early in their lives. Very very rare.

True. Our neighborhood deer have gotten quite used to humans over the decades, but Susie is an exception. She was also born near our house, so she has known us her whole life. A lot of times the older deer will really trust us.

Susie really sees you as guardians against predators. She feels safer around you and your home, sir.

it is remarkable that her trust is so high, must feel incredible to have a friendship with animals so innately scared of us

Mama's just cleaning up...whether it is placenta or otherwise she knows best!

Susie would eat the placenta because it contains nutrients that are good for her. The nutrients would then be passed on to the fawns through her milk.

Almost every mammals eat their placenta. Even we _H. s. Sapiens_ once had wide tradition of eating it. I think the owner of this channel is more sensitive than average viewers.

Did they ever find out what Susie was eating? It looks like the remains of a small animal.

Deer clean up all evidence of the birth, recycling the nutrients in the process!
