Double Din Stereo Install on 98-02 Dodge Ram

- Here is a step by step double din stereo install on my 2001 Dodge Ram using the Metra installation kit. There is a fair amount of cutting required with this installation, but overall the installation with this kit is fairly simple, especially when compared to the alternatives such as fibreglass or bondo. I highly recommend the Metra kit if you're looking to upgrade to a double din unit in your second gen Ram. See links below for the kit and the stereo I purchased. I have this same bezel kit and ran into the same top side issue. (Although I do have to trim my bottom side as my head is a true double din) Thank you for showing that it is "safe" to trim the top. This will work out well in my '01 Sport. Enjoy your tunes!

Great video, thank you. Looks like a nice blanket of snow in the background. I have a question regarding the tilting issue of headunit and topside interior dash clearance. Could you've used the upper two slots on the mounting bracket (@6:31 in video) to negate trimming the inside dash or in doing so would that comprise the exterior trim plates function?

Ebay and Crutchfield make a full replacement with a double DIN sized hole. Amazon sells a Dorman one same as the stock one if you want single DIN or stock look.

i definitely did not have to remove the top area as you stated.... I did however remove the bezel more times than i care to admit.

I ordered the metra kit for my 01 ram and I ordered the Sony xavax1000 wired them up turned on my truck and then nothing could you help me did you have to do anything special?

Thank you! It is actually stock height with the factory towing package in the back. Tires are 35x12.5R22

Do the steering wheel controls work for you? How did you connect it? do you need canbus things?
Yes the steering wheel controls worked. You just have to connect the wire from the steering wheels controls, which will be in there from factory, to the new wiring harness.
I know this is a older video not sure if you’ll get back to me but the double din model isn’t shown on the website is there a comparison to the ones on the website of Sony ya can compare to the one in the video?

Hello, You're the only other person to have the darker grey lower two-tone paint job. Do you know if our trucks are some special package that gave the darker lower two-tone?
Mine actually doesn't have the two tone paint, it's just chrome, but the SLT Laramie models came with the two tone paint.

Some of the SLT Laramie trucks had two-tone. I've got a 96 that's grey on bottom and white on top
Whats the wiring harness? Like could you show me a link cause its not the factory wiring. I have a 2001 and this is my first time putting in an after market radio. Yours just hooked right up though since you had an after market to begin with im pretty sure

So you’ll need two wiring harnesses. One comes with the Metra kit, which there’s an eBay link in the description, and the other comes with the new stereo you bought. Using the wiring colour guide that comes with the Metra harness, and the wiring colour guide that is in the stereo user manual, you’ll splice the two harnesses together. Then it’s just plug and play from there.
Where did you find the heated seat buttons?
Those are the factory Laramie heated seat switches.

I used a basic utility knife!

I am not sure of the quality of it since it is Ebay but I found one I was gonna get for my truck before just getting a single din with a pop out screen that covered where my cup holders used to be before breaking. @@azrielchavez7662 you're welcome and if you're meaning the hole on the kit, least on my 1997, my cigarette lighter would go there since where I would need to cut would cut into where its housing is. So would be the only thing I could think of on it.

I unfortunately no longer have the truck, but it did have steering wheel controls.

I no longer have the truck unfortunately, but those were just the factory laramie heated seats.

Yes, this kit is for a 7" screen.

@@Ethan-ur7qi went with a Kenwood Double din 10.1 inch floating screen instead. Much better build quality with a speaker knob. Also the Kenwood had a true HD Screen and more features(gauges, wireless apple carplay, insane audio adjustability)

That bumper is just the factory “sport” model bumper.
The website LMC Trucks is the only website that offers the sport bumpers.
The 4 gen bumper looks better then that one

Garret Godwin no you can’t because then the two mounting points where you screw the stereo to the dash (8:57) wouldn’t line up.

No it won't. The exteriors are the same but the dashes are different.

I have a 01 ram 1500 . Just bought a pioneer double din at Walmart . Hooked all the wires up . Comes on but no sound ? Please help. Plug factory back up and sound comes back on .
I would just double and triple check that you have all the proper connections in your wiring harness. Play around with the audio settings of the new pioneer unit. If nothing helps then I would return the unit and get another one, you may just have a lemon.

The dash on the 97s is slightly different, so it will not work.

My 01 ram has amps on each speaker and I'm not getting sound. Do I have to bypass the amps or get all new speakers? 🤬 Stupid design
I wouldn't have been happy needing to destroy part of my dash like that for te stereo.
I find it to be a small sacrifice for a significant upgrade.

I felt the same way, the woodgrain bezels are very hard to come by, especially in that kind of shape.
@@johndoby well, those old Rsm dashes are just cheap. If you have an old ram dash in place, it's a gold mine.
