Years before that, the secret sauce that _made_ reddit used to be that it had self-moderation figured out. Most subreddits were self-moderating just with downvote scores and arrows. Granted, people's expectations were lower & people's tolerance was higher. This was before my not liking your opinion/s-post became _words are violence,_ and a possible lawsuit, and ESG score reduction, and practically r-word. Now reddit has become digg-like, twitter-like, youtube-like in all the wrong ways. Russiagate and CIA lies and disinfo nannies (D-woke) rule the roost and are WORSE than no moderation. But you're not allowed to run the controlled experiment anymore, because "unmoderated" (=nanny-free self-moderating) subreddits get banned.

I was a reddit mod the dyslexic sub for 8 years on a 14 year old account. In January this year, I got 1 week banned for reporting a comment in /r/news; it was something I reported like months before I got banned. When I submitted a ticket to ask them why I got banned for reporting a sub rule violation to the sub mods, the admins IP and MAC address permabanned me. The reason was I committed 'multiple site rule violations and was a danger to the reddit community". Good to know me telling people about screen readers, posting dyslexia research studies and preventing scams to a disability community is a danger to the reddit community. I am surprised reddit isn't dead yet with how horrible they treat their own users.

r/new, r/politics, r/worldnews... All of these were captured by neoliberal bots by applying to be mods and then getting their bot buddies on the mod squad with them. It was a hostile takeover enmasse of all the current events and political subs. This happened within a week to about a couple months of Hillary losing to Donald Trump. So many MAC addresses and IP were permabanned. I kept the same account for several years. Then after the takeover, I got tired of changing computers, IP addresses, and user accounts. I wont go back any more. They can have their cumdumpster of a website. CZcams comments section is actually less toxic and less prone to DDOS attacks.

I’ve been on Apollo for years and I love it. I am going to be very upset if it goes away. The fact that they don’t track a ton of personal data AND allow for face-ID/PIN code locking we’re the two main reasons I bought in in the first place. The UI and 3rds party content integration were a welcome bonus that makes the official app look really poorly built.

I just looked up Imgur API pricing and the person making the complaint in the video is bending the truth. The $166 per 50m messages is correct but ignores that Imgur makes its revenue from image uploads. Let us be clear here the dev is complaining about the cost of messaging on a platform that has to make money off messaging compared to the cost of messaging on a platform that makes its money based on images. This is based on the $500/month starter api at imagur instead of the $10,000/month pro api account.
This is in relation to the blind community.
Also he compains that reddit has chosen to make its money from third party devs beciase they can't function just off the pittance of advertising revenue. Oh no!
That the developer is really complaining about is thet their business model can't sustain $2.50 per user per month in subscription cost.

As a developer I saw things going on this direction a while ago. First companies provide lots of good dev tools and integrations, usually free, along with a good core product. Then they make a boatload, get popular in the industry and neuter their products to extract as much as possible from people who used their platforms never realizing that eventually the companies would sell their data, charge them for the old features and eventually make the experience unusable. The first time I realized they weee using this model was when the Google maps API went from free to paid. Imagine all the people who used the free maps API for apps, tools and sites that were basically over a barrel to pay insane costs for data that google got using money they got from subsidies, tax breaks and government funding. There isn’t a single moral, non corrupt tech company in the mainstream, period. It’s the reason rtr is in such bad shape. It’s a cartel.

It is funny how bandwidth and hardware is cheaper than ever before, yet the fees on everything still have to go up. Reddit is attempting a pump and dump for an IPO. They saw right wing elon cutting off 3rd parties to their api and decided reddit would do the same to make money. Too bad they ignored that all moderation and the biggest users of reddit via 3rd party viewers rely on api access. Reddit is betting on a lack of alternatives to keep people coming back, it won't work. People will just figure out new places to go to, even if it requires multiple sites. Meanwhile people who used the reddit api to profit on reddit data will just datamine with screen scraping instead of paying ridiculous api prices. The whole point of the api was to reduce server load for reddit, now reddit wants to profit on their lower bandwidth api. A website is an api but preformatted, your browser is sending commands and receiving text that it displays.

Since we’re on the subject of blind users, I’ve tried to use Reddit to reach out to people in the Yu-Gi-Oh community because the company that makes the video games, I spoke to their customer service a few years ago, and the guy asked me why I would want to play Yu-Gi-Oh if I was blind and thought it was a prank call. It really does, try talking about any Fallout positively that isn't New Vegas in r/Fallout.
You can't really talk about 1 and 2 other than general story beats or more notable moments because most of the kiddies there haven't played them, same goes for the spin offs of that era. 3 and 4 get endlessly "eviscerated" by cretins who think parroting the same few "beaten-to-a-fine-pulp" points is a great gotcha. Talking about 76 gets you laughed out of the room by people who haven't even seen as much as a loading screen from the game. Any constructive criticism of Fallout New Vegas, where it falls short or it's abysmal launch, correcting or questioning the bizarre fanfictions the community has accepted as cannon about it's development gets you viterol from apologists so deep in the Kool aid their water wings aren't preventing them from going under.
It sucks when you just love the series as a whole, and want to have discussions on each games high and low points that you just simply can not do that in the subreddit about the series as a whole. You have to seek out half a dozen subreddits dedicated to each specific game, hope they aren't dead as there is only so much you can discuss about a 10-20 year old single player computer game, and hope they aren't filled with equally rabid apologists from the other end of the spectrum who where forced out of the main sub, and equally refuse to acknowledge the shortcomings of the specific sequel they centered themselves on.
Having a nuanced discussion on Reddit is like trying to pull teeth from a lion on cocaine. Sure it's possible, but you aren't coming out with all of your limbs.

It's like talking about a battery but somehow magically attached to it by some idiotic logic a apple, orange, socks, paper bag so as bunch of other unrelated things are attached, and then all these people start arguing which is more important in a topic about batteries ...

The key thing to note is that they are moving their process to match twitter's more closely, but not imgur. Why? Because both reddit and Twitter contain mass amounts of data needed to train the AI models being developed today and in the future, presumably. Imgur just doesn't contain this type of data. The people who need this data for training will probably still pay for the new fees. This isn't about killing third party apps, that's just a useful side-effect. This is one of those things where I’ve tried my best to look at everything as someone who didn’t even know of third party clients for Reddit until last year, and opted not to switch because I was used to the app by then. I’ve found most of my issues with Reddit content comes from searching for posts through Google on mobile rather than the app itself. The biggest issue is when comments won’t load, but that also occurs on Desktop (even if using old.Reddit, which isn’t going away according to devs). Ads are a pain, but I find most of them are easy to spot & they’re about as annoying as Twitters.
Now, do I think Reddit charging 3PA’s money for their API is unreasonable? No. Do I think the price they chose is too high? Yes. But that’s not the worst thing they did here. Giving these devs THIRTY DAYS notice about the pricing is what irritates me. Had they given devs an actual buffer period to work out how to trim down API requests, maybe include slight cost tweaks to Ultimate/Pro variants of their apps, or an option to have their UI sold to Reddit so they can include & provide accessible features in the native app, then I’d be talking differently. It’d still be a rough amount to swallow, but at least the devs would have time to find solutions. It makes me upset to see that Christian, the Apollo app creator, was trying to work with Reddit & was being reasonable…. and the Reddit devs interpreted it as a threat.

datamining to train AIs on Reddit is a thing and they are angling for that. Also if you think spamming dozens of API calls per second is lighter on their backend than a human browsing you have zero clue. Your browser caches all the items so you aren't redownloading much unless you aggressively clean browser cache, and the bloat is running on your PC not their servers. That's why it's javascript and not php.
