  • We use a ‪@johnwilsonblades5180‬ Pattern 99 Revolution blade to show the difference between a new blade, and one that needs replacing. New blades will have a “sharpening line” for you to gauge how much “life” is left in the blade. If you are unsure how much life the blades started with, you can check the original sharpening life based on the bottom toe pick. Stainless Steel blade like Eclipse, Step, Gam and other, will have a etched line on one side of the blade as they are not chromed like a carbon steel blade.

This is why I am sticking with my Legacy 8 blades for a long time. I'm used to these blades. The grass always looks greener from the other side, but the Legacy's are just fine. And they're cheap. like. cheeeaaaap. They are worth 3 Gold Seals altogether, so I can afford to replace the Legacy 8 blades every 1-2 years. Also, they are not hard to sharpen because they are a one-piece configuration and are parallel blades. If there are any sharpening errors, I won't feel the effects just as bad as if I was on a Gold Seal blade.

Clearly waiting until there are no more sharpenings left is going to really affect technique. How far down do you recommend getting new blades? My Rev Pattern 99s are near “half” their life.

I’d suggest half life is probably your time to replace them. Once you go below that, you’re starting to push back away from the picks

I’ve been skating for a long time now and had consistent spins, after my last sharpening I am struggling - flopping to the inside edge too quickly when rising from a sit, centering/entrance edge is off. Thinking something is up with the rocker? I skate 3-4 times a week and have tested thru adult gold MIF and Silver FS. It’s been a month since the sharpening and still struggling….

Sounds like they were sharpened out of square and there’s something up with rocker as well.

@@bsharpottawa thank you for the quick response! I will take them for a re-sharpening/ correction.
