@@soxfan182 how about hardening targets like schools? I'd say that's an infinitely more valuable solution than merely reducing the number of legally owned firearms. Banks, courthouses and other government buildings shouldn't be better protected than our schools. Especially since citizens are REQUIRED BY LAW to release their children into the care of the state when they go to school. A state or local government that neglects to adequately protect the kids entrusted to them should be liable the same way negligent parents are.

The back end where the guy does the shooting. What about limiting the number of guns you can have? This guy bought two AR-15s on his birthday. Why does anyone need two of one type of weapon. I’ve understand needing a pistol vs shotgun vs rifle but there’s no need to own two of the same type of gun. That would address part of the front end of the problem.

      @SSPspaz Před 2 lety

@@soxfan182 there actually was a Republican-sponsored bill to fund better school security proposed in the House weeks ago, but Chuck Schumer shot it down saying that it'd never pass the Senate without any gun control measures in place. So the bill was abandoned.
To turn your argument on its head, why would anyone need to be on multiple social media platforms? Why would anyone need more than one house, or more than one car? Why would someone need more than one mobile device, bank account, or credit card? Our society is built upon the rights of life, liberty and property. Exactly where does the Constitutional authority come from for the state to arbitrarily tell citizens how much of something they can have? That's bullshit and it would rightfully be struck down by the courts in short order. Especially when dealing with a specifically enumerated right like the right to bear arms.
And no, your solution wouldn't address the front end of the problem because it wouldn't have done a single thing to stop the shooter anyway. Unless you think he *actually* needed two different rifles to murder some kids helplessly locked in a classroom. He only used one of the rifles in the shooting in the first place.

But Europe isn't, France has firearm related terrorism, and I'm sure with the state of the US border they would see an influx of firearm smuggling if they were outright banned for law abiding citizens. The point is, criminals by definition don't care about the law. They will find means of accessing weapons to do what they need to do. The Virginia Tech shooter used a 9mm and a .22 handgun to kill 32 people. Others have made homemade bombs, others have used their vehicles to kill more than a few. Do you honestly think removing one particular kind of weapon will stop an insane murderer? What about multiple security cameras and motion sensors at every school. We have the tech to do it and the tech to use auto locking systems in the same security Office in each school with an armed security guard to monitor them. We pay billions in school taxes each year so use it to protect the kids instead of giving billions to Ukraine! Simply Safe can protect millions of homes and businesses remotely and our Government can't? Face it people, the Democrats want total gun control and confiscation and they can't get that unless these school shootings continue so they will do nothing but say that it's the gun owners and the Republicans fault and try to gain political points.

    • @aja23136

Virginia Tech shooting happened across an entire campus and spanned nearly 2.5 hours. Do you think if he entered a single classroom in a school he would be able to inflict the same amount of damage than if he had an AR-15? There's a reason why we don't send cops/military into close quarters with just a pistol. The Buffalo shooting lasted only a few minutes and that guy got over 10 people, the Christchurch one he got over 50. Meanwhile the Brooklyn subway shooting the guy only had a pistol and no one died. Yes, removing this one type of weapon (or at least making it more significantly more difficult to acquire) will limit deaths. Most democrats don't want total confiscation. You should be able to buy a low capacity pistol as you do today, however an AR-15 should be lumped in with automatic weapons requiring a special license and additional training. An 18 year old in high school shouldn't be able to buy 2 online.

Pistols in the military are sort of a prestige weapon, rarely issued except for drivers, gate guards and officers. The biggest drivers for pistol adoption were for example the trench raiders in WWI, tunnel rats in Vietnam, and now the global war on terrorism because of the need to enter buildings and tight rooms.
The Christchurch shooter got that many people because they got cornered, the survivors played dead when he left, and he went back in to catch the people trying to flee.

I used to work at a gun range, (In Texas, as I am Texan) Owning a rifle regardless of if it is an Ar-15 or an Ak-47 is 18 and a handgun is 21 the idea being the ability to conceal the firearm. My problem with these proposed restrictions is just trying to make people feel safe as opposed to actually being safe. Gun free zones like malls and theater and such are an example of this, if a criminal wants to shoot up a theater, school or mall they are going to regardless of if they are told they would be a bad boy for doing so. The teachers should be allowed to have the option to conceal carry, and then from there be required to submit proof of sufficient training to be allowed to carry on a school grounds. Making it harder for law abiding people to get guns only affects the law abiding citizens and the criminals who want to do harm will find ways to do it, remove all guns, they will use knives and swords. Ban knives and swords and they will find another way.

A shooting in a west Texas church was prevents because one of congregate had a pistol holstered and shot the perpatrator dead. In West Virginia another church shooting was prevented because multiple people had handguns and shot scared off the suspect (before chasing him down and shooting him dead in a ditch).

Soooo the official story is that the shooter in TX turned 18 last week and immediately (legally) passed two background checks and purchased two AR15s from a licensed dealer (for about $3k) on May 17th. He then bought 375 rounds of ammunition on May 19th (I don't know how, .223/5.56 ammunition only comes in quantities that are divisible by 10 or 20). He also bought, mounted, and zeroed a red dot sight somehow as well as purchased and mounted a vertical foregrip. He also purchased several 30 round magazines and a 'tactical vest'. Once he had everything, he was able to kill 20+ people and manage to shoot an armed school resource officer, possibly three DPS officers, and a border patrol agent in the head at distance while under stress. So in one week, he taught himself how to operate the rifles, load the magazines, zero the red dot sight (without firing a shot), accomplish several reloads under stress while drawing magazines from a vest, and become such a competent shooter that he could land a headshot on responding law enforcement. The 18 year old transgender firearm novice who had never fired a gun before, bought $4k worth of gear (despite only working at Wendy's part time and coming from a poor family; so poor that he was bullied for it) and owned the rifles for less than a week and had only 375 rounds of ammunition (at least 210 of which were left in a backpack outside the school) and likely an optic that wasn't sighted in. Not saying it's impossible, but holy shit is that improbable.

I believe there is much more depression, lack of community, higher rates of bullying, isolation etc on top of the ability to access a firearm fairly easy. in other countries they might be able to get guns as well, but you see less people fall that low in society because more families are still in tacked, so someone who is getting bullied at school can still go home to a strong families structure, siblings, social events etc. Just my opinion. I mean, explain the Buffalo shooting then. An off duty cop was there, and did try to stop the shooting and was killed. It did not stop the shooting that took place there, nor did the threat of having potential concealed guns in the area stop the attacker from perpetuating the attack as they had body armor and tactical gear with them. Adding more guns here, is not the fix to all of these shootings as the vast majority are trying to kill themselves by cops in the process, so I highly suspect that they would become discouraged by having more potential guards and staff members with weapons here. Sure, maybe they would kill less people or would be stopped faster, but that doesn't fix the issue, only mitigating the damage they can cause. Giving schools ballistic blankets, bulletproof windows, metal detectors, etc. may do something, but then they will just find another place to have a mass shooting event or get more prepared with improvised explosives, or choose times like when the kids are let out of school and they are gathered in groups to get on busses. There is no way to create a perfect system here that prevents this.

What would have stopped the Uvalde shooting faster?
Force police to accept a constitutional duty to act in their oath. We had a whole mob of police in hard plate body armor with helmets and rifles STANDING OUTSIDE THE SCHOOL WHILE THE GUY WAS STILL SHOOTING.
Every single last one of those cops on scene who did not go into that school should be fired and never allowed to serve in any official office for the rest of their lives. Plain and simple. Every single cop who showed up on that scene and did not rush into that building to actively seek out and eliminate the shooter is a coward and not worthy of the authority being a cop comes with.
As it stands now, police have NO CONSTITUTIONAL DUTY TO ACT. That means they can stand there 10 feet away and watch somebody commit the horrific crime upon another person and do nothing. Sure they may get fired, but they'll get a job with another police agency real quick. Now imagine if that same officer swore an oath that said if he does not protect the public, with his life if necessary, he will be charged as an accomplice to the crime committed that he did not stop. That would solve so many problems with policing in one easy move. You would see a gigantic decline in people who become a cop just for the badge and authority but have no interest in actually defending the public who cannot defend themselves. There is no valid excuse for how the police handled Uvalde. NOT A SINGLE ONE. They should all be publicly shamed and shunned. How can they be trusted to do their job anymore? Exactly. I know the current precedent / case law establishes that police have no legal requirement to intervene in the protection of citizens, however, I don't think that should apply when it comes to public schools because parents are required by force of law to relinquish their kids into the care of the state. Seems to me that the state should be civilly and criminally liable to protect that are in their care.

Taking guns won't do anything. We need to do a deep dive into all the shooters and find out what motivated them to commit their shootings. They were probably really pissed off about something, find out what caused that to happen in that shooter's life and go about fixing it.
This shooter in Texas was an 18 year old kid who was bullied. Maybe the education system should be where we make improvements. The teachers are overworked and don't have the time or resources to give every kid the attention they need (smaller class populations would fix this). Is there a support system in place for bullied kids? How effective is it at fixing previous emotional damage and preventing future damage from occurring?
America is a great country but there are fundamental flaws in the culture that push people to lash out in explosive and violent ways. They act out when they feel they have no other feasible options left. Maybe take a deep look at the unfair treatment the common American is subjected to and tackle those injustices and maybe we will prevent future shootings from taking place. The downside to my argument is that it is a long-term solution where positive results won't be seen until 20 years later... and elections are every 4 years. They want immediate solutions and this isn't immediate. So we will either see police at school entrances for a few years or we will see no changes at all, I am calling it now.

You can't account for a maniac who thinks the appropriate response to bullying is shooting children. No amount of planning or surveillance fixes that, there will always be maniacs. The difference is most countries do not have more guns than people.

When the police refuse to help, the weapon doesnt matter. He could have gone in with a sword and shield and done just as much harm if all the police are just standing there doing nothing.

Adding steps only harms regular law abiding citizens. A school shooter won't be dissuaded by a wait period for example, but a woman that is being stalked would certainly be harmed by one.

The guys are ignoring part of the problem here, like filthy said it could be a library or a concert or a school etc, the thing these places all have in common is a large percentage of the time no one is armed, which he didn't catch on to. Evil people who do these act choose large groups of people who are most likely going to be soft targets. People who aren't armed and trained are easy to kill, simple as that. We also need more training for law enforcement and private individuals, carry guns is not enough, if you don't train with it you may as well be a soft target with a loud toy. You are your own first responder, as this event has reaffirmed, you cannot rely on the government to protect you.

I like the idea of expanding voluntary certifications to have people as certified "guards" who have extended checks and are qualified to carry pretty much anywhere, then you would reduce these soft targets because you wouldn't know who is a certified "guardian". Similar to how they are having guardians at elementary schools. The bottom line is government isn't going to protect you. nor do they have a duty to per supreme court.
