Thank you so much. Funny any time and interesting seeing Ian a little more vital. He is still great but 30 years ago I was more vital! This for a Canadian is also history and increases my understanding of England which I always like to read about, visit, and see TV programs from
Hi there hero, just watched three back to back, was curious I hadn't seen them (you are so good!) so I checked community and your post explained it all. Fantastic, very well done. I laughed out loud tonight, haven't done all week . . . p s did Jimmy Mulville leave at roughly the same time as Angus? His name disappears from the credits at some stage and Jo Bunting's name seems to then appear when the guest hosts came in, I worked at a radio station with Jo (and Chris Morris knew you'd like to know!). I appreciate Angus even more now. And you and all your painstaking work, thanks again, best wishes, Frances
Hi.That's a very interesting question. From what I can see is that he left the show for a while and then came back again in 1998 and left completely in 2002 .Jo started working as the producer of this show in 2005 so you're right on this one!
@@abitmoredeayton Thanks! Well, well, well, both around the same time, bet he rated Angus. Though being the genius in charge, he maybe had the power to keep him but didn't . . . Ah well, I'll never know so will leave it now. Just watched Bill Deedes and Will Self, lots of laughs!
@@francessquid7457 There was a rumour that Jimmy fell out with Angus for some reason (I think it was something to do with not wanting to be friend with the alcoholics and druggies.See also: Jimmy Mullvile and Rory Mcgrath) and the scandal was the perfect way to eliminate him.
@@anonUK much of Carla Lane's output is lost to history, so I can't really judge. I don't remember Butterflies being particularly funny, and I can't remember enough about Bread, but I definitely thought the Liver Birds was better than Chelmsford 123. This is all a matter of opinion, of course. I think it's fair to say that none of these sitcoms was particularly special.
Steve Fry certainly used a lot of cocaine and he freely admits it but it is a little irritating when Ian makes a big deal of it. 99% of the time I find Ian well-informed and articulate and funny, but it's a little much when he makes this point about Stephen when that man has done so much fine work in writing, reading, acting (Jeeves, etc.) and humour and presenting on panel shows. Odd
A very good episode with guests who can pull their weight. These old episodes are much funnier than the later ones. Its interesting that at this point neither Merton nor Hislop are constantly attacking Deayton (just Ian screaming at Bremner's joke about Deayton's career). Also Merton is not visibly bored and irritated by the programme. I think the series went downhill because of Merton's constant harrassment of Deayton which was mostly very boring to watch, and Merton's evident boredom and disinterest in the show, which is also very boring to watch. It was Merton who should have been replaced, not Deayton. Can the producers seriously not find a single comedian who can replace Paul Merton?
Merton's bad humor and hostility are very evident in some episodes. I'm always amazed at how AD managed to carry on and keep the conversation flowing. Proof of his talent.

Thanks for posting
"can we just ask if you're taking drugs, Angus?"
My only previous experience of Rory McGrath was on QI, so it's nice to see him here not being an insufferable bore.
Stephen Fry ended up being the last person to be awarded Pipe Smoker of the Year in 2003
which is odd, because i thought he didn't like a good rough shag?
I love the Fawlty Towers references.
11:55 And we thought Florida Man stories were a 21st Century phenomenon.
Amazing foreshadowing, Ian asking Angus if he is taking drugs
Ken wasn’t in bed with Edwina Currie-that was John Major 😆
Wish he was on this show now! 2022
Same 2023
It is nice to know when your bus is coming , works so well in Taiwan !

@@francessquid7457 Yes! It's alright for you to be obsessed about this.He departed on Oct 2002.

AD to be brought back! No one does it better, let's be honest.
What's up with Ken's mic?
It's not just Ken's mic, it's both Ken's and Paul's. Weird.
Criticism of Carla Lane's sitcom output from the man behind Chelmsford 123? Surely not.
Deeply flawed as it was, it's still a lot funnier than most of Carla Lane's output.

Ian is a brilliant man, and is a gift to the nation, but he does seem awfully blinkered in this non-issue.
McGrath and Livingstone ... talk about an accretion disk of insufferable crashing into the singularity. Wow.

You are wrong and I love Paul Merton on Just A Minute.

Rory *McGrath* not Rory Bremner.
