  • The rock opera "Tommy" was one of The Who's biggest hits, and won five Tony Awards when it was translated to Broadway three decades ago. Now it's back, in a version that Pete Townshend and director Des McAnuff say is more relevant than ever. Correspondent Tracy Smith talks with Townshend, who describes the personal price he's paid for every iteration of "Tommy"; and with the star and creative team who discuss turning the story of a pinball wizard into Broadway magic.

Listen to the Broadway soundtrack from 1993, and then after the show, get the original album. I heard the movie version first, and later when I heard the original album, it was interesting to note the differences.

There's almost too many musicals today but Tommy is one definitely worth seeing (hopefully tour regionally).
I remember the 'from you I get opinions' section a very moving parent-child bonding moment. Pete turned a child sex abuse trauma into a very powerful work (and seeing the Who play Baba O Riley as the clouds parted in Nola, unforgettable). Go see the incredible Tommy!! 🎉🎉❤

Pete never put WHO you are, a rock genius in every way, in the same sentence as Ababa. I had older sisters and a brother so we had a lot of good music in the house already, but as a child of the 70's "Won't Get Fooled Again" was the first cool album I bought on my own. When I got Tommy, my friends and I would act it out in my basement. Love you and the Who for at least 52 years or more....we had Woodstock in the house when I was 11 years old. Thank you for always being so great.

In 1976, I got to see the Who live, they were amazing, they played all their older hits, all of Tommy and all of Who’s Next, it was one of the best concerts of my life! Roger Daltry was a bronzed Greek God, I was standing right underneath him and my 21 year old brain was completely blown!! Pete Townsend, with his arms huge swings while playing guitar. Of course they switched guitars at the end, to smash up the stage, Kieth Moon was fantastic ❤

My brother's band, Cannonball, was the pit band for the first ever staging, in 1971, by the Seattle Opera. He was lead guitar. I know the wiki mentions a different band, who were chosen when the performance moved from the Moore Theater (now the Moore Egyptian) to the Opera House. Not entirely sure about that but they followed Cannonball as the pit band. Better Midler played the Acid Queen and Tommy's mother (having to give birth onstage) and was much better in the role than Tina Turner, IMHO who only played the Acid Queen. I got to meet her backstage. What I remember is how short she is and that she recognized me as my brother's sister right away. Pete Townshend came over to Seattle and did put his stamp of approval on the production saying something like they were able to capture the music and his idea of the storyline better than anybody he had heard up til then. The music director stated that he was amazed that they didn't have to use sheet music, not understanding rock n roll musicians very well and apparently not knowing that 3 of them were classically trained (my bro' wrote a symphony at age 17). I'm very excited to see this new imagining if it's at all possible. I love how much Pete loves it.

Today show folks like Bryant really got on her for that. She seemed to have a demur towards 60’s rock performers and band. She resents that she has give them ode and honor to them because they are her generation. She likes broadway , musical stuff or lounge from the 30’s. More stage stuff. But she does like songwriters such as Lennon, James Taylor and John Denver types. She tries to be respectful to rock performers but like a child with first time guests, she is not good. Linda McCartney. Thats why Rona Barrett came in.
