Hey guys, this was filmed just a couple days ago. My Europe trip is over, I spent a week in California and then flew somewhere new (hint: it's cold and rainy). I filmed an awesome video about the flight getting here, edited it and then tried to upload it last night, but the internet is crazy slow and it didn't upload even waiting all night. Hopefully I'll find better internet elsewhere.
This video was filmed with my new camera, the Canon G7X Mark II, so a big thanks to everyone who donated to make that happen. Let me know your thoughts on the video quality. I'm still learning about the camera but for one thing I figured out how to zoom it out a little so that it isn't so close to me while filming myself, so that helps a lot. Also it seems to be really sensitive to wind noise. So I ordered some micromuffs to have mailed to me to put on the microphones, which hopefully will lessen the wind noise. But it'll be a couple weeks before I receive those. Also, this video ended abruptly because it stopped recording suddenly, maybe because it will only record a specific amount of time at once. But I was wrapping it up anyway at least.

I have many good memories of Berkeley. I'll share a few. There is a Irish pub on Shattuck called The Starry Plough and they had poetry night every Wednesday and the poetry slam was called Berzerkley. I went almost every week. It was great being in Berkley hanging out with friends when I was young & broke because those cheap slices of pizza were readily available right there on Telegraph Ave. BTW we came from the South Bay and would just get off on Broadway and shoot up where it would change to Telegraph and just enjoy people watching on our way up. I went to Skyline High on a day trip with my high school and it was pretty hood man lol This was probably in 94' or 95' tho. I once dated a chick that was going to Berkley and stayed at those dorms. All the clubs were really cool too, I miss it! Thanks for the vid, safe journey man...
I remember back in the day when as students I a buddy were propositioned by two hookers around 9 PM right outside of the Durant Hotel. Ahhh...the memories...and we did not even have enough money for a six pack between us.

Hi Gabriel. Thanks for sharing about your youthful days - definitely can relate from my youth in Southern California. On the new Canon camera, the picture is very crisp, however the lack of stabilization is definitely noticeable on a big screen TV. The picture bounces and jitters quite a bit as you're walking. It must be instantly picking up every slight movement on your wrist as you're walking and commenting. I read some forums where they talk about how they stabilize the GX7, and it seems to involve getting another device that uses a gyro. It may be something to consider.

I went to BHS too and graduated in 2005. If I remember correctly BHS was gated sometime in 2004 but by 2005 it was already gated to help control students from skipping classes or coming in and out whenever they pleased.
Thanks for sharing this part of your story with us. I grew up in Norcal and spent a lot of time in the Bay Area so this was very nostalgic for me.

LOL! Berkeley was my hang out.I used to walk by Berkeley High and I used to live near Montclair.
I'm a huge advocate of the self haircut! I've saved a lot of money the past year! 😊 It was cool to see this area and hear the stories. I think a lot of folks who were teens in the 80s didn't categorize themselves with any particular clique or style; all of my high school friends were as if each person had all of the 5 Breakfast Club kids inside, lol. That must've been kind of hard to move schools as much as you did. Happy Travels (or, dishwashing, as the case may be right now, haha). 👍🏼✌🏼

Great video walking down memory lane! I graduated in 1990 feom lake high school in a small town called hartville, ohio. Big amish community around there. I too went to 3 different high schools. 1 in fort lauderdale florida and sebring florida. Then ended up in hartville half of my junior and then senior year. Haha. Kinda crazy! I too had a major cultural experience from one to the other. I'm in paris now where you were a few months ago! I didn't go to the hostel you mention but rather found a flat for 35.00 a night in the 10th through airbnb. About the same price give or take of a hostel but with the privacy. Got the subway pass unlimited for the week for 23.00 euro so that is working out good. Uploading more to my facebook and not as much to my youtube yet but will here shortly. Fb is just a quick real time sort of upload. Went to jim morrisons grave today. Crazy cemetery there! Oh well rambled enough. Haha. Enjoy alaska! Be safe!
Happy for you with your new camera. The image quality is good, seems like it takes a while to focus on your face which you'll work out soon. The stories you were telling us about was from your book "following my thumb". You've got some stories from that book and some were pretty funny, while some were like OMG!!

Hi Gabe, I graduated BHS '88, they became a closed campus in 94-95 I believe. I used to walk up and have pizza on Shattuck at lunch. Is your camera the g7x mark 2? Just curious have you ever thought of living in a country for 6 months or so? I think a trip back to Lisbon or Cascais would be a great place to live.
That's a trip, we were almost there the same time. I arrived fall of '88.
Gabe, I have the same camera as you do but yours seems a lot more zoomed in than mine. Did you have it zoomed in a bit by any chance?
You're right, I figured out afterwards how to zoom it out more, so that helped a lot.

No beaches there and not cheap. But pretty good for raising a family I'd say.
There's tiny little beaches down at the marina . Not the kind of beaches your probably thinking of tho. This is northern California not flat beaches like la or jersey . Lots of rocks and great whites unless you head north to stinson. Berkeley is insanely expensive becasue alot of out of town tech duche bags moved here . But insanely good food and always something to do and great weather .

Thanks. I got it in Nepal. Not sure where else to get them, but you see them available in various places in India and Nepal. It's the Hindu goddess Kali. If you search online for "Hindu god t-shirt" then maybe you'd find somewhere that sells them.

I seem to prefer these type of videos Gabe than the more recent travel guide ones for some reason ha. It's these sorts that drew me to the channel. You seem to be spending big $$$ these days. You made the big time then? By the way what was wrong with previous camera? What will be the added benefits to this new expensive camera?
Hang tight for my next ones, they'll be pretty exciting. I haven't really been spending big money, still staying in hostels or else getting cheap rooms, but I'm doing quite a bit better than a year ago, doubled my daily budget roughly so that makes a big difference. Still a long ways from being able to afford normal hotel rooms on a regular basis. As for cameras, I didn't like the $200 Canon that I bought in April, and then my GoPro died. Lots of people had recommended the Canon G7X. It's not bad but it's not up to expectations.
Hey Gabriel, is there a reason why you skipped Costa Rica in Central America? I'm planning a budget adventure trip to Central America for 10days in November and the cost of Costa Rica is starting to scare me. I hear it's more expensive than the United Stated
I was running out of money when I went to Mexico, Belize and Guatemala, so I turned around and headed back into Mexico and then flew back home. Yeah I've heard it's pretty expensive in CR. Also heard that people love it. Seems like it must be a bit cheaper than the US, especially outside of the tourist areas, but maybe not.
Great video, love the backstories. Great image quality, however when you turned it around your face never seemed to get into focus. Not sure if that can be improved/fixed, just an observation.
Yeah the Canon seems to have an issue with focusing unfortunately. Will see how much it gets in the way of things. One improvement is that I figured out how to zoom out a little more so that in the future it won't be right up in my face like that. So that should help a bit.

I've only used mosquito nets in places that provided them, I've never traveled with them. I just buy some Odomos bug repellent there and it works fairly well.

100$ a night bro? i would camp when there, wildcat canyon just over the hill from you there in Berkeley best part is it is free :) almost forgot you have to register with the DNR and it is not a privacy issue it is encase there is a wildfire etc so they can locate you or if there is an incident nearby so campus police dont shoot you lol:) i would never pay 100$ unless it included free whine or Berkeley acid as a comp and i would want a sheet of acid at that price lol. well i guess i would settle for 1 bottle of irish rose and a 10 strip < just kidding and very bad joke. I love Berkeley it is my birth place:) people there are always friendly and helpful. Posting credits to officer Nancy and Rativere hope i spelled that correctly from the UCB campus police 1989-1993 you guys rock. not only did they tell me that i could camp there but they got me registered to camp off campus when i came to the Oakland Colosseum to watch The Grateful Dead. PS Fat Slice pizza was the one that you got pizza from $1.25 for a slice of pizza on a paper plate bro, it took up the whole paper plate "How can you forget "FAT SLICE" and up the street at yogart park was the icecream with home made waffle cones:) make a layered frozen yogurt with toppings. any flavor any toppings. PS: Ignore comments below about campus police. they are just doing their job and I myself have filmed many times to this day and have never been instructed to turn off my video feed. Campus riots

I do not like this camera. Maybe it's just that you're getting use to it, but it seems too sensitive, it's too shaky, the picture is more fine-toothed, so you probably don't need to move it so much, making the imagines move too quickly to enjoy or even focus on certain things well enough. Also, your head was mostly cut off, so I'm thinking maybe you need to get more use to it. (odd to see your hair so short, but it looks good!!)
There's a feature I didn't know about in which it was zoomed in a little ways. So that made it more shaky and is why I wasn't in the frame all the way. Correcting that helped a bit, as you might notice in the video I just posted about flying to Alaska.
Gabriel Traveler takes time to learn a new camera. I think this camera might be more precise so maybe moving a little slower would help the viewers. I found the last couple videos moving too fast causing it to be a bit uncomfortable (which has nvr been the case in the past, even though others had mentioned this now and then with your old camera). It must be difficult to move the camera slower when your right there and your eyes see everything so quickly. Also, it could possibly be that I was intensely interested in the last couple videos and wanted to see clearly what you were showing. Either way.... all your videos are top notch and I usually have little to no complaints!! Thanks Gabe. Take care of yourself... ;)

Almost always. There are a few videos without it from my trip to Europe last year. Way easier as a traveler to not have to shave the whole face every day. Plus I just prefer it.
