" I don't wear socks when I overclock"
I don't wear underwear when I overclock. You gotta think about what is most important. If you loose your feet at least you got that going for you.
I always wear a full neon green gimp suit with a carolina-reaper-chilli-paste covered mouth-ball while overclocking ... just for protection ;)
Naked better
you don't wear socks for static.

Liquid Nitrogen is so 2016. I use dark matter to cool my processors.
Pah, Dark matter? I use Ice Tea to cool my processors.

Catch up pleb, everyone is using quantum mechanics for removing heat from processors.
its called the Leidenfrost effect. your skin is warm enough that it makes the LN2 turns to gas before it hits your skin, creating a barrier of gas preventing your hand from freezing.
And the reason wearing gloves is a bad idea is due to the glove freezing and then freezing your hand.
You don't dip your hands into LN2 and leave them there because your hands will cool down enough for the Leidenfrost effect to wear off and then freeze your hand. You need a big temperature differential for it to stay in place.
So it's a similar principle to putting your hand in molten lead, only the gas barrier is the LN2 itself instead of the water vapor from your hand?
Rodrigo Fonyat Yeah I guess you could put it like that
You really don't want to put your hand in LN2 for more than a couple seconds. It gets frosty quick. Quickly pulling a Gatorade from the bottom of a 5 gal water cooler full of nitrogen is about as far as I'd personally go. Same goes for liquid oxygen, btw.
"The Vaseline keeps it from getting in there - which seems kind of counter-intuitive" LOL

You know, it's been really great watching Jay's LN2 initiation and apprenticeship.
Watching this video again and then watching the latest RIP Steve Gamers Nexus, my respect for Jay increased exponentially.
It's really satisfying to follow someone with a passion for something and watching them learn, growing in confidence, and eventually becoming proficient enough to take the leaderboards every time a new CPU or GPU comes out.
Respect Jay. Total respect.

Yeah I know puters gets grumpy when they get too cold, but he said what he said ;) Lmao
The reason why pouring nitrogen on yourself is safer than wearing fabric and holding nitrogen is because of "Leidenfrost effect". Essentially the basics is that because the temperature of a liquid is so low compared to your skin temperature, the liquid will form a vapor-like surface between you and itself to keep from boiling rapidly. This is why when you heat a pan on a high temperature then pour water, the water will slide instead of Boil immediately.
When you wear fabric or somethign that can absorb the cold substance, it will burn you since it has nowhere to escape except to go through you.
The Leidenfrost Effect is not to keep the fluid from boiling, but because of the fluid boiling.
@@StudleyDuderight its the differences in temperature. If you are colder than boiling liquid, you will absorb the heat and get burned. but if the liquid is extremely colder than your body temperature, then it will slide right off of you because of the vapor between you and the cold liquid.
@@SeSaGaming You still get the effect when you quickly dip a finger into boiling water.
@@StudleyDuderight molten metal as well

Always funny to see how overclocking is a business, back in the 90s every one would've looked at you as a dangerous mad scientists.
Amazing to see how quick Vince is at setting up the board and stuff.
Watching Jay or Stever from GN, who are reasonably familiar versus Vince makes me realize just how long Vince has been doing this.
Just another day at the office for him haha.
Awesome record, Jay! Vince showed ya how to put it to the wall like a BOSS! So cool (literally) that he went to your studio to do this project.
he already has beaten Jays score xDD

Thomas Kain probably because he had the help of the guy who usually holds all the world records
WayStedYou they also had that new king pin card which allowed for much more power to go into the GPU
And Vince had profiles set for everything. + He hadn't tried the benchmark yet.
haha :D
I mean it wasn't even fair that he posted that under his name, considering Vince brought all the equipment and did almost everything. When jay does his OC from scratch alone then you can say that actually he broke the world record.
I always wondered how the top record holders did this. Makes the thermals on my water cooled system seem like nothing lol. Awesome vid, loved it.

One of my Fav videos. Exotic cooling walkthrough
The phenomenon that protects their hands is called the Leidenfrost effect, look it up its pretty cool science.

Some people love to experiment with the thing, not necceseraly on electronics, food is a fun thing to play with for example.
ATSAKYTI
The reason it's safer to have bare skin over gloves is because of the Leidenfrost effect. The liquid nitrogen boils on your skin creating a small barrier which stops the rest of the nitrogen from touching the surface. Gloves are an insulator so there's not as much heat boiling the nitrogen. it'll freeze quickly but slower than direct contact therefore, paradoxical freezing your hand quicker :)

Awesome Jay, great video man, Loving, absolutely loving your videos, there are so many! I know this is old, like 6+Months old, but wow!
Since Vince didn't give you a great explanation as to why gloves aren't a good idea to wear, I thought I'd have a crack with my limited knowledge of chemistry.
What protects your hands when you pour liquid N2 over them is the Leidenfrost effect. Basically what happens is when there is a significant delta between the liquid and the surface it is coming into contact with, the liquid instantly vaporizes and forces away the rest of the liquid as the new formed gas expands.
The danger with wearing gloves is when the density (in terms of molecules per volume) is less than that of your skin. The solid surface then loses that significant difference in temperature much quicker and then loses the Leidenfrost effect. This allows the liquid to directly contact the solid material resulting in accelerated cooling, which is further worsened if the material were to be porous (allowing the N2 to soak into it).
Pretty good description
I just assumed that it caused it to remain in contact with the skin longer (by acting like a barrier between the N2 and the outside air) allowing a larger amount of heat to be leached away from the skin surface. Either way, there's a reason why there's a difference between safety-gear and proper-safety-gear. This is one of those cases where having the incorrect safety-gear can make things worse.
introducing Liquid nitrogen skunk-works
I thought I knew a lot about computers.. wow this put a whole new perspective on the levels you can take overclocking great video

That's a high quality content Jay
This what I'm subscribing for.
Awesome video.... extremely impractical method to OC but this was cool AF to watch. AMAZING editing as well. Keep up the good work Jay and Coconut.
Awesome video, guys !!
Btw, the reason why LN2 just boils off your bare skin is because of the Leidenfrost effect.
When the temperature difference between a liquid and a surface is very high, it'll boil so fast, the vapour acts as an insulator and separates the surface from the liquid.
tldr, the LN2 is boiling so fast, it doesn't have time to freeze your skin.
Gloves/fabric interferes with that, so the LN2 actually does get to freeze you.
"Cause electricity doesn't like to be frozen"
WUT.
cold electronical lanes, are actually really usefull ! google superconductor ! :P the thing , they fight with the heaterplate is the condensation and freezing ( wich as we all know, is water .. and water and electricity is not good ) :P technically electricity loves frozen :P but dry frozen without condensation and actual freeze
You know electricity is just electrons right?
While not literally correct, it's figuratively accurate. As temperatures go down, electrons slow down and electricity "flows" more slowly. It's not actually frozen, but for a six word explanation to someone who isn't Gordon Freeman, it's all you need to hear.
Krytern UK yep, but don't think they have a solid, liquid and gassous, they're not an element. If with "frozen" Jay meant a state of low mobility, the phrase have sense: current is moving electrons, obviously they don't like to be "slowed down"(?)
Stoney Mahoney thanks, you wrote the same things I written after you, but more firmly than me :)

You didn't see that coming, did you? Jay
Ofek Sabran he said evbot plug
Ofek Sabran You just made my day. Thank you 😂😂
So wouldn't it be safer do this naked then?
Yes, that would be the safest way. The heat from your body creates a barrier that makes the liquid nitrogen just roll off your skin. Its called the Leidenfrost effect. But if you held on to the liquid or it got stuck in your balls, you are done dude...
Vaseline has nothing to do with why they dont get hurt, its your body heat.

Nitrogen is an inert gas it doesn't explode :)
