Ring Around the Fireflies, who decides who lives and dies?
When the sheriff cleared the last of the outlaws from town, there was very little left standing. The shops were burnt down to ashes and the church was still in flames. Folks wandered around, treating wounds and comforting one another. Really there was not much else they could do.
The bad guys were gone, but at great cost.
The town had its peace back.
“Better to live in war than be free and have nothing” was what was whispered.
We Everyone claimed to love the respite, to be grateful to the sheriff for freeing them. But deep down they wondered if things could have been different.
You stand on the edge of town, leaning against the remains of a general store. They were safe, free, at peace. You finally had peace. But you’d all lost everything. And that was a different kind of war.
