  • Well, the title--long-winded as it is--says it all. I set up a couple legacy low voltage relays and swap them out. I talk a bit about various ways to deal with wires and power supplies. I'll be doing more videos on this subject as I come up with examples and see more systems.
(Also, yes, I keep saying Solid State when I mean Electromechanical, I was doing a lot of different things when i was making these videos)

I'm trying to update my houses lighting wiring. What is your opinion on bypassing the relay with a Lutron Caseta switch where the relay was, then controlling the switch with a wireless pico remote?

It's certainly possible, but I haven't had much experience with the Lutron Caseta. I looked at one at some point, but the current rating was lower than desired. That could've just been the model I was looking at, though.

I wish Alterco would ship the Shelly i4 DC version. That would make things a lot simpler.

Yes, it really would! I have some smaller relays that make good intermediaries, and I still think that smaller gauge, solid core wire is actually fine for the switch inputs at 110V (low current), but I'm hesitant to give that advice and cause someone harm because I didn't think of some gotcha out there I haven't seen yet or there's some strange thing happening with someone's wires in their walls.

@@smartercircuits Looks like my wish has been granted, I just ordered 8 of the i4 DC modules from the US store - hope to use them to control shelly pro 4 PMs for my barn lighting system (replacing many RR7s in two huge panels)

@@johnmerryman1825 I'll have ot grab a couple myself and do a video covering them! I appreciate the back and forth and hope you'll check out videos from time to time!

Anyone getting way into contemporary home automation should heed the cautionary tale of these old low voltage systems. If you go for ‘latest and greatest’ systems then you should be prepared for some very painful future experiences when replacement parts aren’t available.
