Easy Split Pea Soup made in an Instant Pot

- I like split pea soup. It's one of those soups that is so satisfying during the winter months. It's easy to make too, especially if you have an Instant Pot cooker. You can make this in a regular pot, but cooking time will be longer (I don't know how long). In the Instant Pot it cooks in 10 minutes after coming up to pressure, then let it depressurize naturally. Purée or enjoy chunky. It's a delicious soup either way. One note: It thickens a lot as it stands. Be prepared to add water or stock if you plan to serve it later.

We used to stop at Anderson’s Split Pea Soup every time we’d drive to SoCal or Disneyland from the Bay Area when I was a kid. I’ll never forget how good it was!
Me too!
I always come back to this video to refresh my memory (for cooking time mainly) when making this soup.
I just made this soup, it's good! Really did turn out like it is supposed to.
Looks great Dennis. I was gifted one of those a few months ago and really love it. Soups and stocks work really well in it. Nothing like a one pot hardly no mess meal and easy clean up also. I always enjoy your videos and the hard work you put into them really shows
Thanks boeyone. I appreciate the feedback on the videos. I am also experimenting with liners in the pot - almost no cleaning at all. So far they are working well. -Dennis
Great job for a newbie! You really caught on quickly. Here’s a couple helpful hints to help you along the way. Set pot to sauté and wait for hot indicator to come on before adding oil. I usually swirl oil over bottom of pan before adding veggies. No real need to heat stock separately on stove. I add my homemade stock right out of the fridge. If you’ve got discoloration on bottom of pan from cooking beans, peas, or much of anything after washing pot put an inch or so of water in bottom and a few tablespoons of vinegar and let sit for awhile. Poor out vinegar and give pot a quick washing and drying and your pot will look like new. I love my IP.
Didn't know about the vinegar trick, thx!
Also baking powder with hot water will remove anything burnt on the bottom.@@starrjeffers2730
Got a little cold snap here this week and remembered this video. Man O man did it hit the spot. Gave some to a sick friend and got back 3 texts thanking me.
Thanks Bob. I enjoyed learning about this. I'm glad you had enough to share. -Dennis
My daughter may be gifting me this pot for Christmas... if so, I'm making this soup! Looks so good.
I hope you get the pot for Christmas. I am finding it more and more useful. -Dennis
I just made it and taste amazing ! I changed it a little bit but it's all good. Thanks
It really looks good, today we are getting snow in Indiana and a bowl of that would hit the spot! Thank you for sharing
The soup is really good. I made another pot and put most in the freezer. And yesterday I saw I can buy split peas in a five-pound bag at a local store. I think I'll be making a lot of this soup this winter. Thanks for commenting. -Dennis
The instant pot has soup setting as well which I use, thanks for the recipe
Thanks for the comment. The Instant Pot is an excellent appliance. I'm happy I have one. -Dennis
Waiting patiently for the yogurt episode! Seriously though, the soup looks delicious. I have the Instant Pot Ultra 60. Got it about a month ago and I just love it.
Thanks Belinda. I am working on the yogurt project this morning. I hope to start the video later today. Stayed tuned. -Dennis
Thanks for your soup posting.. I also enjoy your blog.
Thanks Cindy. And thanks for the positive feedback on the blog too. --Dennis
Ha ha. I just got my mini IP two days ago and was enjoying a nice bowl of split pea 'n ham soup (made in my new IP!) while watching this video. Sooo good. Nothing like a comforting bowl of soup. Thanks! Btw, I put potatoes in mine. I'm a chunky soup kinda gal. Yum!
you will love it this will be fun
Thanks Diane. You're right. I am enjoying it. It was a good choice for me. -Dennis
I've been toying with the idea of getting one of those Instant Pots. I think you just made up my mind for me! Great recipe, Dennis.
It took me a while to finally make up my mind. I'm happy I bought it. Thanks for the comment. -Dennis
You should get one. The newer ones do everything from Slow cook to sauté to Rice to Cake to yogurt and everything in between
I am the world's worst cook and I hate to cook and I got one. I am learning to use it and am actually finding it fun! Get one! First I got the 3 quart and I love it but then also had to get the 8 quart because it was on a ridiculous sale price and I know I'll want to do roasts and such for a group.
I just purchased on last month. I love this pea soup recipe and you make it look so easy to do! Thanks so much. By the way, I purchased this appliance but the name is GOURMIA. Think I got if for around $60. Same thing!
Two Christmasses ago I gave an Instant Pot to my daughter-in-law, as well as one to my best friend. I waited, and waited, and waited for one of them to tell me how they liked it and to share with me some recipes. Never happened. Finally, out of frustration, I bought one for myself. Actually cooking something in it waited until last week. Mind, this started Christmas of 2017 and now it is late January, 2019. So in looking for something to do with it, I ran across 2 bags of green split peas. Neither of the Instant Pot cookbooks address split pea soup, so I went on CZcams and your site jumped out at me, especially since I had been impressed with a recipe from your site last year and had donated. So thanks for this recipe. I look forward to having delicious split pea soup very soon. BTW - Last year I donated. Tried to this year but your site doesn't believe where I live or my Zip Code, so I was not able to do so.
Thank you Rita. That split pea soup is very good. I made it several times. And no worries about the donation. I appreciate the thought and willing generosity. Currently my CZcams channel is doing well enough to cover the cost of food and some expenses. -Dennis
Excellent video Dennis. I've been curious about the Instant pots since I've seen them advertised. Looks like quite a multipurpose device with numerous functions. I have several slow cookers and I like them and use them a lot, but this looks much more versatile. I also love to make split pea soup in the winter, especially if I happen to have a nice ham bone in the freezer I've been saving for soup.
Thanks Mea. I'm happy with the cooker so far. I think the best feature is that I don't need to keep an eye on it like I do my pressure cooker. It takes care of itself. -Dennis
I’m delighted you have bought an Instant Pot, Denis. I recently got a great bargain on one too, and so far I absolutely love it. My main interest was in making yogurt. I have now made two batches of Greek yogurt, which was so good that I expect I will never need to buy yogurt again. I have also made a stew, a pasta dish, and a cheesecake (which turned out great). It also saves a lot of dishwashing! Of course there are things it does not do well, such as making things crisp. But I think it s a very valuable tool.
Thanks Gerarda. I really appreciate your sharing you experience with the Instant Pot. You have more experience than I do; so your wisdom is valuable to me. Today I am preparing to make Greek style yogurt, doing a video of it. There are so many things I want to try. -Dennis
Mobile Home Gourmet ASMR Dennis, I recommend downloading the Instant Pot app on a mobile device. It has several yogurt recipes. The one I used was Instant Pot Yogurt for Newbies. The author notes that while 8 hours of fermentation is generally cited, she recommends 10 hours for a creamier yogurt. Both times, I used 10 hours, and it turned out great.
Thanks Gerarda. The problem is that the app requires a smart phone. I have a really dumb phone. It's an old BlackBerry and I like it too much to part with it. Thanks for the recommendation of 10 hours. I'll see how it looks at 8 and if it needs to go longer, I can add time. -Dennis
Mobile Home Gourmet ASMR I found her recipe on CZcams too! czcams.com/video/nC3o5v-G88M/video.html&sns=em

Great Thanks!
You're welcome. -Dennis
Nice you! I am going to investigate it ad an alternative to standard pressure cooker.
Recipe Adaptation: smoked turkey tails! The rest looks fabulous. Thanks for sharing.
Ty looks delish you can add lemon juice( from a fresh lemon) instant of more salt
I just finished making this and I must say it beats out all the split peas I have ever had. Thank you Dennis.
Dennis, A very good demonstration. Split pea soup is one of my favorites and it is very economical. If any of you watching have not visited the mobile home gourmet website I encourage you to do so. There is a wealth of information there.👍
Thanks for the plug. I appreciate your mentioning my web site. I do work hard at it and my body of works after six years doesn't match that of the big sites out there, but I'm proud of it. Thanks for the encouragement. -Dennis
Mobile Home Gourmet ASMR you’re welcome Dennis.
If you cook it longer 15 - 20 minutes, the peas will break down on their own. Just stir it with a spoon and you wont need the blender.
Yummy good with corn bread
Mmm, yes, corn bread does sound good. Thanks for the suggestion. -Dennis
Yum! I'm making that this weekend! How well do you think it would freeze? I would like to make a large batch at once and freeze most of it.
It freezes wonderfully... I always make a huge batch and portion most of it for the deep freeze. This gadget sure would make it more convenient though !
Thanks Jake. I needed this question answered too because I haven't tested freezing it yet. My sealed portions are still in the fridge. Thanks again (and thanks for those recipes you sent me). -Dennis
I'd be naughty and put some fresh or sour cream in there. You could also fry off a little curry powder before you start sweating your mirepoix ingredients, but that's better in pumpkin soup.
Yet another delicious recipe from you, Dennis.
Excellent idea UncleGweilo. I have some sour cream in the fridge and there is a serving of soup in there too. I nice dollop of sour cream on the hot soup sounds excellent. Thanks. -Dennis
I always put some dairy, canned evap milk, cream, half n half or milk.... just like my mom, last thing! Otherwise the same except for the thyme, so i may try that.
Put stock in instant pot and sauté it. It will come to a boil very quickly. That way you don’t have to use a second pan.
That's what I do too.
Good job.
Thanks Gary, and amusing too, because I just finished shooting another version of that video today. Perfect timing on your part. -Dennis
@@MobileHomeGourmet I have my version under pressure as we type. Mine is a bit more old world European Dutch style.

Why didn't you use the soup button?

Welcome to my channel Eduardo. There's a name I haven't seen in many years. I had a friend named Salcedo living in Los Angeles. He moved; I moved; we lost contact. Nice guy. -Dennis
@@MobileHomeGourmet thank you for welcoming me to your Channel, I have a cousin that lives in California I do not know in what city but he is still live there.
Blessings
Dennis did you get my message here in this video, It has a link and maybe it was tagged as spam. ?
Yes, I did get it. Messages with URLs in them are usually set aside by CZcams. I watched the video. That make and model looks like a disaster waiting to happen. It reminds me of the old days of stove top pressure cookers that were rushed to market for profit without concern for reliability. Even newer ones can be risky. I bought a Fagor (made in China POS) at Costco and after several uses the pressure valve started to fail. The plastic wasn't heat resistant. I replaced the pot with an expensive Kuhn Rikon. So far, my Instant Pot seems to be a safe and reliable design. Chinese knockoffs are a risk. Thanks for sending that link. It helped me to appreciate the one I bought. I'm making yogurt in it right now. -Dennis
Awesome! Enjoy :-)
🤣 I live close to Buellton/Solvang home of Pea Soup Anderson’s. Very cool .. but not as good as homemade..
It must have been an off day when I went to Andersons for soup. It was watery, bland and really not good at all AND it wasn't even hot! Then you could add whatever you wanted to the soup from a lazy susan on the table that had yucky stuff in it. That was 40 years ago and Ive driven by there a hundred times but never went back.
For living so near, I never ate there. Your comment was especially timely because I heated up some of this homemade soup for lunch today, and I'll probably make another pot very soon. I really like this soup. Thanks for the comment. -Dennis
I'll be making this tomorrow
I HAVE A GOURMIA - PRESSURE COOKER - I LOVE IT - BETTER THAN THE JUICER I BOUGHT - (THAT'S ANOTHER STORY - SMH) - I HAD A PROBLEM WITH IT - BUT IT WAS MY FAULT - THE FIRST (1ST.) TIME THAT I USED IT... - AFTER THAT IT'S BEEN SMOOTH SAILING - AND - I'M VERY HAPPY WITH IT - IT CUTS COOKING TIME IN HALF... - GOOD LUCK TO ALL - AND - I'M COOKING SPLIT PEA SOUP RIGHT NOW - BUT ON THE STOVE - THE NEXT TIME - I'LL USE THE PRESSURE COOKER...
You should try boiled eggs in the instant pot. You will never cook them any other way. Peel like a dream.
I took your suggestion Belinda and cooked some eggs yesterday evening. They turned out excellent. Thanks. And you're right about peeling. Just roll them around a bit and the shell practically falls off on its own. Perfect boiled eggs. -Dennis
Mobile Home Gourmet ASMR Awesome. It’s the only way I’ll do it from now on. Once you have the timing down according to the size eggs you are using, you can make a perfect soft boiled egg that peels like a dream.
