  • Do people in Hainan eat Hainanese Chicken Rice?
In the world of food, the name Hainan might make you think of the delicious dish Hainan Chicken Rice. But if you actually go to Hainan Island, not many people are eating it.
INSTEAD they're eating something known as Wenchang Chicken, from the city of Wenchang. It's usually cooked in two ways: Either as Baiqie chicken, which is vaguely similar to Hainanese Chicken Rice, or as Coconut Wenchang Chicken.
And the dish that locals love the most? COCONUT WENCHANG CHICKEN
So, I travelled to the city of Wenchang on Hainan Island, tracked down a Wenchang chicken farmer, and tried the most authentic Hainan Coconut Wenchang Chicken dish that you can find.

Bonus knowledge - Hainan Chicken Rice ( Wen Chang Chicken ) is so different from Hainan Chicken Rice in South East Asia ( Mainly Singapore and Malaysia ), the two are considered different dishes, despite termed as Chicken Rice in English. If you go to Hainan in China and ask for Chicken Rice, you will get Wen Chang Chicken Rice. If you visit Singapore or Malaysia, you will get Hainan Chicken Rice.
Hainan Chicken Rice is a deviation ( if you would call it that ), of Wen Chang Chicken. And Situ, if you are reading, the reason why the tea taste like British Tea, is because in the past, a lot of Hainanese and migrant workers from Hainan worked on British ships as cook and help. When I was a much younger man, coffeeshop and food stalls that sells pork chop and chicken chop etc, were always run by a Hainanese in Singapore. In fact, there is a dish called Hainan pork chop!

I thought British tea was from Fujian, hence why it sounds like the local word for tea.

@@TravelinChina British Tea in England came from all over China, mostly the Southern part of China. I was referring to the tea you had in your video. It tasted like British tea because the Hainanese worked for the British on their ships. Thus the taste is somewhat familiar to you. Chinese people do not add milk in their tea. In southern part of China, some add milk and sugar because of British influence. My family used to add sugar in tea, which is consider very weird in some part of China.

The Hainanese Chicken Rice was started in Singapore by a Hainanese. It is a variation of Wenchang Chicken Rice. The main difference is that the rice is cooked differently. The blanching of the chicken is also improved. The original shop is still operating. It is two streets away from the famous Raffles Hotel.

I'm sure that I could spend hours just playing with the chickens and that puppy~ The cooked Wenchang chicken seems like it would be delicious simply going off the variety of flavors with the presumably creamy coconut, hearty chicken broth, salty soy sauce, and sour lime juice!
