I saw the movie as a shallow, callous 18 year old and hadn't even heard of McCarthy-ism prior and I loved the movie to bits. Seen it three times since.
"I guarantee you this time next year we'll be up to our necks in monster movies and people dressed in fat suits and falling over." You can take a Kermode prediction to the bank.
@@soundslave I'm sorry you still feel you should (at least publicly) adhere to demonstrably nonsense claims. I don't know what political category to put myself in, and I don't like the preoccupation with that but you may be partly correct in your assumption that my political values align in some instances to liberalism. I'm definitely an advocate of a famous liberal quote, it's something like "I may wholeheartedly disagree with your opinion but will defend to the death your right to express it." Part of the problem here is the BBC probably USED to be a lot better overall. Anyway, take care dude.
I wonder if it really is harder to do good black & white than good colour? Like how fussy do you have to be with the colours to shoot good black & white?
IceCreamSuit Its not about color, its about light and shadow. Plus you have to decide on contrasts and the colors you use such as yellow or red dictate contrast and shades. This comment is 9 years later so maybe you already learned this
IceCreamSuit No problem. You had a legitimate curiosity. If you really want to see a difference in black and white styles, look at the high contrast, pencil drawn look of films like Persona or The Cranes Are Flying versus the low contrast grays of films like Mildred Pierce or Schindlers List
@@prilljazzatlanta5070 Okay, yeah will keep that in mind. I love Persona but haven't seen it in years but will take note of colour schemes perhaps more conciously as it would have a significant effect in the appreciation levels. From memory Persona is from '66, a year or two after virtually every film had transitioned to B&W, so my suspicion is it was filmed that way for aesthetic reasons. Interesting. The info you gave may be handy some day as I'm a bit of a creative type, so thanks!

"The BBC are unbiased" - hilarious.
How this film never got a single Academy Award completely baffles me.

Oh, Mark. The Comsat Angels are diabolical.
Haha! That BBC comment didn't age too well
It's a saying. You're waiting for an hour for a bus, and then they all come at once.
I thought it was very good, well acted well shot, good art direction.
Anyone know what the other films Mark was referring to when he said 'its like buses... but in this case four come at once'? (6:16)
There is a scientific reason why buses come all at once. It's to do with weight and speed.
And if you're thick, well what can I do?
Isn't it funny how only right-wingers say the BBC is biased and partisan. Right-wingers who also think Fox is 'fair and balanced'.
Both of the conclusions you have arrived at are untrue. Hopefully your opinion has now changed.
@@IceCreamSuit hardly, thanks Libertarian Larry.
