    Good recipe! I basically followed your recipe, but a bit less onion, added a clove of crushed garlic, 5 cups of water total, and about 3/4 cups of ham. (We're carnivores.) This is my best Instant Pot recipe, so far. The flavor could clearly stand on its own without the ham. Thank you!

    I make my pea soup almost the same way but I always add ham hock or ham or Liquid Smoke, thyme from a very good spice company and it is just like fresh and a bay leaf. I always make a double batch because it freezes well without potatoes. So I use somewhere around 11 to 12 cups of water and two bags of peas. I have never done it in my new pressure cooker so I'm learning from you! :-)

    • @Jill4Today

      I always make a big batch too so I can freeze it up. It does freeze so well and it's nice to be able to bring out a container and heat it up. Thanks so much for watching. I hope you continue to enjoy your pressure cooker. They are sooooo great to have!

    great job.. thanks for sharing. if you were to add some diced ham to this, would anything else in the recipe/prep change? I liked the idea share in the comments of taking out the soupy parts and sautéing down the broth a bit.. I guess you could also add a thickener and simmer a bit? (some corn starch maybe, or instant potato flakes?)

    • @Jill4Today
      @Jill4Today  Před 7 lety +2

      Hi Sorahl 1 Thanks for writing! Yes, add the ham. Would be delicious. Regarding thickening the soup -- if it's not too thin, just turn the instant pot on to saute and stir until it begins to thicken up. You could add some potato flakes to thicken it up. But, beware -- when split soup cools, it gets thick and you'll need to add water to it. .

    This looks so good! I think I'm doing something wrong with my pot. It takes about 40 minutes to build up pressure! Any advice?

    • @Jill4Today
      @Jill4Today  Před 8 lety +1

      +Laura Castillejos It depends upon how little you have in the pot or if you might be starting off with really cold water. But it does seem a bit too long for pressure to build up. Can you give me an example of what you've tried cooking which gives you this long of a build-up time? I'm wondering if your venting knob is seated correctly? Of if you have a slight "off" with your gasket? You might check to see that your gasket is correctly seated all the way around the rim. I have found mine not all the way on from time to time. Let me know what you find out -- I'd like to know.

    Hey Jill,, on page 3 of the Instant Pot directions it says split peas are one of the foods that should not be used in a pressure cooker as they can clog the unit. Please comment on this. Don't want to ruin my brand new Instant Pot. Thanks!

    • @Jill4Today
      @Jill4Today  Před 7 lety +5

      You can use them (I never knew you couldn't!) and I'm surprised the book states that. To be frank with you, I think their manual is pretty poor. Having said all that. Go ahead and use them but always, always do a "Natural Release." on the pot. The lid will clog when you do a quick release (true with most beans) because it's all foamy in the pot while under pressure and if you do a quick release all that foam wants to run for the exit. Enjoy the pot! Enjoy making split pea soup.

      Great tip Jill. Got a Pressure cooker xl for Christmas and have cooked everything since then in it. The thing is magical, lol. I do all the cooking for my wife and I, and always wanted to use a pressure cooker, but was super afraid as I'm sure you have heard many times. These electric ones have many safety steps on them and I feel safe the whole time. I will use natural release on everything now, just a great tip, thank you.

      Mark L - the version of the manual that just came with my Duo Plus, which is the newest model, doesn't say not to use them. It cautions us to be aware that some foods like beans, oats, etc can foam and cause issues, and to follow the directions in Instant Pot recipes. Basically, not to overfill the pot.
