  • One of the keyboards I can hardly imagine ever getting rid of, been meaning to do a bit on it for awhile but could never find the right angle, it just does so much.
    Watching now, after rendering, the zoomed in view of the controls is a bit out of focus, if I plan on doing that, I'll look into my options to record in a higher quality on the camera.
    I left in more than normal flubs, because they're funny.
    Following up soon with a less-talking walkthrough of the built in prophet patches, stay tuned.
    This was the 4th attempt at recording this, trying to tighten it up each time, and its STILL 40 minutes and I feel like there was plenty left out.
    I still don't feel like I gave ring mod a fair shake, and there's an insane diversity of analog patches I didn't have time to demo.
    A few things I should've highlighted but didn't:
    -Oscillator sync
    -The insane range available on the second oscillator
    -LFO shapes and their insane range
    -The dx7 imitating power of combining FM with extremely high LFO rates
    -Loads of others
    I intentionally left out the other products in the Lead line, there are enough differences that I would rather not touch on it without first hand experience.
    Appreciate the time, thanks for watching.

    I bought a Prophet 600 for $200 in 1995 when digital synths were hot and analog was passe. Still have it and love it. I bought a Nord Rack 2 in 2016 for $400 when analog was hot and digital was passe. The (anti-)trend is your friend for synth deals!

      Bargains! When digital synths were hot in the late 80s I bought an SH-101 £78, MC-202 £120, TR-606 £120 and a Pro-One for £125. Shame I didn't get the TB-303 for £120 at the same time. I paid a ridiculous price in the mid noughties for a DX7S and a D50, I think it was in the region of £200 each. Bargains are to be had when you buck the trend.

I find that CZcams lacks a lot of "overview" and "How-To" info for the NL2 due to the synths age, its mainly NL A1 and NL4 content out there, so Thank You so much for posting this!

    1. All continuous parameters (!) can be made velocity sensitive.
    2. You can create a morph between two sounds.
    That means:
    play a sound - enter morph edit mode - move all knobs as you like - exit morph edit mode - morph between the sounds.
    Think about filters/ADSR/LFOspeed/FM/whatever all at the same time morphing to another sound.
    You can do this with all 4 sound slots independently - at the same time. (!!)
    It has a control pedal jack for this purpose. ;-)
    That's mindblowing.

      @@Fortreeyseven if you like the monologue and are comfortable working with it, minilogue would be a short leap.
      Alternatively, something different (deepmind!) could help you get used to programming in a different architecture.
      To pinpoint it, I find myself playing with the oscillators a lot on the Minilogue, monologue, & prologue, where on the deepmind there aren't as many options there, and I end up defining the character of my sound with other options.

      I'm in a indie/postpunk band and owned a the following synths over the past five years: Nord Lead 2x, Deepmind 12, Prophet 6, prophet rev 2, ob6, juno 106, model d, and poly d. Of these I still have the ob6 and juno 106. I only got rid of the nord though because my bandmate has a nord stage 3, which has a Nord lead A1 in it. The lead is a great synth and imo one of the best and most flexible synths you can get under $800. I got my 2x a few years ago used for 650 and it was my goto synth for a couple years. I would take it over a deepmind any day. It's not a real analog, but nords cut through the mix very well and have a sound all their own. Much of the Killers' Hot Fuss album was made with a nord lead 2 and a microkorg. So it all depends what you need, but Nord is a great company that makes very solid performance keyboards. I never had any issue with it. I was underwhelmed by the nord wave 2 (for that price you should save and get a used stage 3 or 2), but ya if you can find a nord lead, lead 2, or ideally 2x for 600-700 and that's your price range, go for it.

Nord 2 and G1 have a tasteful balance of analog with a hint of plasticky that is a classic. Last, Nord 3 has also a pass for some sounds, but it is not as well rounded as its converters have some unmusical blurry ugliness to avoid in the low end.

Imagine having the layering system and multiple outputs of a nord lead with the engine, connectivity, and modulation bay of a microfreak. Just hook up a decent sequencer and you’ve got a groovebox with an insane level of customizability.

    I sold my Nord Rack 2x half a decade back. It's not a bad synth so if one can get it for cheap maybe it's worth it. Would have to be cheap though. Imho i rather like the new hybrid synths, that's the right approach. It doesn't have to be all analog, for example, wavetables are very interesting and versatile oscillators but we can't really make analog wavetable oscillators, only really simple ones. But we can make a digital wavetable oscillator that can oscillate however we want it to oscillate, and we can hook that up to analog filters, for example ;-) The Nord Lead however only has basic analog waveforms though. It is a virtual analog in every sense of the word, a digital synth that wants to be analog and tries as hard as it can, but then i'd just rather have the real deal. Today you can buy a true polyphonic analog synth such as the deepmind for less than a third the price that the Nord Lead 2 went for back in the days. VAs aren't relevant for todays synthmanufacturers to concern themselves with imho.

    • @JorbLovesGear
      @JorbLovesGear  Před 3 lety

      Good points! I agree that the market today is much friendlier to true analog.
      As far as modern VA, what about implementations like the cobalt 8, or skulpt? I think those are great examples of what a modern VA can look & sound like.

    • @RadekPilich
      @RadekPilich Před 3 lety

      I think it's (Nord Rack 2x) interesting synth for today's trend of dawless jamming / composing. You have up to four (poly)synths in one box. Add a few more (groove)boxes and you are good to go for quite complex compositions.

      @@JorbLovesGear I bought a Modal CraftSynth a year or two ago and I returned it just in a week. The physical dimensions are fantastic, the sound engine seems powerful, the sound is ok but I found it painful to tweak and it has a really poor quality of rotary encoders (even though they might be durable as they say). Maybe using iPad is a game changer here, don't know. I think Skulpt is the same as CraftSynth but polyphonic and with a bit larger size. If you are going to give it a try I'd recommend to allow yourself a space for stepping back and returning (could be relevant to buying used etc).
      Thanks for the video on NL2 btw, I just bought it and I find it fantastic. Your video was helpful in learning about couple of tricks with it . Cheers!

    • @mortenrobinson
      @mortenrobinson Před 3 lety

      @@RadekPilich sure that's true. Digital will always have a big advantage in that area. It's just a lot cheaper and also easier to implemenent lots of features, polysynths, digital effects and stuff like that when it's all software. In analog on the other hand, if you want to make an analog polysynth, you basically have to copy the entire circuit of the synth for every voice you need, so it quickly becomes an expensive ordeal. A 16-voice polysynth for instance will basically have 16 monosynths inside it. I'm very much drawn towards the Elektron Analog Four at the moment, considering picking up a second hand unit :-D I think it allows for 4 tracks each with 4 voice polyphony or something like that :-)
