  • Dutch Sheets: Fighting the Good Fight of Faith (1 Timothy 6:12)
Dutch speaks at Hope Fellowship in Brandon, MS, on 12/18/2018. In 1 Timothy 6:12, Paul writes, “Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life…” Quotes: “Paul was saying, “Timothy, there are forces here trying to take you out. There's an enemy trying to destroy your destiny. You are not going to win this battle with a casual Lord's prayer. You're going to have to learn to fight this good fight of faith and lay hold of the eternal life that you've been given. One of David's mighty men was Eleazar. He fought so hard the sword froze to his hand. I said in one of my books when he could no longer hold on to or fight with his normal strength, he held on with his heart. That's the way I want to live. When I know what God wants to do, I want to be so determined to fight for what is right and for what is mine spiritually, that when the enemy opposes me, I will war in a way that you need to peel my hand off the sword. Very few Christians understand this mindset.”
Remember: you have been “blessed to be a blessing.” (Genesis 12:2) Pay it forward!

I’m going to talk to you about two Greek words and several verses of scripture.
    Jude 1:3
“I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.”
He was saying you need to fight for what you believe, fight for what we have received. The word used for “contend earnestly” is an interesting word in Greek. It is the root for our word “agony,” and “agonize.” The root word means “a contest or struggle.” In this verse it means to contend with an adversary. Jesus was agonizing in prayer because he knew what was coming. He says, “You're not going to win this war with a casual attitude.”
I’ve been shocked at the level of anger and animosity toward
the conservative views that most of us hold. It's not enough anymore just to debate, they're going to try to destroy us.
I was at the Kavanaugh hearings - it doesn't matter that there's a due process thing we have in America it really is a matter of there are flaws in the story The bottom line is if they don't like your ideology so they're going to try to take you out. We're going to have to contend for what we believe in. We're going to have to struggle and fight - not physically - but at a
    spiritual and political level.
The same word is used in 1 Timothy 6:12, “Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life…”
Paul was saying, “Timothy, there are forces here trying to take you out.
There's an enemy trying to destroy your destiny.
You are not going to win this battle with a casual Lord's prayer.
You're going to have to learn to fight this good fight of faith and lay hold
of the eternal life that you've been given.
    2 Timothy 4:7
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
Paul uses the same word here, as in,
“They beat me, but I kept fighting. They stoned me, but I kept fighting.
I know what it's like to be beaten, rejected, imprisoned and shipwrecked.
But I’ve learned to lay hold and never give up.”
One of David's mighty men was Eleazar.
    2 Samuel 23:10
He arose and attacked the Philistines until his hand was weary, and his
hand stuck to the sword. The Lord brought about a great victory that day.”
I said in one of my books when he could no longer hold on to
or fight with his normal strength, he held on with his heart.
When the battle was over, they had to peel his hand off the sword.
That's the way I want to live.
When I know what God wants to do, I want to be so determined
to fight for what is right and for what is mine spiritually, that when
the enemy opposes me I will war in a way that you need to peel my hand
    off the sword.
Very few Christians understand this mindset.
Our attitude is mostly, “Somebody help me, anoint me with oil.
Let's all get together on Sunday and pray a nice little prayer and hope
    everything will be okay.”
But there are just some battles that you're not going to
win in life if you don't have this courage in you somewhere.
    Philippians 3
12 Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on,
that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me.
13-14 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Paul is saying, “God didn't just lay hold of me, He seized me.”

We must have a "violent" faith!! (Determined to hold on to what is ours through Jesus Christ!!) "We suffer violence, but the violent take it by force!"
