- May 15th, 2014. Went to St. Paul, Nebraska to record their Thunderbolt 1003. My dad works with a guy from the fire department there and said they test the fire signal on the 15th of the month, so I had to go see.

NOTE: It is NOT mounted solely on a tall standpipe nor does it even have a standpipe. The air from the blower passes through the pole to get to the siren head. It isn't going to fall. Comments regarding it "falling over" will result in me replying in a snarky manner. - Věda a technologie

The thunderbolt is arguably the most famous and innovative siren in history. It was able to do Steady, Wail, Alternating Steady, Alternating Wail, Pulse, Pulse Wail, Undulating Hi-Lo, Growl, and Fast Wail (this one had to be done manually). What makes it more impressive is that it was invented in 1952. Truly remarkable piece of equipment.

The tornado siren sounds like someone's coming towards you from like a horror movie or something
This tone was used in the event of a nuclear attack in the civil defense days. A steady wail was used for tornadoes being the Cold War is over many serins of older origins still use the hi-lo tone. Clearly it grabs the attention as intended

@@dfwrproductions Both solenoids open and close at the same time rather than alternating, which causes the sound to "pulse". Pulse wail is the same thing but with the attack signal.

There is a "Refurbished" Thunderbolt 1003 all they did was repaint it. It's in Derby KS
If you go to Olney Texas there is a working 1003 right in the middle of the town

They have to fix the pole. When it rotates it wobbles. Probably have to replace a new pole with a sturdy one
There's nothing wrong with it. It's a steel light pole anchored into solid concrete. Steel flexes. The thing has been there for 60 years and has taken 80+mph winds before. It'll be fine.

When you realise you get closer to the sound it was a thunderbolt siren where someone turned it on

How far can tornado sirens like this one be heard??
It depend on the weather but it is mostly heard up to 30 miles away on a clear day.
30 miles? Lol. The furthest over heard a Thunderbolt was about 7 miles. I was downwind and it had a 5M blower.

Too bad we don’t have tornado sirens in my area. I love seeing them. I saw the rare ACA Hurricane in Milwaukee, WI in July 2018. There’s a new FS 508 by my grandmas house that replaced a 2t22 and the new siren was moved to her house.

this used to be the signal for our community for tornados, the up and down alternate high low, still gives me chills to listen to it since it used to terrify my as a little kid, I mean I thought something was wrong with the siren it sounded all messed up like the world was ending or something.
Well, the origins of that wail is apparently for nukes, so might as well be the sound of the end.

Yeah, it wasn't very common that they were ordered with the AF Timer configured to run high low wail. Usually just came with steady high low.
