  • On December 29th 2018, Train Chamber visited Knotts Berry Farm to railfan their Ghost Town & Calico Railroad. Expecting to see D&RGW C-19 #340, the Railroad had Broke out RGS C-19 #41 for the Holiday Season. Equipped with a D&RGW 5 Chime, We follow RGS Consolidation #41 Around the park. Special Thanks to the Crew for letting me up in the cab for a little tour.
Rio Grande Southern #41 is a C-19 Class locomotive Built in 1881 But the Baldwin Locomotive works. C-19 by the D&RGW classification system denotes the wheel arrangement, "C" for consolidation, and "19" For 19000 Pounds of Traction Effort. Locomotive #41 was built for the D&RG as #409, but was sold to the Rio Grande Southern in 1916, and was renumbered to #41. In 1951 she was Sold to Knotts Berry Farm to Operate on their GT&C Railroad. There she was covered to oil, and still operates to this day.
The Ghost Town & Calico Railroad was built in 1951 and officially opened in 1952. The roster consists of two C-19 class consolidations, RGS #41 (Named Walter K.) and D&RGW #340 (Named Green River), and RGS Goose #3. The Rio Grande Southern #3 was purchased for special occasion during the off-season of the park, when hostling a steam locomotive isnt necessary. In 1973, D&RGW K-27 #464 was purchased and converted to oil, but due to clearance issues was sold to the Huckleberry Railroad where she still runs today.

What a nice video. I grew up going to Knott's and smashing pennies on the tracks. Worked a summer as a conductor on the train before my first job in my actual career and while technically we weren't supposed to do it, I couldn't say no to guests who wanted one. Would always sneak one on the track for them, or pre smash them and swap it as a magic trick for the kids. I still have my hat - had to buy it online myself because the only spare that kbf provided was too small.

Great video. Next year, 2020, I have to go visit that railroad. The only gripe I have with 41 is that there is no front coupler. Oh well.

    1. Very smooth first shot!
    2. 0:52 Wheel slip already... I remember in my CN 89 vid, 89 slipped without pulling anything.
    3. 1:19 Nice
    4. 1:33 Well thats just neat!
    5. 3:23 Jeez! Where’s the Sans?
    6. 4:06 Chama NM? Cumbres and Toltec?
    7. 4:55 ...
    8. 5:03 Again...
    9. 5:25 and again...
    10. 6:43 Train-bridge shot +490 points
    11. 7:43 Great shot!
    12. 8:41 Probably some of my favorite narrow gauge drive gear. Slightly white walled, yet smooth and simple.
    13. Nice shot! I’ll have to try more of these kind. I haven’t done many of these, but they’re fun to film.
    14. 10:30 GG #3! 😮
    15. 10:45 “WHAT IS THAT ON YOUR HAND?!” XD
    16. 11:59 Felt the warmth of the boiler?
    17. 12:40 Like that shot with the two different forms of rail transportation!
    18. 13:09 340 on the right?
    19. 14:07 “Durango” Wonder what that’s referencing...
    20. 15:35 Did one of these with 63. Well.... something like that...
    21. 17:58 Ooo
    22. 18:03 Pretty marker lights +500 points
    23. 18:11 Like how the steam us clearly outlined by some mysterious light.
    24. 18:48 Woh
    25. 20:17 Well... there’s a blooper...
    26. 20:38 Those lanterns (also called marker lights?) tho

      1. Thanks! I usually dont like to go without a tripod but i had to for this trip.
      2. Im Pretty sure oil and grease from the locomotive dripped down onto the rails... hence all the slipping around the depot area.
      3. Her cylinders are in very rough shape..... rip
      4. All you have to do is ask and they'll let you in!
5 . I think you mean sand.... but i guess they just didnt have the sanders on, even if they did i know there is sand in the engine because there was sand around the rails.
      6. These cars are Original D&RGW cars. The D&RGW named that coach Chama for the service-area of the time, now what is the C&TSRR
      7. *slip*
      8. *slip*
      9. *slip*
      10. THanks! it was a nice shot but i have to clean some dust off my lense
      11. Thanks again! I rested my camera on the fence if you couldn't tell lol
      12. Simple, Sweet, Gets the job done :D
      13. (plz insert timestamp) (Ill assume 9:07) Thanks! This shot was actually filmed right out side a service pet relief area XD
      14. Goose #3 is the only one that left Colorado
      15. "What is that on your head"****** But, its my s a n t a h a t
      16. Yes i did! In the heat of the sun it just made it warmer
      17. yee, RGS C-19 and RGS Goose
      18. Indeed, tis D&RGW 340
      19. Well like i said earlier, authentic D&RGW equipment sooooooo
      20. Its a really neat shot when they come straight at you.
      21. n i g h t

      24. *slip*

      1. Thought it may have been mounted on a gimbal if I’m honest...
      2. Oh... well that explains it
      3. oof
      4. social introvert... out of my box. Thats why you don’t see many cab stuff in my vids (I think??)
      5. Mmmmaaaaaaaayyyyybbeeeee
      10. Didn’t even notice the dust
      11. Well, now that you say that, I do notice it.
      13. Yea... 9:07. sorry...
      15. Head* Blame my hearing loss on being in the high school band...

      1. It might be the auto stabilization lense in my camera :p
      4. I'm usually like that too, but when i go to these railroads i feel like they can understand the view of a railfan. Whats the worst they can do, say no?
      5. or is it that skeletal dude from undertale
      10. The little specs really stick out to me...
      15. o o f
      18. I think they are sisters, even 41 & 340 are, 41 was just sold to the RGS and 340 wasnt, theyre both C-19s built in 1881 after all.

Great video Joe! Love the whistle on this little guy!! Not a huge fan of the new pilot on this locomotive. It looks like a pilot a switcher would have and it doesn’t even have a coupler.
