- As with many activities, birding has it own set of lingo and acronyms. Some terms are only used locally , while many are understandable anywhere in the world birding community.
In this video, I'll explain some of the local terms as well as some of the ones used by birders everywhere, though some you may not have heard about, especially if you are new to the birding activity.
The terms are simply brought together at random and will form the first set in a series which I hope will interest birders so that may continue with the series. Let me know in the comment section below.

Hi, uncle James. I've watched the fill episode off your video. Your info is really useful to the birders but I found out Mr Tann didn't mention about the time. If I'm not mistaken. I wish to know what is the best time to do birding. Thank you James Tann and keep it up.
Thank you James for another interesting video - I really "lapsup bird" as a term (not heard before) although what may be very common to you in Singapore can very very exotic to someone like me in the UK. Hopefully I will see some of these when I eventually get to visit. 😁
Thanks James, u are my "sifu" birder but as a bird photographer your forgot to mention the " light" as in time of day we choose to go and get the shot or location where we want to get the sun behind us or the "setup" that some bird photographers use to get BIF. Oh hey, u missed one acronym "Birds in Flight" Just joking but you are right some bird photographers do crazy things like throwing rocks at resting or nesting birds to get them to open its eyes or to fly. Can you talk about recording birds songs or singing. It's one area in birding that doesn't get much attention.

Thanks James Tann for your video that has taught me many bird terms. Your nemesis bird, the White-bellied Woodpecker, I spotted it a year ago. However, I saw it only once. Location: 310 Old Birdcage Walk
Singapore 798483. That was also where I saw a family of Buffy Fish Owls. However, the sighting was a year ago so it might have moved to another location. Best of luck!!!

My nemesis bird is any type of cuckoo. I have heard them and seen two but never photographed (proof of life :-)) them.

Firstly, let me say that pets birds are not likely to survive in the wild. Doing so will only lead them to their early death, mainly from predation from other wild birds. Your pets have lost their survival instincts to survive in the wild if you have kept them as pets. They will not know how to fend for themselves, including looking for food.
2ndly, pets birds released into the eco system will cause damage to the eco environment. If they do survive somehow, they must compete with the native birds for the same food supply,
3rdly, it is actually illegal to release pet animals into the nature reserves or anywhere else without authority, You can be fined up to $10K.
Please don't do it. Be a responsible pet owner.
