- I am new to growing Neofinetia (Vanda) falcata orchids, and today I wanted to share some of the things I have learnt within the first year of growing these orchids. My Neo's won't be winning any awards! But I am getting better at looking after them.
Featuring Ryokohou, Tamakongo, Konshima, Kamiyama nishiki, Shinkoto, Seikoboku, and the two Hanagoromo x Hien cross seedlings.
I just purchased my very first Neo 😊 uh-oh! I feel an obsession coming on! 😅 Beautiful little things, so elegant! I will need to learn to restrain myself with watering!
I have been growing Neos for several years, and I have had good success growing in 2 inch net pots with just a small amount of NZ sphagnum moss. I don’t do the Japanese moss mounds, because I don’t think they dry out quickly enough. I find it best to try to use the amount of moss that dries out within about 2 days in my conditions. I never water again until they are crunchy dry, and I only water about once a week or less through the winter.
Great growing advice, thank you! Dry in two days sounds like a very useful rule of thumb.
What may be perfect in the mountains of Japan won't necessarily work elsewhere. I guess that's half the joy - and more than half the frustration - of growing orchids. I tried moss mounds but they didn't work for me. I haven't succumbed again yet, but I can feel the urge and I'm not going to be able to resist much longer!
I'd love to see an update this summer if you manage to get the bigger ones to bloom!
I'd love to see them to flower, too! Fingers crossed...
I just bought my first one pretty big £10 😊 just got to see how it is when I get it and how to care for it its a normal neo see how it goes.
Orchids are the werewolves of the plant world... Once bitten there is no hope! Your neos look lovely and I have no doubt by now they've been joined by more. I used to grow them with their roots hanging in jam jars that I filled with water and emptied once or twice a week and sprayed daily. Not great for display but the plants seemed to love it and grew like crazy. Sad to say I never managed to flower them, I think I mollycoddled them too much (a friend who does well with them tells me they like cool and fairly dry over winter) and I currently don't have any, but Zsusanah (not sure of the spelling) has several listed at the moment that I've been drooling over. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) I'd overspent within a week of payday this month so buying any at the moment is out of the question! If she still has the ones I like best come payday I may overspend again.
XD you're so right! There is no going back. Your Neos sound like they were happy so I hope you do get more. Your friend is right about the cool and dry winter rest, from what I have read they develop the flower buds during that winter resting period.
If this is Spicesotic, she always has an orchid or few to drool over!
@@orchidsathome4475 It is indeed. I spend far too much with her! I want to try again with one or two, but space is a big problem at the moment.
@@debbiethomas3687 very true on the space, it is always tempting to squeeze one more in! Cost is a problem with orchids. Seedlings can keep the costs down, but you've got to wait a long time for the flowers. Plus, they get bigger, and that doesn't help the space problem...
I've been growing two of my neos insemi-hydro for 6 months. So far so good.
Nice! Great that you are having success with it. I'm keen to try an orchid or two in inorganic media, so this is good to hear.
Less watering and more air flow, dont mist or water unless they are dry to avoid damage
Great advice, thanks Dan!
Very interesting thank you 😊 Where are you sourcing your Neos now we have the new regulations?
Thanks for the feedback :) if you mean the new need for phytosanitary certificates... it is frustrating, for all orchid buying. These are from UK ebay sellers. I also recommend the Facebook groups. There are some great enthusiasts and beautiful plants available there.
