You guys might know this already, but just in case you do not. This song is the last song on the Operation: Mindcrime album, , which is a concept album (so the lyrics might seem out of place without knowledge of the complete story). I consider this to be one of the best concept albums of the 80's and the story is still relevant to our world today. When you get a chance, the three of you should give the whole album a listen (on your own time if you want), just make sure to have the lyrics close by and sit back and enjoy.

    • @purplekat5864
      @purplekat5864 Před 2 lety +6

YES, I concur! Best concept album ever! But there will be a lot for you guys to talk about, story-wise. Give it several listens, it gets better and better. Not everything is spelled out, but there are plenty of clues lyrically, and the music is awesome!
One of the things QR is very good at doing is writing the music to fit, and support, the lyrical content.
There's an especially cool thing they did (whether purposely or just intuitively) with the music for " THE MISSION"(same album).
I think a discussion on your show after hearing the album would be cool, with clips perhaps.
NOTE:. The ending was truncated for this video, it's actually longer and more awesome. I'd recommend the live performance for the most intense ending. However, on the album version there is a small silence at the end followed by three final words from Nikki, the main character. Really good. it brings the album and story full circle...which you'll understand when you hear the whole thing. 😜
Yes, drums should be louder!! Always! (Drums are my fav instrument).
You really picked up on something I noticed with QR. They don't do a lot of showing off. They play what the song NEEDS. They do capture pain and angst in the music, when that's called for (like in The Mission from same album). That's one of the many things I love about them. They are a cohesive unit, telling a story with music and lyrics. And not just individual players doing their thing. They are known for their twin guitar parts, which I love.
There's a killer guitar solo by Michael in "Speak" ( from same album) you might enjoy too!
I was not aware of QR at ALL until I saw their video for "Anybody Listening?" (on MTV) from their FOURTH release, Empire!! Never heard of them before that! This was 1990-ish. So, I don't think they got much mainstream airplay at all back then. Such a shame! They don't fit the mold in many ways. I love that!
I've been checking you guys daily since you did Take Hold of the Flame. SO satisfying to see you guys do this one! I love your comments about the music, lyrics, vocals, etc! Thanks so much! Looking forward to more!

I'm in my 50's n it is so cool seeing younger guys discover gems from the 80s-90s. I was a huge fan of QR in high school, Desert Storm (a friend sent me a copy of "Empire" there), and early 90s. When I was stationed in Tucson, a friend knew a dj n got us backstage passes to meet them when they were selling out 20K arenas. They were so gracious backstage. This was on "Promised Land" tour and my wife n I sat at a table on stage for one of the songs they were recreating a 60s jazz club vibe. We were so close to the band I could hear them acoustically strumming strings. Unforgettable n I have the gtr picks n autographed copy of the CD. Operation Mindcrime is an exceptional concept album n the 3 vids they released for the album will make more sense if you listen to the whole album.
Like many bands, they had personal issues. Chris DeGarmo (guitar/writer), Geoff Tate (singer) n recently Scott Rockenfield (drummer) are not part of the band. Current lineup makes cool tunes but not what they made up to "Promised Land".
****so listen to Operation Mind Crime or watch Live Crime". Its a masterpiece up there with Pink Floyd's the wall.

Queensryche did achieve some airplay in their earlier years on rock stations with the help of MTV rotations of "Queen Of The Reich" and "The Lady Wore Black" from their initial EP. Their first full length album didn't get as much airplay with the exception of "Take Hold Of The Flame". Their second garnered them a top 100 hit with "Gonna Get Close To You" which personally, I feel was one of the worst songs on it. "Walk In The Shadows" and "Chemical Youth" got some airplay. Both these disc went gold, so there was a following( me included). Then came Operation:Mindcrime and this disc blew up for them. Several songs from the album were played on rock radio and at least a few had videos on MTV. First Platinum disc for the band. They really made the mainstream with the next disc, the US 3x platinum selling Empire, on the strength of their #1 single "Silent Lucidity". After one more platinum album, main co-writer Chris DeGarmo left the band and the music suffered for it. They still had some good stuff but harder rock fans were turned off by a more mellow(overall) sound led by singer Geoff Tate's writing style. To make an even longer story short. The band did what bands do, implode. Tate was fired, law suits flew and the band eventually re-formed with a new singer and a new attitude. Back is the edgier, original QR sound. The disc put out by this version of QR is very good three albums in.

Album sales for Mindcrime really took off because MTV came into being and Queensryche got a lot of play...the lead guitarist Chris DeGarmo (wearing hat) and Geoff Tate are the main song writers and also the 2nd guitarist helped write songs
Little side fact, Chris DeGarmo eventually followed his second dream to be an airline pilot and I believe that is what he does to this day, for which airline I do not know

Their only mainstream songs are "Silent Lucidity" and "Jet City Woman". Queensryche isn't a "punch you in the face" type band but their music is a progressive Rock type vibe. They're very good at moody, dramatic songs. At least the old Queensrÿche was (this is part of their classic catalogue. "Empire" wasn't a bad album. They went a little more commercial on it but still maintained their vibe); I don't know about now. You should react to "Best I Can", the opener on "Empire." Great song.

If you want to hear more of the song, live they played an outro to the entire album that was 🔥 You can watch it on CZcams (Operation:Livecrime was the name of the official live show release). You should review the whole album and don't pass on watching the live show. That headlining arena tour in 1991(The Building Empires Tour) was one of the first to utilize film that the band played in sync with and made the Operation: Mindcrime album interactive with the audience. It was the best live performance of any band or theater presentation I've ever seen in my life.

Late 80s , MTV on 12am on Sat. Nites, to 3 am = "HEAD BANGERS BALL" it was a Metal party, each weekend they played a new vid off of MC. It was Awesome. Great LP, and alot of other bands on there like DEATH ANGEL, MEGADETH, OZZY, TESTAMENT, SLAYER, KINGS X , Scorpions, METAL CHURCH , etc,,

Empire and Silent Lucidity, off of the follow-up to Operation: Mindcrime, both got a ton of radio airplay, with Silent Lucidity winning an MTV Video Award. They had other hits as well, but as others have said, Operation: Mindcrime needs to be listened to in it's entirety....preferably while following along with the lyrics. It is a flawless masterpiece and among the greatest records ever made IMO.
